Lens review: I.Fairy Casper Green

Good evening!

I've just barely recovered from the flu and now I'm currently preparing for my last two cons of the year, one in Sweden and one in Finland. But before I get to posting any kind of cosplay plans or so I wanted to do a circle lens review! I will be showing you peeps the wonderfully multi-colored I.Fairy Casper Green lenses today!

Let's go!

Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 16.2 mm
Water content: 55%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)

Ever since I saw these lenses for the first time I've been wanting to purchase and try them on! I fell in love with the multi-color design they have – it goes from yellow in the center, to green and lastly violet. *o* It's a really unique color combination and the print itself is mighty nice too; it's quite rare to find colored contact lenses that incorporate so many different colors into its design – most times it's just difference nuances of blue etc but yeah, the I.Fairy Casper series are bold enough to mix it up even further! Of course the green is the main "middle" color (it has the biggest first impression) but the other colors complement it. I really love how the yellow ring brings the attention to the eyes and then the luscious green takes over and lastly there's that lovely purple color which crowns it all.

One lens in. Notice size difference.
As is typical for I.Fairy these lenses are big. Not humongously big but definitely big; I'm pretty positive that these would look out of place if worn without eye makeup. But despite being large in size they don't give that traditional dolly eye look since there's barely any black limbal ring to even speak of. Nevertheless it's a really pretty and colorful lens that's a treat to wear if you want to feel like a peacock for a day!

Regarding comfort these lenses are pretty okay. Felt itchy after insertion and it lasted for about 5 minutes – nothing unbearable but a bit annoying still. I had to reinsert them a couple times each because they felt stingy. These lenses also made my eyes watery after I got them in, which rarely happens to me; I had to stand there for a minute or two and pat the corners of my eyes to get them to stop tearing up. But yeah, despite the shaky start I can quite easily wear these for 3,5 hours with no problems. Sometimes I feel them slightly blurring my vision though. Around 4 hours they started to feel a bit dry and so I took them off, although if needed I could likely wear them even longer.

Lens photos ahead!
All photos taken by me during a really dull and cloudy October afternoon. All close-up photos are free from color filters and such and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.

Really yellow corridor light.
Weak yellow staircase light.
Standing in a storage room indoors, no lights on
except for some weak yellowish staircase lights behind me.

Outdoors, facing the cloudy sky.
The design of these lenses makes me think about forest dwellers like fairies and other fairytale creatures – and peacocks, of course. The colors go well together and don't clash or look weird in any way. One might expect though that the lilac would overwhelm the green, since it's the edge/final color but yeah, they do somehow blend nicely so that when you look at the lenses they do give the illusion that your eyes are first-hand green. It's quite fascinating, honestly.

Distance photo!

It's a really refreshing and different lens to wear and well suited for alternative fashion and fantasy costuming. ^.^ I'm tempted to try out other colors of this series but we'll see ~

Short summary:

Color: 9/10

Alluring and pretty multi-color lens that has yellow, green and even lilac in it! Good color pigmentation!
Design: 8/10
Really nice fairytale-esque design.
Opacity: 8/10
Covers my real eye color well but isn't too opaque to look super costumey.
Enlargement: 8/10
Definitely big in size but the lack of a thick black rim keeps them from looking overly dolly.
Comfort: 7/10
Quite good. A bit itchy after insertion but it goes away in a matter of minutes. Can wear them for a little bit past 4 hours before they start to show signs of dryness. Might blur my vision slightly.
Naturalness: 2/10
Mjah. Too many colors going on to be passable.

I hope you found this review helpful!

[Sponsored] Lens review: GEO Xtra WI-A13 Green

Hello lovely people!

I present to you today a circle lens review of a green pair – the GEO Xtra WI-A13 Green, also sometimes known as GEO Xtra Crystal Green. ^_^ The lenses I'm reviewing in this post were sponsored by the trusty LensVillage, whom I really recommend if you feel an urge to buy some colored contact lenses too! I've been their customer for years now and never had any issues – they have a wide range to choose from, many different brands and LensVillage also holds sales quite frequently, which is always a plus! ♥ Be sure to check them out ~

This review, although sponsored, consists of 100% my genuine opinion. I value honesty very highly when reviewing and won't compromise it.

Discount code "SAMURAI15"cuts 15% OFF on your purchase from LensVillage!

Base curve: 8.7 mm
Diameter: 15 mm
Water content: 38%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)

As I said above, I've never had any problems with LensVillage and I always get my lenses in a timely manner, which is in approximately two to three weeks. They've always been kind and super helpful and the lenses come securely packaged in some kind of foam, bubblewrap or such to protect the glass bottles from breaking during their journey to your home. ^^ Because I got GEO lenses I also received an information sheet together with my order, complete with desciptions on how to insert lenses and care for them etc – it's really handy for beginners! With every LensVillage order also comes a business card and a free lens case. Just be sure to pick up some lens solution beforehand because that's not included!
Oh and yeah, of course are all their circle lenses authentic and GEO lenses, like mine, come with the anti-fake stickers so that you can check them up online to prove that the pair you got is genuine and safe to wear.

This is everything that came with the order.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I put the lenses to soak overnight, before wearing them. This is highly recommended because the solution used in the vials is not the same as normal lens solution and it might hurt your eyes.
To be honest these lenses look kinda bland and boring in their vials (that was my first impression) but, when worn, they definitely look better! I was kinda expecting the color to pop a little bit more though but nevertheless it's a really pretty green shade that borders into a blueish green in some lights – kinda like a seafoam green. I'm suspecting that the color would be more like a vivid real green on dark eyes but on light blue-gray eyes like mine it does turn into a teal-ish color. ^^
One lens in. Notice the size.
I don't have so much to say about the design itself since it feels rather ordinary. It is semi-realistic yet versatile and the darker dot-like strikes makes it so that the green appears to have several different tones and not just a solid color.
The enlargement is there but it's nothing that's gonna make or break your look, meaning that the size boost is fairly average. It's good if you want lenses that aren't too big and could work for everyday looks since I'm sure these would look just fine without eye makeup, if needed. Of course they are also suitable for cosplay if you want a more natural approach yet want the color difference to be visible.
Lens photos incoming!
All photos taken by me during an October afternoon with a clear sky.
There's no color filters or such on the close-up photos and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.
Regarding comfort I had no problems inserting these lenses and they were comfy right from the start. They don't blur my vision or anything but I experienced a couple sudden bouts of dryness – luckily those were short-lived and went away almost as suddenly as they showed up. I'd say that the comfort is average because I could wear them for 2,5 hours before my eyes felt tired and dry, borderline watery. The comfort is definitely not bad but it's not amazing either, at least not for me and my sensitive/dry eyes. I'm sure most people would have no problems with these though and hey, eyedrops exist for a reason!
Overall these lenses are definitely wearable, versatile and lovely! They make my eyes look like crystals and the color is somewhere between emerald green and seafoam green, depending on the light. In some poorer lights they can turn a wee bit grayish in tone but it's no biggie because the real color is such an exquisite and unusual shade! Oh and yeah, because these lenses lack any kind of a defining black rim they won't give you dolly eyes either.
I would recommend these first-hand for cosplayers (especially for doing bishounen characters) but they would even add to most j-fashion outfits as well. I can also imagine wearing these as an everyday lens, assuming you're fine with the unnatural color that is quite eye-catching.
Distance photo!
Remember, if you order from LensVillageyou can use my discount code "SAMURAI15"to enjoy 15% OFF storewide! (incl. sclera lenses, cosmetics etc)
Short summary:
Color: 8/10
Unusual yet beautiful shade of green that balances somewhere between emerald and seafoam in color.
Design: 7/10
Appears dull on first impression but the crystal-like effect it gives when worn makes up for it!
Opacity: 7/10
Decently opaque.
Enlargement: 5/10
Not big but there's still a modest size increase.
Comfort: 6/10
Average. Comfy to wear, no vision blurs etc but dry in about 2,5 hours on my sensitive eyes.
Naturalness: 7/10
The design is quite natural and size isn't too big. Works for a daily lens, assuming you don't mind the unnatural blue-green color.
Thanks for reading! I hope you found this review helpful.^^
Thank you, LensVillage! ♡
Kitacon 2016 cosplay plans
Hello guys!
My next convention will be Kitacon in Kemi, Finland, held on 29th October in Sauvotalo. I see no reason not to go there seeing that I live close and Kitacon has always had free entrance, woop! Free local cons are always appreciated for a poor student like me, lol. I will go there with Sacchan and some other friends and, as per usual, I have little to no expectations of the con itself – Kitacon rarely has any kind of big things happening and I always spend a huge majority of my time just derping around with friends and chilling at some random corner. Not like it's a bad thing though because it's really relaxing with a small-scale con every once in a while. ^^
At first I wasn't sure if I could be bothered to cosplay, since Kitacon has always been one of those small "hang with friends" type of conventions, but after some thinking I decided to bring a costume – especially when Firith asked if I could do a pair cosplay with him. Firith was considering to bring Ayame Sohma from Furuba and asked if I could join in so that he wouldn't have to be lonely Ayame again; he even said that going solo in said cosplay had started to taste like wood. I can wholly understand, solo cosplaying is rarely as fun as group cosplaying when you get the chance. So of course, as the good friend I am, I decided to spare my pal from another wooden experience.
Cosplay plans in 3.... 2.... 1...
Series: Fruits Basket
Character: Hatori Sohma
So I decided on going with Hatori, mainly because he fits with Ayame, is easy to wear and I was originally supposed to debut him earlier this year anyway but then shit happened and yeah, it's been bugging me since then. ^^" I needed a costume that I can easily change out of because –as how things seem right now after the con I'll be heading for a Halloween party so yeah, nothing too complicated that takes hours to take off. Hatori is a lovely character anyway, one of my favorites from Fruits Basket. I'm glad I get a second chance to debut him together with Firith as Ayame ~
That's all for this quickie. Hatori makeup test coming soon so stay on the line!
Bye bye!
Fruits Basket Hatori Sohma makeup test!
Good evening folks!
Some days ago I felt like it was high time to grab myself by the collar and do a makeup try-out for Hatori Sohma from Furuba, whom I will be debuting at Kitacon shortly. This costume was originally supposed to be worn at Cosvision earlier this year but yeah, shit happened. :/ I did a costume test a while ago too but I never actually tried out the makeup and, well, nowadays I don't feel too comfortable just improvising something on the con morning. Too high risk of fucking it up.
I noticed when I took out the wig that, since I originally styled it before Cosvision, some of the hairs had gotten crooked while being packed away and well, now their default positions are really wonky and ugly. I'll need to run it down with a straightener and, possibly, wash and restyle it before the con because yeah, it looks like crap right now. Hatori would never let his hair be unkempt, lol.
Some Hatori selfies ahead (aka no photographer) ~
 Oh and yeah, the lenses I'm using are the Flora Diva Violet, great for bishounen characters!
I'm not 100% satisfied (can someone teach me how to makeup? ;_; it's so harrrrrd) and I don't think this will be the final look that I'll don for the con; I'm fairly likely to at least try changing it up but this should give you guys a general idea.
I'm still trying to figure out how to make the whole "anime eye" look work on my eyes because it feels like no matter what I do my (deep) eyelid crease gets in the way and fucks it all up. It's extremely frustrating and especially when none of my current liquid liners dry fast enough and yeah, then I accidentally open my eyes too early or something and, BAM, all my hard work is smeared all over my eyelids. >_> Also, lower lashes are a bitch when you're trying to use liquid eyeliner under your eye. People always told me I have beautiful long lashes but they're honestly a pain in the ass and constantly in the way, lol. Anybody wanna trade? orz
Psst, I'm going with the manga version –on which he has violet eyes– instead of the anime. I highly preferred the manga anyway and it was the one I first checked out – I honestly think the anime is crap (sorry!) but the manga is really good. Another good thing is that Firith will join me as Ayame Sohma, which should be a lot of fun as well as help with character recognization because, err, Hatori sadly looks like a really generic anime guy in a suit. Too bad I don't have any seahorse or dragon plush to carry with me, that could help as well...
That's about all I have to say for this quick costest. See you at Kitacon!
Kitacon 2016 – Morning poop almost got me
Hello puppies ~
Ah, Kitacon. That one comfy but small local convention that I've been attending for years. This year it was held on 29th October in a building called Sauvotalo in Kemi, Finland. As per usual I went there with my friends; a con with free entrance that is not far away is always a good way to brighten up an otherwise ordinary weekend.
Kitacon 2016 poster.
But before I get to the actual con summary I want to tell you a bit about the pre-con Friday!
Sacchan was sleeping over at my place and on the day before the con we were at a small Halloween party that Frozen Angel held at his apartment. Fun part is that during said small party I got really tired early but, of course, once I got home, took a shower and prepared to go sleep I... yeah, guess what? My tiredness just disappeared into some deep dark void and suddenly I couldn't fall asleep before I had tried 400 different sleeping positions and done a sacrifice to Satan. I don't remember exact times but I'm pretty dang sure I got less than 5 hours of sleep that night and, once our alarm clocks rung on the morning, I was so fucking tired I kept pressing the snooze button long after I should have gotten up. ._. I swear it was impossible – for a moment I even considered just staying home because of tiredness but, most of all, because my stomach was rampaging and shit was flying, literally. Yay, poop stories. In other words I was feeling really nauseous when I woke up; I had bad pains in my lower stomach and needed to run to the bathroom at least three times within 15 minutes – it was horrible. I constantly had the whole "I might puke" sort of feeling going on too. The con morning curse.
Once I actually managed to drag my ass out of bed it dawned on me that I had less than 1,5 hours to get ready (aka put on cosplay) before we had to sit in the car and be on our way to Kemi, at the latest. I realized that no way in hell would I have enough time and so I just became a filthy casual and jumped into the car. I also was too afraid to put on my cosplay only to realize that my nausea might get worse at the con and then I'd spend a too big chunk of my time frequenting bathrooms... No thanks.
But yeah, we got to the con a bit past 11:00 local time, safe and sound. I was being really wary and observative of what my body was doing and, because of this, I felt too unsafe to go attend the one and only panel that interested me. Oh well, it would have been too awkward to just suddenly leave because of a sudden need to run for the toilet...
Our company chilled around for a while, checked what the con had to offer and so on. Some sellers I recognized from earlier years but I think there was some new stuff for sale too. I didn't buy anything but a few items caught my interest, especially those kind of surprise bags. I mean, there were Pokémon themed ones! I also saw that someone was selling an used copy of Mario Party 6 for 44 € and I was really tempted because it's one of the Gamecube games that I'm still missing in my collection...
At times it was quite crammed, especially in the Dealer's Hall, but it was manageable.
Random main hall (incl. Dealer's Hall) photo.
After about an hour or so, maybe less, Sacchan told me that she'd go pick up her little brother because he also wanted to attend the con. I decided to come with her for company; she didn't live so far away anyway so I wouldn't be gone from the con for too long. Besides, I realized that my berserk stomach had calmed down a bit and I thought that it would be easier to change into my Hatori cosplay at Sacchan's home than at a small bathroom in the con, which were almost always occupied anyway. I wasn't patient enough to play the toilet waiting game.
Once we arrived at Sacchan's home I threw my cosplay bag into the caravan on the yard and went to say hello to their 13-year-old dachshund mix Piki. ;A; He's such a cute black sausage dog, I just can't.   Sacchan put on the heat in the caravan because it was cold as fuck in that shit. I froze my butt off doing my makeup in there but I'm a true Finn and endured it like a man, lol. I was literally doing my makeup in my underwear and a leather jacket.
Oh and yeah, of course when I cosplay a character who only has one eye visible you can be sure that I'm gonna mess up the eye makeup and yeah, guess which one eye got covered by the wig? :-DD The one with the more succesful makeup of course – the other, visible eye, looked like a case of "end my miseryyyyy".
I didn't check the time when we got back to the con but our fetch-Joni-and-put-on-my-cosplay trip maybe took an hour or so. I remember Firith calling me and asking where we were; I of course told him that I had started to feel better and were putting on my Hatori cosplay so that we could have a quick photoshoot together later on.
At the con we quickly reunited with the group and just chilled around for a while.
Dealer's Hall items. Surprise bags always tempt me...
Pokémon merchandise.
We all wanted to go check the Artist's Alley upstairs since that has turned into one of my "must visit" priorities at cons lately. I don't know but I've kinda started to take a bigger interest in Artist's Alley merch and now I find myself buying more from there than from the actual merch sellers, if that makes sense. I just love seeing all the items that every person creates (it's always a surprise what's up for sale at each con!) by hand and, as an artist myself, it makes me happy to support the work of artists that I like by buying their products. Fan-made merch have a different feeling to them since each piece is unique, you know.
One half of the Artist's Alley.
I remember when I was at Artist's Alley in my Hatori cosplay a random person came up to me, excitedly, and asked if I was cosplaying Sebastian. I assumed they meant the one from Kuroshitsuji and I answered that I was Hatori. They just left without a word and I felt really awkward...
I can sorta understand the mixup though because both wear a suit and have black hair but yeah, neither their suits nor their hair style is the same so... *shrugs* It's not the first time someone mistakes my cosplay for Sebastian Michaelis – the same thing happened several years ago too when I cosplayed Toshizo Hijikata's Sweet School Life version (also wearing a black suit) from Hakuouki but, then again, this one makes a lot more sense because they're basically hair twins, almost. Fun fact is that both times I got mistaken for Sebastian I cosplayed different characters but had the same wig, except that my current Hatori wig is actually my former Hijikata wig that I cut shorter and styled.
Those dolphin plushies were so cute. I always had a thing
for marine animals ~
At Artist's Alley I found one of my favorite sellers in the north – it's the lovely tammukkasart's and hirnuperna's table! It's funny because I've been pretty much a regular at their table, almost always buying something at each con. I hope I don't sound like a stalker now, lol. I just love that they create merch from several different fandoms (as well as animals etc) and they are super fun and nice to talk to! I actually spent some time just babbling away and it was fun when they remembered me from previous cons, omg! It always feels so surreal somehow, ahaha. ;u; If I'm completely honest their table is one of the ones that I'm always hoping to find when I go to all these smaller local cons – it's the same people I bought my dragon form Haku (Spirited Away) and Magikarp scarves from and yeah, every time I wonder if there's any new ones up! Can't wait for the Gyarados one I heard was in the making.
tammukkasart's and hirnuperna's table.
The Touken Ranbu items are soooo cute!
Actually I got one of those Yamato no Kami Yasusada (Tourabu) keychains as a freebie and I was about to drop my jaw on the floor! ;O; I almost didn't believe it and I had to ask again to be sure if I had heard wrong. I can't really even start to describe that mix of sudden surprise and happiness – they're so kind that I just... just... asghfdsjghfds. ♥ Do check them out (the names link to their tumblr accounts) and shower them with love! >//<
I'm sorry by the way that the photo above is a bit grainy, it was taken not long before the con closed and the sun had already started to set, hence poor light conditions because yeah, this is northern Finland in the beginning of winter. Kaamos is approaching.
Of course there was the ogligatory sweets shop selling pocky, ramune etc.
Kitacon in itself doesn't have a huge lot of entertainment value but that's all the more reason for why I always go there with friends. It's one of those slow-paced comfy cons you go to and chill with your pals at. I didn't really care for watching the cosplay date nor the cosplay competition so most of my time I actually just spent walking around and then having a quick photoshoot outside with Firith as Ayame Sohma and me as Hatori. Those photos will be posted in a separate post so stay tuned for that, if you're interested.
This was one of the most interesting things up for sale for
a long-time Pokémon fan like me. The amount of nostalgy.
I'm actually surprised that seemingly no one recognized my cosplay. Or well, if someone did then they didn't tell me about it. Fruits Basket is a rather well-known series but, then again, Hatori looks extremely generic (black-haired guy in a suit) and not very interesting in a costume sort of way so yeah, I can understand very well. Oh well, not like I mind at all because I wanted a cosplay I could move around in freely and without any discomfort or annoying swords to carry, lol. Sometimes it's such a freedom to not constantly have to worry about bumping any props I might have into walls etc or potentially ruining my costume by sitting on the floor. Hatori was a good choice for this kind of slow-paced con because of its ease of wear. I sometimes feel like donning a more impressive cosplay is a bit of a waste at small cons anyway, because of the additional worries that comes with it.
Obligatory cosplay selfie. Bathroom edition.
It was nice to meet some friends I hadn't seen in a while as well, like Ronja. We didn't end up talking all that much but it was really nice to see her again and have a quick chat. I'm sorry though if I seemed a bit distant or something because yeah, at some point I was really freaking hungry and it was the only thing I could think of. xD
Oh yeah, some hours into the con everyone in my company were indeed hungry so we decided on where to go eat; most wanted to go to Subway but there were some votes for Hesburger too. I belonged to the Subway group together with Sacchan and her lil' bro Joni and because we're lazy fucks we took the car there. Real reason is that it was cold, mind you. We all took the cheapest (daily) option and I decided to try it with two sauces instead of just one – it was good to mix barbeque and ranch dressing, hehe.
The con's cafeteria sold some cute bakeries.
Sometime after eating I went into that one crafting room at the con. I don't know what its proper name would be in English but you know, that kind of room where you can draw and do creative stuff – it's really common in most cons I've been to. I ended up doing one of those doodle puzzle piece thingies to kill some time, it was fun. Sacchan drew her signature Buttman and then she drew... Hijikakka. Don't ask. xD
Yes, it's a Hijikata poop pun.
Made by Sacchan.
I also paid a visit to the gaming room a couple times. As soon as I entered I felt hyper nostalgic because there were only 8-bit and 16-bit games in there! I saw someone playing my childhood drug Super Mario World on Super Nintendo and all the memories just came flooding back! All the games were even played on those old fat televisions – all the better because it gave the right feeling.
The first time around I tried playing some Megaman 2 but that... didn't go so well. Damn those frogs and those falling chocolate bridges!
Megaman 2 gaming. Yes, that's the chocolate bridges I meant.
I'm not sure if Kitacon always had a video game room or not but, if they did, then I feel really fucking dumb right now. :)) I just can't help but wonder because if the gaming room was in earlier Kitacons too then I could have spent a lot more of my time in there enjoying myself while playing classics instead of being bored because hey, I love old-school games and playing them make me a happy geek. I don't own a SNES currently big sister wanted it back ffuu ffuu so any chance to play childhood games at a con is already a pretty sure way to tempt me to go there.
The last 30 minutes or something I spent at the gaming room as well. This time the Super Mario World was free and so I of course picked up the controller and played. It was fun to notice that even after years and years of not playing the game I still remembered secrets and where enemies appear etc. :D Of course I was far from as good as I used to be at the game but still definitely not bad. I really should buy myself a SNES one day, I need this shit in my life.
My loots. Everything's from Artist's Alley!
Articuno acrylic phone strap, Yasusada keychain and a magnet.
We stayed at Kitacon until it closed and even after it closed we had to stay there and wait because we got some problems with the car *coughnogasolinecough* and didn't want to wait outside in the cold. We got home safe and sound and, all in all, I really enjoyed this year's Kitacon surprisingly much. The video game room definitely did a lot in terms of giving me something to do. ^^ Sure that the con has free entrance and probably not a big budget or anything but considering how small it is it's a good one, I'd definitely keep on attending Kitacon.
I'm probably forgetting to tell a lot of stuff but I feel like this post is already getting a bit long so yeah, thanks for reading and yada yada.
Fruits Basket Hatori & Ayame photoshoot
Hello people!
Some of you who read my Kitacon summary might remember that I mentioned that I had a quick cosplay photoshoot during the con. I debuted my Hatori Sohma costume and my friend Firith did Ayame Sohma to accompany me. ^^ It was quite chilly outside but we managed to get at least a few usable photos, even though a big chunk was unusable because of wrong focus or just not sharp enough. The photographer was my brother and he's sadly not very camera savvy, but we did the best of the situation and got a few good shots.
Cosplayers:Shiro Samurai (Hatori Sohma) & Firith (Ayame Sohma)
Photographer:Frozen Angel
Photo editor:Shiro Samurai
I just want to note that even though I used a real cigarette as a prop (Hatori is a smoker) on one of the photos I'm not a smoker myself. Firith let me borrow a cigarette but it wasn't lit.
I don't have anything else to say. Thanks for viewing!
Skecon 2016 plans!
Hi guys!
Kitacon is barely behind me and soon my next convention is already knocking at the door – never thought the end of the year would be so con-crammed! But yeah, here I am and this coming weekend I'll be heading towards Skecon in Skellefteå, Sweden. It's a small 3-day con that I've been attending since the start!
What's a bit different though is that this year I'll actually be working there and not just go as a regular visitor. I've been wanting to try working at Skecon for a couple years now and I felt like it was time to take that step and get some more con working experience (I've previously only worked twice at Nerdcon) under my belt! I'm a bit nervous but at the same time I'm excited, especially now that Skecon is in a different building (Campus instead of Folkparken) than on previous years. I can't wait to see what it'll be like!
So yeah, seeing how con workers are not allowed to cosplay during working hours I won't be able to cosplay conveniently on either Friday nor Sunday because of how my –presumably finalized– working hours are placed. Sunday is a short day anyway so I wouldn't have bothered with cosplaying even if I could. I happened to be lucky with Saturday though since it seems like my only working shift on that day is a night shift from 22:00 to 01:00 local time, which means that I'm free for a majority of the day, wiee! o/
Oh and yeah, a quick mention! When the preliminary working shedule was first shown to us workers I noticed that, for some reason, I and Sacchan had 5 shifts each while everyone else in the same team only had 3 shifts?? What the heck. Of course I naturally felt like it was unfair (on average it meant that we had to work 4 hours more) and brought it up and, luckily, it got changed immediately to be more evened out between all the workers. Normally I don't want to "be a bother" to the con organizers etc but sometimes I feel like I have to point out stuff if I feel like it's not right/fair. Of course no harm meant to Skecon – just wanted to mention it and yeah, mistakes happen. :) Maybe, just maybe, it wouldn't have been noticed had I not brought it up and thus it's important to speak your mind during the planning stages.
But yeah, regarding the whole cosplay thing – I thought that I'd bring one cosplay for Saturday and, after going through my options, I felt pretty sure that I wanted to take a sword boy with me!
Character: Kashuu Kiyomitsu
Series: Touken Ranbu
I decided on Kashuu's uchiban/casual outfit because I really need photos of this costume and I have a pair of nice red lenses that I really need to open or else they'll expire on January; I'd be sad if I got no use for them since it's a pair that is really good for cosplay. I'm hoping there would be other Touken Ranbu cosplayers at the con!
On all the other days I'll just be in more or less casual clothes, wearing the obligatory "funktionär" t-shirt (con worker t-shirt) during my working hours. I'll be stationed at the entrance together with Sacchan so be sure to say hi if you're at the con ~ ^o^
My (preliminary) working shifts are as follows:
Friday: 15:00-18:00, 21:00-24:00
Saturday: 22:00-01:00
Sunday: 10:00-12:00
That's about all I had to say! See you at my last con of the year!
Skecon 2016 – New location and a car disaster
Hello people of the world!
I'm back home from Skecon (4-6 November in Skellefteå, Sweden) and I must say that it was one hell of a journey! I went there with Sacchan, Firith and my friend Marcus and this time all but Firith went there as con workers. Contrary to previous Skecons this year's edition was held in Campus and not in the usual Folkparken. Campus is an university area consisting of several school buildings and, while it's different from Folkparken, it's actually not bad at all.
But now, summary time!
Skecon poster.
The night before the con Sacchan and Firith slept over at my place. It was hella crammed but we made it work, lol. I did some day-before-the-con packing and Sacchan helped me save my Kashuu wig which had taken some damage from being stored. The night we spent talking a lot of shit and cocooning us with the help of a lot of blankets. As per usual we went to sleep way too late and because of that I don't think any of us got more than maybe 2 hours of sleep, if lucky – I know I slept 30 minutes and it felt horrible on the morning. Really horrible.
Friday morning came. I don't know how but somehow we all managed to worm us out of our beds and make ourselves look like humans for the trip ahead. Or at least we tried. When we were done we took our mountains of luggage and planted us into Sacchan's car. I remember thinking when leaving that I won't need my winter jacket, gloves or hats because it can't be colder in Skellefteå than up here – oh boy how I came to regret this later.
Before going to pick up Marcus from centrum we went to a shopping center to pick up a package and to buy some ES (aka energy drink). I texted Marcus when we were done with our business and it turns out that he had forgotten and hadn't prepared squat! Oh shit. D: I helped him speed-pack the necessities and then we left southwards.
We realized at some point that we'd never make it in time for the ideal "all workers should be at the con before 12:00" because the driving conditions were shit. For some reason all snow had fallen southwards from Kalix and it was really fucking weird to realize that even Luleå had a lot more snow than Haparanda did, for example. Basically looked like real winter and it felt unreal, considering the time of year and considering how late the snow has been in "southern Norrbotten" since the last 10-20 years. But yeah, even motherfucking Skellefteå had a major case of snow going on and all four of us were flabbergasted once we arrived. It was really something to realize that during the very first Skecon in 2012, which was held during the same time of year, there was no snow to be spoken of and now there was enough to look like we had time-traveled to January or February. I don't even.
Skecon entrance after opening. (main building)
We parked our car at a parking lot in the surrounding area – the cheapest one we could find. We had to walk a bit to get to the con but it wasn't for longer than maybe 5-10 minutes. But yeah, because the Campus area consists of several separate school buildings it took us a while to find the right one, especially because the con hadn't yet officially opened (we had to arrive earlier because of being workers) and thus there were no signs in which building it was. After running and slipping around for a while we managed to find one with Skecon people inside (spot them by the "funktionär" shirts!) and entered it. There we were met by some other workers who were preparing the entrance etc. We helped out by carrying merchandise inside etc and then we just waited until some other workers showed up and then we were led upstairs so that we could get our worker badges and t-shirts. Yes, we workers got free t-shirts and it was pretty awesome.
Casual me with my Skecon worker shirt.
I look tired because I was tired.
Before the con I was told that workers shouldn't cosplay so that it's easier to see who is part of the staff and who's a regular attendant. All workers got these white Skecon shirts to wear and I got one with the text "funktionär"– I honestly don't know what it translates to but it's basically just that I'm part of the staff. Some people had shirts with texts like "team leader" so that it would be easier to figure out who has what position.
As soon as the clock struck 15:00 local time the con officially opened its doors to the workers. We had time to get the entrance reception ready and then it was time for our first working shifts. It's worth noting that all three of us were entrance workers, meaning that we took care of con tickets and also had to watch over the entrance so that no one without con bands entered the building etc.
My first shift was from 15:00 to 18:00 and it was by far the busiest pass I had during the whole weekend because yeah, opening rush. My other work shifts were night shifts and the last two hours of Sunday.
Our table during the opening, feat Marcus and Sacchan.
During the opening we were in charge of the ticket buying table, meaning that anyone who hadn't pre-ordered tickets (there was a separate table for that) could buy them for the regular price at our table – we sold one-day tickets and weekend tickets along with tickets for the sleeping accommodation and food tickets to the cafeteria. Payment options were restricted to either cash or Swish and it posed some problems because we had no way to accept credit card payments; that's something that would be good to add to future Skecons.
When the first customer rush had died down a bit we moved our table and later on the pre-order and the purchase table were united to just be one table. But yeah, because I was working the 3 first hours of the convention I had no time to actually go check the con out and as soon as our shift had ended we all were Godzilla-level hungry and headed straight to the nearest hamburger restaurant –aka Max– before anything else.
When we were walking in Skellefteå after sunset it dawned on us that it's hella cold and that there's enough snow to build a snowman. :DD I started worrying if the sleeping accommodation would be cold as fuck during the night but I tried not to worry about it too much and hey, that's the reason I took with me no less than 3 big wool blankets, two mattresses and my sleeping bag. But yeah, Max wasn't far away and the walk there probably didn't take us longer than 5 minutes. We ate some warm burgers (discount coupons are awesome) and then we headed back to the con. We made sure not to take too long because me and Sacchan had a second working shift during the Friday and it was from 21:00 to 00:00.
Honestly, the whole Friday I barely had time to check out what the con had to offer because I was either stuck to my working position or I was eating hamburgers. I did do a quick run around before my second pass but didn't have time to actually do any closer checks on anything. During my short amount of free time I helped Firith change into his casual Japan (Hetalia) cosplay that I let him borrow and I also took some photos of him later. I don't remember what else I did during that time but I do remember that once our second shift was done me, Sacchan and Firith were rather tired and just wanted to go sleep – the lack of sleep during the previous night took its toll. I remember asking the info workers for directions of where the sleeping accommodation was and received some vague description about an E-shaped building closeby. I wasn't told where exactly this was and so the three of us jumped into the car and tried to manage with what little information we had.
After circling around the Campus area for a while and being confused by the few "sovsal" (sleeping accommodation) direction signs we could find we randomly ran into Marcus outside. He had seemingly been looking for us and had some business with our car, aka he needed some of his sleeping stuff from the trunk. The thing is that Marcus had one of those 04:00 to 07:00 night/morning shifts and had decided that he'd try sleeping at the con, before his shift, instead of going to the actual sleeping accommodation. Nevertheless he and his long legs (he's a really fast walker/runner) decided to help us in our frustrating mission to find the damn sleeping place – the whole thing turned into a game of "Follow Marcus" while three of us sat in the car and slowly drove after him while he ran around and tried every door of every even remotely E-shaped building in the vicinity. xD Much to our disappointment all the doors were locked and then I got fed up with this guessing game and we drove back to the con building and asked for clearer directions. Turns out the building isn't even in the Campus grounds – Y U NO TELL ME THIS EARLIER?? (屮゚Д゚)屮
Oh well, some other guy with a car was heading there and he was kind enough to wait for us and so we followed him to the sleeping accommodation. Hori shitto, finally.
A map showing the way from Skecon to the sleeping accommodation.
Guess if this was available when we needed it? :-DD
Once we got there we emptied our whole car in one go and can I say one thing? SO MUCH STUFF. D: Like really, no one had a single finger available when we plowed through the snowy shortcut to get to the backdoor of the building. My fingers were literally cramping because of the stuff I had to carry and because of the biting cold. Once inside the building we were shown around and told that con workers had a different classroom to sleep in than the rest. Seemingly there was one room for workers and like 4 rooms for usual congoers. After some explanations of our situation (a friend group of Finns and some with risks of panic attacks, pains etc) they agreed on letting me and Sacchan sleep in the same classroom as Firith, who wasn't working. We thought it better this way and were really delighted to see that the sleeping accommodation workers cared enough to do an exception for us.
I'm not sure why but for some reason we got to sleep the first night in an completely empty classroom and that was awesome. Later on in the night my friend Vicktor showed up in the same room, omg. I remember being able to sleep surprisingly damn well on the floor (what the heck? I never sleep well in these) and actually wasn't cold at all during the night! I was also happy that I had no early shifts on the Saturday and thus I could sleep longer.
Just showing off the con band.
Saturday morning. I had put some alarms but couldn't be bothered to wake up to any of them. #noregrets
Everyone was sleeping (except Marcus who wasn't there) until some worker came in and woke us up by saying that we have to get up because they will close the sleeping accommodation after 30 minutes. Turns out it's won't open again until ten in the night and if we needed something during the day we'd have to bring it with us. So yeah, nothing to do but change out of my pyjama, prepare to leave and wake up Vicktor who was still sleeping, unaware of anything thanks to earbuds and a sleeping mask. Vicktor was working at the con too, by the way. Not in the entrance though but in the RTF, aka Random Task Force.
Just before leaving we're told by another sleeping accommodation worker that there had been some error and they will have to move our stuff to another classroom. It was fine with us three as long as our request to still be in the same room and next to each other was still valid, which it was.
We exited the building, jumped into the car (Vicktor included) and asked each other who remembered the way back– no one did. Fuck. :'D So yeah, what was to follow was another one of those "we have no idea where we're going" trips around Skellefteå. We ended up with a dead end (thanks Vicktor xD) and drove around until we got lucky and somehow found our way out – although in a completely different place than yesterday. Oh well, despite the detour we found our way back to Campus!
This year Skecon even had a new banner. :'D
Once at the con I think I went to check around the building, now that I had almost the whole day to explore. Now that the sun was out the building was really lit, thanks to the huge amount of big windows and glass corridors. It's a really comfy building and fairly roomy. There'a a lot of bathrooms (incl. handicap WCs) and that's always a good thing. I actually liked the location surprisingly much, even though it might just be a "this year only" type of solution considering what might have happened behind the curtains. What I mean by this is that much earlier this year Skecon asked on Facebook on what time of the year the people want the con to be held and it turned out that a majority was fine with the time they always had the con on previously, aka early July. Thing is that at this time I think there might not even have been more than one month until July and if Skecon was to be held then they'd have to get it together in less than half a year. It could be that Folkparken was booked or something and they had to find another location and hence the location change. Then again, this is just my speculation and might not hold true – just wanted to mention it. This might also at least partially explain why the information was not running properly and it felt a bit unorganized at times.
Main hall/entrance area.
Cloakroom. Anyone could store their belongings here.
It wasn't guarded but I didn't have anything stolen.
The building's cafeteria. Too bad the opening times were really limited
and it hurt the con.
Cafeteria area. The stairs lead to the gaming room.
Skecon was held in, as far as I know, two different buildings. Forum was the main building and Campushallen was where the cosplay competitions etc were held because of the stage. The martial arts display was also in Campushallen. I honestly never went to the stage half of Campushallen so I can't say what it was like. ^^"
Convention schedule.
During my free time I think I first went to check out the Dealer's Hall. I didn't really find anything of interest this time. I was wary of buying anything because I noticed that the Pokémon plush dolls appeared to be fake goods (just like on previous years) and I don't want to support that. Artist's Alley didn't have anything that caught my fancy either, save for some cute cat stickers and those potted plant thingies – I've been wanting to buy one of them but I currently don't have anywhere to put/store it and seeing how crammed I live I don't want to take the risk of it accidentally breaking. Once I get a bigger apartment I'll get myself one because I love the idea!
View of the Dealer's Hall.
Pokémon Go themed caps.
Dragon and fairytale statues. That was something new!
One of the Artist's Alley tables.
They were selling cute cat stickers!
The snack shop was selling these interesting
DragonBall candies.
Once the clock struck 13:00 I headed for Campushallen. It was time for the Budokan martial arts display that I definitely didn't want to miss! I went there with Sacchan and Firith and watched the kendo fights. Something inside me woke up and I realized how damn much I miss kendo. Anyone who was trained kendo knows the "kendo smell" and it felt quite funny to realize that I missed that smelly odor too. xD
Budokan posters in Campushallen's basement floor.
One of the senseis talked generally about kendo and showed everyone the equipment that they use while training. Of course it all was familiar to me already and I just stood there and inhaled the infamous kendo stink meanwhile.
After that we got to watch the club members during their normal practice. They actually had a full training session during the con.
Kendo teacher telling interested congoers about kendo.
The kendo practicioners did some ji-geiko (free sparring), if I'm right. I couldn't help but notice that the pair closest to the entrance had one of the kendoka's using two swords, one long and one short – never saw that in action before!
Once we had watched for a few minutes we moved over to another room and there anyone who wanted could pick up a shinai (bamboo practice sword) and the sensei went through some basic information. Of course he was a really funny and charismatic man and threw in some extra bits of info and funny visualizations. I really enjoyed watching him and it did freshen up my rusty memory.
I picked up a shinai and we were to practice standing in kamae (at least the sword part of it, lol) and then hit the other one's sword away to break their guard and get an opening. Not too sure why this was the focus because it seemed like no one except me had ever done kendo before and thus had no idea how to even hold the sword properly, even less do a proper strike. I actually ended up acting as a secondary sensei so that there would be two "opponents" for the newbies to practice with. It was fun to tutor two guys who seemed genuinely interested!
Once the try-on part was done I found the sensei in the hall talking about samurai history. Turns out that one of the armors on display was from his personal collection! But yeah, he told us about the armor and then some funny stories about how Japanese warfare was different in like 1100s if compared to 1500s. I actually learned a lot of new information and in a very entertaining way. I had no idea about the samurai armor "nipple rings". xD He also talked about the use of sashimono and how the early samurai cared more about doing something cool on the battlefield or to challenge a famous fighter than if they died or not. He also said that the katana sword wasn't always as important as it now is. Needless to say there was a lot of information in a neat and entertaining package, complete with hilarious faces and gestures. I love this guy, 10/10.
Display early samurai armor replica.
I ended up staying there for like 2 hours listening to his stories about his Japan experiences with the kendo and other budo clubs – I swear I haven't laughed so hard in years! His stories ranged from offering some Japanese men to taste snus (a chewable tobacco we have in Sweden) after telling them that in Sweden smoking is something that women do and yeah, of course the Japanese guys felt like they needed to prove their manliness or something (you know, if a gaijin does it it's cool) and the reactions that ensued, perfectly replicated by this kendo sensei's amazing skill to manipulate his face, were nothing short of hilarious – he even said that the original story ended up with both parties (Swedes and the Japanese) laughing hard at each other. xD
He told a lot more stories too, like Japanese children (young kendokas) tasting Swedish candies after practice and immediately spitting them out in front of the giver, only to have their mom hit them and the kid then being all "it's good, it's good" out of politeness even though their face says a different tale – of course this also led into mutual laughter afterwards.
But the best story was the one about some Swedish guy with Cerebral Palsy. He is of the kind that has problems walking normally and his face is always "hanging" etc – it's really obvious that he's handicapped, in other words. The thing with this guy though is that he's really good at judo or karate, I can't remember which one. He applied to some kind of high-end Japanese university for budo sports and got accepted. Once he arrived you can imagine the chock when the Japanese realized that this is not an ordinary guy but a freako. In Japan, sensei told, it seems like handicapped people are an embarrassment to the society and thus you rarely see anyone in a wheelchair in public etc – I don't know how true this is but I assume he knows what he's talking about. So yeah, now that this obviously handicapped guy had already come this far the Japanese seemingly just wanted to send him back home as soon as possible and thus sent the best, scariest, beast of a guy to fight him on his next (first?) practice. Turns out this handicapped Swedish guy beat the living shit out of this monster the Japanese sent just to get rid off him. Guess if they got an eye-opener? :DD The respect that ensued was amazing and even nowadays when this guy holds lectures in Sweden about his handicap and martial arts some high-ranking Japanese budo masters will fly all the way just to listen to him. It's an amazing true story about how people can change their view on others.
One thing though is that because I stayed so long at the martial arts place I completely missed the Saturday's cosplay competition. Normally I wouldn't have cared but the thing is that Firith took part in it with his Ayame Sohma (Fruits Basket) cosplay and I would have liked to see it. Oh well, no can do.
I waited for Sacchan and Firith to come back from the competition (I was done with the budo a bit before the competition ended) and once they showed up I called Marcus and Vicktor to ask if they wanted to go eat. Both showed up and we took the car to....................... Max. Again. #maxläski
Car filled with friends. #takapenkinfiilikset
Marcus, Vicktor and Firith derping in the back seat.
This time we went to eat a bit earlier because I figured that it's better I eat first and then change into cosplay, just to be safe because I'd kill myself if I got dressing on my vintage kimono or hakama.
Once we were done we headed back to the con and I went to change into cosplay. I had opened some new red circle lenses for Kashuu and I hadn't tried them on before the con and yeah, now that I was putting on my cosplay I worried that what if they are defective and I can't wear them etc. Luckily they were fine, except that they dried really quickly but, then again, that could be because of the expiry date being January, had I not opened them.
Only photo proof that I wore Kashuu.
I have a love-hate relationship with this wig. It's pretty and all but it's actually so goshdarn thick that I can't even pin it because there's so much fibers everywhere that it literally pushes the pins out! Fun fact too is that this is just a random cheap eBay wig. I can't even. I don't think I ever had a wig that was too thick.
I found Illuminati!
(on a random guy's overall)
The remainder of my free time, before my night shift would start, I spent in the video game room. I watched the Super Smash Bros. Wii U tournament for a while and then I went to play some Ultimate Marvel VS. Capcom 3 once I saw that a console was free. Too bad it was an Xbox but oh well. xD Me and Sacchan played versus against each other and had some fun with it. Neither of us had ever touched the game before but it was a blast to just hammer the buttons and wriggle the stick and hope for the best, lol.
Gaming room. Consoles ranged from Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64
to the newer generations.
TCG table for both Magic: The Gathering as well as Pokémon.
Crafting corner. Mainly drawing.
A small chill corner. I regret a bit that I didn't take a photo of
it during night time because there were some nice lights etc.
Mine and Sacchan's shift started at 22:00 and we were a bit late because we forgot the clock while we were playing some Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate with Marcus and some random congoer. Luckily Skecon peeps are super chill and no ragestorms happened. Our shift lasted until 01:00 and this time we weren't even tired once our shift was over. We actually just went back upstairs to the video game room, fetched some Mountain Dew and started playing on whatever was available. I almost jumped out of my pants when I saw that the super nostalgic Super Nintendo was free and Super Mario World was in. I played non-stop from the very beginning until I got stuck in that one side-scrolling fortress in the forest. I died too many times on it and had some hidden gamer rage that one time when I got to the boss, killed all four of them and then fell into the lava and died because the timer hadn't stopped and the ground underneath me vanished. >_>
Skecon also held a Pokémon tournament.
There were a lot of signs showing what was happening and when.
The overall atmosphere of the con was really relaxed and friendly. A lot of randomness happened too, like the workers at the info suddenly started to sing the HEYYEYAAEYAAAEYAEYAA He-man parody song – yes, there were guys singing the high notes too and it was hilarious. Also, Marcus had a kazoo with him and he would play songs on it but well, once he did a sound that sounded like a moose's mating call and it stuck with us and stayed as a running joke throughout the whole convention. x)
During the night time me, Sacchan and Firith wanted to draw something on the paper that had been taped on the wall next to the stairs leading upstairs. It was one of those that some cons have on which attendants can draw whatever they want. At first I just drew a few smaller things but then stuff escalated and I drew memes, tentacles and even Dugtrio.
My beautiful tentacle. This is for you, Sacchan.
I had to do a Giggi because Giggi is love, Giggi is life.
Later on Sacchan came back to draw the Deviljho and the Memehunter. xD
We went to sleep really late, I think the clock might have been like 5 in the morning or something. Oops. Oh well, this time I slept really poorly because either my lower back hurt (because of the floor) or something else hurt. I don't think I managed to sleep much more than maybe 1 hour before we had to wake up because the sleeping accommodation was closing. Me and Sacchan also had the last Sunday shift, from 10:00 to 12:00, aka the con's final hours.
The thing is that on Sunday morning disaster happened. As soon as we got to the car (meaning me, Sacchan and Firith) and were about to start driving it became obvious that we wouldn't be driving anywhere. The car refused to start. Panic struck. We started thinking that it's hella weird that it would be too frozen to start because it had only been like 4-5 hours before it last was in use and after all it's not like there's -20 °C outside or something.
We started to fall into despair after several starting tries (car hardly even made a sound) and realized we're probably gonna be late for our work shifts. As if an answer to our prayers a random man with a young child is about to enter his car on the same parking lot and I ask him if he can help us. He said that it's probably something with the battery and that he could give us a ride, omg. ;_;
At the info desk one could purchase something
small to eat and drink. This was good considering
the poor opening times of the cafeteria.
So we got to the con in time, thanks to this friendly man who happened to show up at the right moment. Me and Sacchan did our last pass and meanwhile we tried to spread the word that we had a major car malfunction and would need to get it fixed or we'd be stuck 250+ km from home. Luckily for us Skecon has a lot of absolutely wonderful people and the other con workers spread the word around. Turns out that one of the girls in the info (if I recall right) is a mechanic and that my old con buddy since 2012, aka Mikael Alm Fjällborg, has a heart of gold.
This is Mikael in his Pokémon outfit.
We got together a bunch of people who went out of their way to fetch all possible tools and cables that could be needed to get the car working again. It is later confirmed that it indeed is the battery that died and needed to be replaced. Why now of all times? Then again, old car and batteries do eventually stop working...
Sacchan and some others went to Biltema to fetch a new battery. It took a couple hours and I stayed at the con overtime to wait for the others to return. Mikael offered to pay half of the cost and I'm seriously super thankful to him because we all were poor, especially Sacchan herself, whose car it is. The battery was changed into a smaller one but we were told that it would be enough to make the car function anyway.
The car started and we could leave Skecon behind us without further worries... or that's what I'd like to tell you. In the beginning everything went fine, we stopped at a gasoline station outside Skellefteå to fill the tank and continued northwards on the E4, the main road. We had time to drive a little bit under 30 kilometers when the car suddenly alarmed of battery malfunction. How is this possible, it was just changed? I freeze in panic, Sacchan panics even more and I can see that she is about to break down, tears are building at the corner of her eyes. I tell her to stop the car once someone in the backseat (Marcus or Firith) comments something that in the worst case it could blow up. The problem is that we're on the middle of the main road, on which one does not simply stop. But we have no choice but to park at the side of the road and put on the emergency lights. Sacchan has a complete mental breakdown, I'm about to cry because she's crying and I'm trying so damn hard to hold it in and try to comfort her instead. Marcus calls for help. Turns out they can't help us. He calls somewhere else and it turns out that we can't tow the car because of there being no towing insurance in the Finnish insurance company it's registered in, or something. Besides, no one of us could probably afford it anyway.
So yeah, we prepare for the cold (it's cold outside) and take the blankets and just sit and wait until someone eventually stops to help us, which is unlikely because we're on the main road on which stopping is forbidden. We waited about 45 minutes before a car came to our aid, a middle-aged couple who happened to have the equipment –and the heart– to tow us to the nearest village, a place called Byske. They left us at Byske bus station and I couldn't help but wonder what kind of humor God has that it had to be Byske of all possible places in Sweden. You guys probably don't know but ever since Skecon a few years back Byske has been dubbed "Sweden's Simo", thanks to Sacchan and her little brother Joni's comment when they took the bus that year and it stopped at Byske. Joni said the legendary comment, something along the lines of "Mitä helvettiä, ollaanko me Simossa?" (translates to "what the hell, are we in Simo?") and it has been an inside joke since then.
Now that we were stranded in Byske there were few options one could take. One was the bus but three out of four of us wouldn't have the money for that and I have no idea how in hell we'd get all our luggage with us either. Marcus got the contact information to a local mechanic but turns out that the guy is away from the town and wouldn't be back for God knows how long. Sacchan is still feeling like shit but manages to call her parents for help – her dad works with cars and heavy vehicles and would drive down all the way from Finland to help, although not amused.
Meanwhile we wait we prepare for the worst. It gradually gets colder and I'm so fucking thankful that despite this catastrophe we were more than well prepared for it with a lot of extra blankets, extra food etc – luck in misfortune. I have no idea how long we stayed in the car but at some point I got a sudden headache and Firith could instantly tell that it was related to the cold after my description. I don't even know how to explain that feeling when you end up in this kind of sudden and even dangerous situation. It's really weird. At some point your survival insticts kick in...
Marcus managed to go ask at a nearby foodstore if we could warm us in there and they were okay with it; I'm kinda surprised that anything was even open on a Sunday afternoon/evening in a small village like this. I was prepared to be forced to sit in the car until everyone slowly gets hypotermia. But yeah, we got out of the car and headed for the foodstore everyone was so damn frozen – I think Firith might have said something having problems to walk. We chilled in there until I felt like I was about to go crazy of waiting. I know we were stuck in Byske for over 5 hours, with everyone's phones low on battery and with shitty phone network too. The feeling when you try so hard not to panic that you almost turn apathetic in the end. You could almost touch the despair.
After forever Sacchan's mother suddenly show up in the foodstore. I swear seeing her face at that moment was like the best thing that could ever happen – it meant that we were about to finally get out of this frozen hell.
Sacchan's dad somehow got the car to start again and for a moment it seemed almost too easy. Me and Marcus went to sit in Sacchan's parents car while Firith and Sacchan were in her car. We barely had time to exit Byske before the car suddenly died again – oh fuck. This time it took a lot longer to fix and I'm not sure what exactly her dad did but he put something inside the car and did something with some cables. It started working again. Sacchan's dad made sure to drive in front and constantly check that his daughter was following behind, during the whole trip. I found it cute.
The driving conditions north from Byske but before Piteå were absolutely horrible. Talk about snowstorm. It was snowing so much that one could barely see one meter ahead and the road was almost impossible to see as well. Really scary, to be honest. Luckily it didn't last for much more than maybe 20 kilometers – what you mean local snowstorm?
I'm not sure how but Sacchan managed to drive her car all the way to Haparanda before it finally died outside Marcus' apartment, after doing some weird sounds. It had to be towed the rest of the way. Sacchan later told me that during the last 100 km the car had started warning about the battery and it's a miracle that it even worked for that long.
So yeah, despite the horrible end (that ended sort-of-well) Skecon this year was a good convention. It was clear that there were some issues with the information and organization but considering what a short time frame they probably had to work with I can't blame them for it. Campus as a con building works and I must say that I really liked that the "comfy corner" was back, been missing it since the very first Skecon in 2012. Too bad there was no anime karaoke room this year though, Firith would have loved that. Regarding working at Skecon I had fun and it was a giving experience – I'm sure that I'd like to work again at future Skecons too! Once again it's the people that make a con go from good to great. Skecon sure has potential and even though it's clear that they had a smaller budget than before they made it work decently. I will definitely keep attending Skecon and bring my friends there. Thanks for this experience and thanks to all the amazing people I met!
Thanks for reading and stay cool!
[Sponsored] Lens review: GEO Animation CP-S1 (Sharingan)
Hello to everyone!
Today I have a really rad lens up for reviewing that I'm sure a lot of anime fans have at least heard about! It's no less than the immensely popular Sharingan (lit. Copy Wheel Eye) lenses from the Naruto universe and, more specifically, the GEO Animation CP-S1*– which is the fully matured three tomoe (comma) Sharingan that is used by several members of the Uchiha clan, including Sasuke Uchiha. It's the most versatile and well-known of all the different Sharingan eyes. These lenses are also known as GEO Crazy CP-S1.
This pair was sponsored by a very trusted and known lens shop based in Malaysia, LensVillage. Be sure to check out their store by clicking the name – they have a lot of lenses (both crazy and circle lenses) available! ♡ My lenses arrived within 2 weeks ~
 * = this lens is currently out of stock, I will link to it once it's available again!
Be sneaky at checkout and use my discount code "SAMURAI15" to slash 15% OFF sitewide at LensVillage!
This review contains 100% my honest opinion, even though these lenses were sponsored for review purposes.
Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 14.2 mm
Water content: 42%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)
These lenses are a part of GEO's Crazy Lens series, aka Animation. GEO has made several different Naruto Sharingans exclusively for cosplayers and this pair is one of them. Also, GEO is the most popular circle lens brand and always should come with green anti-fake stickers that you can check up online, to prove that your received pair is authentic and safe to wear. LensVillage sells genuine lenses.
For those not familiar with the Naruto series Sharingan is one of the Three Great Eye Techniques (the other two being Byakugan and Rinnegan) and is a special type of doujutsu (pupil technique) that naturally occurs in all members of the famed Uchiha clan. The Sharingan's first and most well-known ability is to copy any technique that it sees. It can copy and thus memorize ninjutsu (ninja techniques), genjutsu (illusionary techniques) and taijutsu (hand-to-hand techniques) of opponents with perfect accuracy and allow the user to use said techniques. Sharingan wielders also have the ability to predict an opponent's movement, as well as being able to track fast-moving objects with great precision, along with some other things.
Needless to say I think I'd be pretty right in guessing that many Naruto fans have a knack for the Sharingan and, at least once, fancied the thought of having these iconic eyes with great powers... – now you can! Sharingan contact lenses look like the real deal and are a great asset to cosplayers as well as any fan!
~~~~~~~~~~~

As with any lenses (no, Sharingan is not an exception) I put these to soak the night before wearing them. Just by looking at the lenses it's clear that these will be highly pigmented. I was honestly super excited to try out my first Naruto themed colored contact lenses!

One lens in. I have light blue-gray eyes naturally.
Okay so, my first impression when I saw myself with these lenses on was "wow dang, these are hella rad! 8D". I must mention too that they were super easy to insert and as soon as I put them in I didn't even feel them in my eyes! Sure that the corners of my vision are slightly red (especially in poorer lights) but it's to be expected seeing how the pupil hole is small which is a good thing in this case because it makes it so that your real eye color won't show through much in the center.

Regarding the design I definitely have no complaints because these look like the real deal, just like in the anime! The color coverage is amazingly opaque and the vibrant red shade is intense and really noticeable – I seriously love these lenses. This is definitely one of the coolest colored contact lenses that I've ever had! The color is so impressive and bright that it will show up as a true red no matter what your real eye color might be.
These Sharingan lenses are not too big either – there's a very slight size increase but it's really nothing big enough to look weird on anyone.

Lens photos incoming!
All photos taken by me during a November afternoon with a cloudy sky.
There's no color filters or such on the close-up photos and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.

Bathroom light.
Flash photo.
White-ish corridor light.
Yellow light in the staircase.
Outdoors, back against light. (aka facing the wall)
Outdoors, facing the light. Cloudy sky.
Regarding comfort these are really good! I can easily wear them for 7 hours with pretty much no issues. I actually went out in town with these on and completely forgot that I was wearing them... until I noticed people staring at me, lol. This one adult man who couldn't stop staring though, even after he walked past me his face rotated around just to stare a bit more. xD Oh and yeah, these lenses don't blur my vision, sting or do anything else that's uncomfortable. Here I should perhaps also note that I normally have rather sensitive and dry eyes so yeah, these Sharingan lenses really don't let me down on what's important during a long convention day – comfort.

And lastly I have some distance photos!
Of course, to match the theme, I decided to do an Itachi Uchiha makeup/costume test, my first one ~

The Akatsuki cloak is borrowed from Firith.
By the way, I'm honestly starting to think that I really should cosplay Itachi...
What do you think?

So to sum it all up: I honestly can't find anything negative to say about these lenses. It's really the perfect pair for all Naruto cosplayers and yes, they're visible even from afar. These lenses will complete any Uchiha cosplay and also characters like Kakashi Hatake etc. I can whole-heartedly recommend this pair to virtually anyone who wants to try them out and no, you don't need to like Naruto to appreciate how awesome these red eyes are. ;) I'd totally repurchase these in a heartbeat!
So, basically if you ever wanted to try out Sharingan effect lenses then the GEO Animation CP-S1 are definitely worth your money.

Remember, use my discount code "SAMURAI15" to enjoy 15% OFF at LensVillage– take your costuming to the next level!

Short summary:

Color: 10/10
Amazing red color. Extremely rich, highly visible and perfect for cosplay!
Design: 10/10
Great attention to detail. Looks like the real deal, what more could one ask for?
Opacity: 10/10
Perfect color coverage.
Enlargement: 3/10
Slight enlargement effect.
Comfort: 9/10
Highly comfortable. I don't feel them in my eyes and can quite easily wear them for 7 hours with no problems. Gives me red corners in my vision field, but that's to be expected with this type of lenses.
Naturalness: 0/10
Unless you're born an Uchiha, no.

Thanks for reading! If you have any questions then leave a comment! ^.^
Thank youLensVillage for making this review possible! ♡

Hello to you all beautiful people! ヾ(^∇^)ノ

Today I'll tell you all about an online costume store called Cosall! They contacted me a while ago and asked if I was interested in reviewing a cosplay costume for them – of course I said yes! I genuinely love reviewing products/stores and thus helping out the ever-growing cosplay community. Most of you probably haven't heard of them before (honestly, I hadn't either until they contacted me) but they are actually a sister store to the more well-known CosplaySky, which I've also reviewed earlier here. This means that the quality, packaging etc will be similar to CosplaySky because it's basically the same store . ^^ This also means that Cosall aren't stealing photos or anything and the contact person even told me straight out that they're related – thus I had no trusting issues with this collaboration.

Okay, so with that cleared up I want to say that Cosall, at least based on my experience, is easier to deal with (in terms of customer service) and tends to have better discounts/sales. I actually should tell you guys that this review is really late because I underwent surgery earlier this year and, even though I had numerous hospital visits and delays with being able to do the review (because of recovery and limited bodily movement), yet all through this mess Cosall was extremely patient, always friendly and human. I honestly can't thank them enough for being so understanding, despite my lateness, and I definitely think they deserve a gold star for how much they care and how professional they were from beginning to end – not even once did I feel like they were disappointed or annoyed with me for being incapable of holding the original time frame.

What I really like with Cosall is that they promote the idea that cosplay is for everyone – it's so important! This also shows in their sizing options because on a majority of their costumes there's a custom size option and, in those cases it's not available, the sizes tend to run from XS to XXXL. I'm positive though that even if the custom size option is not available you can contact them and ask to have it custom made by sending in your measures!

Cosall mainly sells cosplay costumes but also shoes, wigs, props and even mascot costumes for affordable prices. They sport a rather large (and constantly increasing) collection – ranging from TV-series, celebrities and movies to anime, Vocaloids, video games and super heroes. There's also costumes for kids and even some geek-inspired hoodies!

Photo by Sacchan. The cat belongs to Sacchan's family
and his name is Tirppa.
My reviews are always 100% my genuine opinion, no matter if the items were sponsored or bought with my own money. I never compromise my honesty and true thoughts to my readers.

With all of that cleared up I want to welcome you to a detailed, full and honest review of Cosall! I hope you will find this post helpful and feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions after you're done reading. Let's go! ^.^ Psst, there's also a discount code at the end of this post!

~ "Forewords" ~

It should be mentioned that I am very picky when I browse online cosplay costume shops – I do have a habit of always scrutinizing even the smallest details (I'm a perfectionist) and comparing them with official reference photos to see how accurate they really are. I do often try to find the most accurately made costume possible but I also keep realistic expectations in mind – you can't get something that's 100% accurate, well-made and with high-end quality fabrics for cheap. The simple and often true saying of "you get what you pay for"is something that I always keep in mind. :)
Most cosplayers do agree on that quality goes before price, meaning that they are willing to pay more for a nicer costume and yes, I am one of those too. I do believe though that Cosall has a fair price versus quality standard, meaning that considering the price you pay you do get some surprisingly solid and good-looking costumes. There might be a few flaws (example: size, missing small details) but it's often really easy to fix, even for a beginner.

~ Contact, packaging and shipping ~

Cosall contacted me for the first time around April this year. I'm really sorry but because it's been so long I don't remember when exactly I received the costume. What I do remember though is that once the order was submitted I received the costume in two weeks. Two weeks. That's really fast and I even had my cosplay custom sized! Both thumbs up.
Oh and yeah, I had a hard time deciding on what costume to pick but after some thinking I ended up being too tempted by wanting to try something new and so I picked Cheshire Cat from the Japanese mobile game 100 Sleeping Princes & The Kingdom of Dreams, also known as Yume Oukoku to Nemureru 100 nin no Ouji-sama.

The costume arrived in one of those ordinary postal plastic bags. Once I opened it the cosplay itself was inside a nice-looking costume bag (one side clear plastic and other side some kind of rough fabric with small holes) with a plastic zipper to open it. The costume and all its parts (incl. ears and tail) were neatly folded inside the bag. The leather neck straps, arm straps, the key and the arm beads were inside their own ziplock bag. With the costume also came an costume information paper sheet that had a stock photo of the chosen costume, my included custom measurements with their modification scribbles added on top (very convenient!) as well as identification barcodes, along with my country and other information in Chinese that I can't make out. I can't read Chinese, okay?

~ Costume thoughts, fabrics and sewing quality ~

My first thought when I pulled out the costume was that the fabric wasn't even half bad – and this comes from someone who has basically been living with fabrics because my mom used to have her own fabric store. On the store the main fabric is listed as "uniform cloth" (which is a very common term used in costume online shops) but it feels like a medium to lightweight synthetic fabric, most likely a polycotton blend. The fabric is smooth and matte but it seems to be of the kind on which wrinkles will be hard to get rid off and on which sharp objects will snag. There is no stretch nor elasticity to the fabric so yeah, if you order a standard sized costume and happen to fall between two sizes then it's probably safer to order the bigger one and then take it in, if needed.
The exception to the otherwise non-elastic polycotton costume parts are the striped sleeves/gloves, which are made of what I assume to be tricot. Of course the leather parts are faux leather, a thinner type, but even though it's thin and a bit flimsy it doesn't feel like it would break too easily.

Regarding the sewing it seems to be moderately sturdy – pretty much what you'd expect from decent online cosplay stores. I don't feel like the fabric will tear or that a seam will rip when I wear the costume. The stitching is straight, generally neat and doesn't do any weird jumps or other mishaps. The threads used are always of a matching color too! There were some loose threads poking out of some seams etc but those were super easy to just cut off and I expected some anyway since it's really common.

What is included:
• Jacket/hoodie
• Shirt
• Tie
• Pants
• Detached striped sleeves
• Small accessories (leather straps, bead arm bands, key)
• Ears
• Tail

What is NOT included:
• Wig
• Shoes

~ Detailed description of costume parts ~

Jacket: The jacket (or hoodie, if you'd rather call it that) is fully lined in violet, just like the original character's. On the jacket's sleeves there's a heart image printed on in black on the upper part. The hood area and the bottom of the jacket have a wide golden trim running along the edges with two straight stitches running along it, to separate it into three golden lines. A bead decoration (beads are plastic) is attached to the hood at the golden trim on the hood's front half; it runs from one side to the opposite side. There's also some diagonal golden decorations on each side, kinda like pocket trims except that it's no pockets. The zipper is an usual plastic white one with a metallic slider and works as it should, no problems. At the end of the zipper there's a small cat head decoration hanging – it feels like it could be made out of thin silver faux leather. The cat head has some stuffing inside it and it's two-sided, except that there's no eyes on the side facing you.

Shirt: It's definitely a costume shirt and not an ordinary dress shirt. The color is a pale gray and there's brown vertical stripes on it. The collars are hard and crisp, like they should be. The shirt is a bit shorter than your average shirt though and some of the buttons were stitched on a little loose (aka unraveling thread) but that's common even on store-bought buttoned shirts so I did expect it. The very top of the shirt lacks buttons (like a normal shirt) and instead has small ironed "front flaps" to give the opened look. The buttons are really basic semi-transparent white buttons. Short sleeves, like a t-shirt.

Tie: Bright pink with blue stars on it. The stars are printed on. The tie is a bit wider and shorter than usual and it's not pre-tied, meaning that you have to tie it like you would a normal tie. The fabric is thicker than on the jacket but approximately the same as the shirt (except a bit less smooth in touch), it might actually be cotton and not a polycotton blend, although I'm not sure.

Pants: Your typical costume pants with elastics in the bottom. Dark brown, same thickness as the jacket so yeah, not gonna keep you warm if it's even slightly cold outside. The pants reach just below my knees. The pants have a zipper and a button for keeping them on and a little bit of elastic on top to allow for a bit of stretch, which I really appreciate because it's comfortable and noticeably lessens the potential "oh shit the pants might not fit" problem that I tend to have. The pants do have belt loops (usable for putting on the tail) but no pockets.

Detached striped sleeves: These are made of a thin (not see-through thin) and slightly stretchy tricot, seemingly. Striped in a magenta and a brownish red color. They are kept on with elastics at the top. The sleeve mouths flare out into a trumpet-like shape.

Small accessories: The accessories included are one bead arm bracelet, two black faux leather straps for the neck and one for the right arm. On the leather strap for the right arm there's also a bead bracelet attached to it from which a key decoration hangs. The key is detailed and pretty, approximately 8 cm long and made of metal. Each of the leather straps have several punch holes so they should fit most people. The string the bead bracelets are is elastic.

Ears: The ears are a lot nicer than I expected! It's a soft and pleasant brown fur fabric, doesn't look cheap or anything. No annoying long fake fur hairs that stick everywhere. The inside of the ears are backed with some soft light pink fabric; I recognize the fabric type but I can't remember what it's called, it's soft, fluffy and the weave is easily visible – it's the kind that uneven nails get stuck on, lol.
The ears have a really convenient and easy to use closure system, it's those usual hair snap clips; check the separate photo to see it. :)

Tail: The tail is made of a soft fluffy textured fabric, most likely fleece. It has dark gray and white parts that are sewn together into a long tail. It's fully posable (there is a thick steel wire inside) and to attach it there's one of those small metallic hooks that you commonly see on necklaces – again, check the separate photo to see it. It's approximately 75 cm long when straightened.

~ Sizing ~

Seeing how I got my costume custom sized I can't speak for the standard sizes but yeah, as far as custom sizing go I want to mention that it's important that you don't add additional centimeters to your real measures because Cosall does that for you; you can even see how much they've added if you check the costume paper sheet that came with the order. With this Cheshire Cat cosplay I had no issues whatsoever with anything being too big or too small though – everything fit perfectly and I'm actually really positively surprised because yeah, it's common knowledge that bought costumes tend to have the sizes being off, even with custom sizes.

~ Conclusion and final thoughts ~

I honestly have nothing but praise to say about Cosall. Their customer service is one of the best I've ever had with a costume shop, if not the best. Super kind, prompt, really good English and just genuinely caring about your satisfaction. I can't find anything negative to say and even though that one arm heart(?) decoration was missing it wasn't shown on the stock photo either so yeah, no false advertisement on their side and I thus didn't expect to get it. Of course I would have been even more pleased if the cat head decoration had been metal instead of fabric and if the tail was a bit nicer (gradient color, short fur fabric, cream & brown instead of gray & white) but, once again, seeing how all those things were 100% accurately portrayed on the site I can't complain about that and hey, it works like this too! So yeah, what I'm trying to say is that I experienced no disappointments because, even though some parts differ slightly from the original character, what I received matches the stock photos perfectly and thus I got exactly what I expected.

I would warmly recommend Cosall to anyone looking for a better-than-average online costume store on which you can be sure that what you see is what you get! They also, of course, have decent quality costumes (many can be used as bases if you don't want to sew from scratch) and, on top of that, they have fast and free shipping to anywhere in the world. The free shipping (cheapest/slowest option) really sets them apart from other costume stores because that's a lot of money saved right there! For me, personally, expensive shipping is a huuuuuge dealbreaker and I think I'm not the only one thinking that, heh.
My experience with Cosall has been a positive one and I'd definitely say that their shop is trustable and worth a visit!

If you want to buy something from Cosall you can use the discount code CACASS to get 15% off on any order! o/

Final Grade (from A-F): A-
Recommend to others: Yes

That's all for today. Thank you for reading! I hope this was helpful ~
Also, don't forget to check out Cosall if you want to buy a costume or know someone else who does! ^_-

  Big thanks to Cosall for making this review possible!

Cheshire Cat cosplay shoes

Hello my friends!

You've probably by now seen that I reviewed my Cheshire Cat cosplay costume from a game called 100 Sleeping Princes & The Kingdom of Dreams, also known as Yume Oukoku to Nemureru 100 nin no Ouji-sama in Japanese. Yeah, long name is long. Thing is that I didn't get any shoes with the costume and so I decided to make some myself... or well, modify from existing shoes.
The hard part was to find suitable shoes that I could use as a base. I had to plow through all second-hand stores in both Tornio and Kemi on several occasions (under a half year period) before I had a lucky strike at a second-hand store in Kemi called Viikkotori. I found a pair of suede boots in a lilac-tinted brown color and, although they were a size smaller than what I'd normally wear, they were still wearable (much to my surprise) and not as uncomfortable as I would have expected! I have quite small feet to begin with, for being a guy at least (EU size 40), but luckily that works to my advantage in this kind of cosplays when I have to look for women's shoes because men's shoes just don't have the kind of heel that the costume requires, lol.

Here's the shoes before any modifications.
I think they cost 5 € and were in surprisingly good shape – no obvious signs of wear and tear. I especially wanted suede boots because suede looks softer than leather and that's how I imagine Cheshire Cat's shoes. It was so hard to find fitting shoes and I'm still surprised that I even found these boots because they are as close to perfect as I could possibly have gotten. Thanks luck.

Cheshire Cat reference.
My original idea was to use worbla to cover the heel to make it have a more "metallic" look to it but yeah, the more I started thinking the less it felt like a good idea and the more it felt like me just wanting to avoid painting suede because I had no idea if one could even paint it successfully. I'm not sure if said boots are make of fake or real suede (there were no labels/tags to help) but before I started painting them I did a fabric check on an inconspicuous spot to see if the fabric paint I had would work or not. I've heard that if it's real suede it would soak right in and barely tint the material, but if it sticks then it's faux suede. So yeah, I did a paint test on the upper part of the heel's inside and the paint seemed to stick just fine I was relieved!

Painting time ~
I started to paint all the golden parts. Fun fact: I had lost my main set of paint brushes so I only, of course, found the smallest detail brush ever and had to make do with it; it took forever and was tedious af. I did two layers to get better coverage and avoid the "brush stroke" effect that a single coating did. On some parts I took artistic liberties because, as far as I know, there's not any other official image of Cheshire Cat that would show his shoes from a different angle and thus I can't know how those swirls look on the other side.
The paint I'm using is a water-based universal paint with a metallic effect, for your information. It's hobby paint in a small plastic bottle, by a German brand called Efco.

After I was done with all the painting I needed to make those little cute silver cat head decorations that he has on his shoes. Good thing I had some leftover polymer clay lying around since the days I made Ibuki's little amulet thingy– now I finally got some use for it!
One little problem though that showed up was that I have no own oven and the only one there is in this building is the one in the common kitchen. The problem is that said oven hasn't been working properly (or at all) for a long time now and I certainly don't trust it after a few previous bad experiences. So yeah, I asked my good friend Sacchan if I could come over during a weekend and borrow their oven – green lights!

Polymer clay cat decorations in the making.
I was a bit worried that the polymer clay might have hardened over the years but luckily it was still workable after some kneading. I made two flat cat faces, a couple centimeters long each. It took me a while to get them as identical as possible but I didn't strive for perfection this time because that would have taken way longer than I had patience for, lol.

I used that little tool to punch the eye holes. Efficient!
This is taken after I had baked the clay, btw.
We had some ridiculous issues with baking them because the description says about 30 minutes in 110 °C but that didn't do jackshit to our creations (Sacchan also made an accessory for one of her cosplays). Then again, the oven doesn't close completely so that might have played a part too. We had to keep them in the oven a lot longer but luckily, at some point, they actually hardened and changed color.

When I got home I went ahead and painted them with silver spray paint and hung them to dry in the shower. It didn't occur to me then but I noticed afterwards that even long after the paint should have been completely dry the cat heads felt... sticky. Not sticky in a non-dry way but sticky in a more greasy way. At first I was confused but then I did some research (should have done it before, oops) and came to the conclusion that one should avoid painting/sealing polymer clays with petroleum-based paints. Pretty much all spray paints I've ever used are alkyd-based and not water-based so, yeah. :| I read something that it might over time damage/dissolve/soften/whatnot the clay (depending on brand) but oh well, it's done already and it's not like it would be much work to replace these cat charms afterwards, if needed. I'll see how long they hold and remake them if necessary.

Spray painted and hung to dry.
After some time the charms had, surprisingly, dried enough to not feel greasy anymore. I didn't think they would but seems like at least Cernit brand polymer clay does...

Now the only thing left was to attach the kitty charms to the shoes. Hot glue might have been an option but I much rather wanted to sew them on, especially since the eye holes allowed for it. I dug out my old leftover fishing line and used it as sewing thread– it's amazing because it's super strong and transparent, which means that the "thread" is close to invisible!

Finished Cheshire Cat cosplay boots!
That's all for this post! ^_^

Lens review: I.Fairy Ruby Red

Hello everyone!

I'll show you peeps the beautiful I.Fairy Ruby Red circle lenses, also sometimes known as Vassen Ruby Red. ^^ I originally bought these to use for when I cosplay Chikage Kazama (Hakuouki) but I have yet to cosplay him and, sadly, the expiry date is closing in on these and thus I had to open them. I always viewed the I.Fairy Ruby series as a cosplay lens and now let's see if you agree!

Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 16.2 mm
Water content: 55%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)

These lenses have a rather simple design featuring a black limbal ring with some longer and shorter streaks reaching towards the pupil. The design of the I.Fairy Ruby series is like a middleground between anime/fantasy and semi-natural – these red lenses could work for cosplay purposes as well as for some creepy cute lolita outfits etc. I'd say that because of the design the Ruby series is a pretty versatile lens.

The first time I wore these lenses was at a con. I had no problems inserting them and they were comfortable right off the bat. Too bad they started to feel dry already after the first hour had passed and, while I can't know exactly becaus I didn't check the clock, I couldn't wear these longer than for something between 2-4 hours. The same thing happened the second time I wore these as well, really comfortable once inserted but start to feel dry after 1 hour.
I'm not sure if I just got an Monday example or if the fast drying is because these lenses would have expired in their vials in January next year, had I not opened them.

One lens in. Notice the size difference.
You can see that these lenses are big. Not humongously big but I.Fairy type of big, if you know what I mean. The thick black limbal ring also adds to the illusion of the eyes being bigger and it also makes the lenses look 'anime'. The size doesn't hinder my vision in any way.

The color is defiitely a red that shows up well, slightly more on the deep/dark side but still not a dark shade in itself. In some lights I have noticed that it takes on a pinkish tint though but, then again, that could vary depending on what your natural eye color is – mine is a light blue-gray.
The lenses have a nice color coverage. These are especially suitable for cosplayers because the color is very noticeable from a distance and it photographs well.

Lens photos ahead!
All photos taken by me during a November afternoon with a clear sky and approaching sunset.
There's no color filters or such on the close-up photos and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.

What more can I say? It's a pretty red multi-purpose lens and I would recommend trying these if you are in need of red lenses. Just be aware that I.Fairy always have big lenses and if you have small eyes it might not look the best on you, of course depending on the person.
As far as naturalness goes I wouldn't call these natural but they are surprisingly okay for being an unnatural color; they don't look scary for being a red lens and that's quite a feat. With that said I still wouldn't wear these as an everyday lens (then again, if you like to stand out then go for it!) but they do work for j-fashion and such, especially those with darker themes since red eyes often add to the look. Goths and rockers might enjoy these lenses too, hehe.

Lens review: I.Fairy Tofi Gray

Hello everyone!

For today's post I'll be doing a circle lens review. ^^ I'm gonna show you the I.Fairy Tofi Gray lenses, wopee! I normally don't really prioritize gray lenses (gray is kind of a dull color if you ask me, lol) but these seemed so fancy that I wanted to give them a try! Also, I was expecting these to be really good as cosplay lenses.

Roll out the review!

Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 16.2 mm
Water content: 55%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)

Okay so, I.Fairy lenses – these will be big. I.Fairy lenses are always big so be prepared for that if you ever get any! But yeah, the Tofi series has a really distinct and recognizable pattern; I'm not sure what exactly to call it but it reminds me slightly of some sort of flower petals, I don't know. Whatever it is it looks nice and I like how the inner center has a darker gradient – makes the lenses have more depth to them.

The color is like a medium to light gray, really pretty and with excellent color coverage. The lens has a lot of pigment but where the lens meets the pupil hole there's an obvious clashing effect because it doesn't fade or blend into my eyes, even though I have light blue-gray eyes. Then again, most opaque lenses don't fade towards the center anyway so it's not like I was expecting these to have a natural blending effect, lol. Just wanted to mention it since I know that some circle lens wearers are bothered by an obvious "this is where the lens ends and you can clearly see my true eye color in a ring around the center". :) But then again, I don't think that anyone who buys these lenses expect them to look realistic anyway.

One lens in. Notice size difference.
I had some slight issues getting these lenses into my eye and they felt a bit itchy after insertion – I waited it out and afterwards it was fine. These don't blur my vision or anything but they started to feel dry already after 30 minutes! D: Then again, I've had especially dry eyes lately so that might have played a part, along with the fact that these lenses would have expired in next January if I hadn't opened them. So yeah, even though I couldn't stand these for much longer than 1,5 hours I think the approaching expiry date and my sensitive eyes might have played a big part in the comfort issues – I don't think these would be as drying for others. My eyes felt really dry after I took the lenses off, by the way.

Lens photos below!
All photos taken by me during a November afternoon with a clear sky and with the sun low on the horizon, sunset. There's no color filters or such on the close-up photos and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.

Outdoors, facing the setting sun.
In terms of color and design these lenses are really likable – I can definitely see these being used for cosplay, especially. The bold color and the black limbal ring make these peepers look animated. I just wish I had been luckier with the comfort because they dry so fast for me that they're barely wearable. :/ Then again, as I said previously I'm pretty sure this would have been a non-issue if I had opened them earlier and not waited until there's only a couple months left. So yeah, please take my comfort grade with a grain of salt.

Check out these reviews: Gold

Short summary:

Color: 9/10
A really nice medium light gray color. Shows up amazingly.
Design: 9/10
Pretty and unique design that makes my eyes look 'anime'. Reminds me slightly of flower petals.
Opacity: 9/10
Excellent color coverage.
Enlargement: 8/10
I.Fairy lenses are always big, what did you expect?
Comfort: 2/10
Felt itchy upon insertion and dry out really fast. Can't wear them much longer than 1,5 hours.
Naturalness: 3/10
Not really natural. The color is too opaque and bold and the lenses certainly don't have a realistic print.

The making of Hotaru's tengu geta!

$

Hello buddies ~

I'm a bit crazy for attempting this, I confess. But as a sort-of-perfectionist when it comes to my own cosplay making I decided that this would at the very least be a wildly interesting challenge to go through, both in making and in wearing the finished product, which, in this case, is a pair of tengu geta! You see, Hotaru is always seen in the manga wearing these 10 cm high Japanese wooden geta shoes – except that his signature footwear only has one ha (teeth) to stand on – yikes!
Needless to say this is gonna be one hell of a trial to actually figure out how to walk with these beasts! I'm gonna need to prepare myself for some serious balance training, huff puff.

Sooooo... are you interested in following my adventures in making some serious suicide shoes? If yes, read ahead and remember build and wear these at your own risk. Hohohoho ~
Warning: this is gonna be a long post.

Hotaru reference.
When I first thought about cosplaying Hotaru, for several years ago, I was thinking about just making ordinary geta (aka those with two teeth) and painting them red and call it close enough. I was afraid of making tengu geta because of the hazards they'd come with once you slip them into your feet, hahah.
But then at Närcon 2015 I saw a guy cosplaying Hotaru and, once I asked to take a photo of him, I saw him pull out his tengu geta and change into them! :O He was wearing some kind of comfy-looking sneakers or such as walk-around-the-con shoes. I remember that he had to lean on his two friends to get the shoes on (I guess these two were always around him, just in case he'd trip or something) and once he was done he could actually stand with them on without having anyone pressed next to him! Seeing him standing on those crazy shoes without any support made me think "if he can do it, so can I!" and yeah, I did ask him later if it was hard to walk in those skyscrapers and he said that it's actually not that hard to walk in them... but standing still is a whole different story. *badumtssh*

How can he jump around, fight and run with those on??
But yeah, these things ain't easy to move around in; you're constantly worried about tripping over something, losing your balance, falling over someone, getting accidentally bumped in crowds or entering an area with uneven/bumpy ground etc. You really can't move around freely because you have to be 110% aware of your surroundings at all times... or else you'll be effectively face-planting.
I'll be sure to always bring with me a second pair of shoes whenever I bring my Hotaru cosplay to a con because hey, I will need comfier shoes and something that's a bit less risky to move around in. Having "tengu-legs" all day doesn't sound like the most sober idea I'd ever have – these are likely best suited for photoshoot occasions or for the mildly crazy ones out there.

I apologize for the crummy cellphone-quality on most of the photos ahead; I didn't have my SLR camera with me in school during this project.

Okay so, I started this project on early March 2016. Because I'm cheap and stuff I did this during school on my woodwork class... or well, it's not actually called that but woodwork is what a big majority of the students are doing during class so, err, yeah. The class is actually called "redesign" and "furniture renovation". We work in a garage that belongs to the school and there we have a lot of power tools, paints, sand paper and whatever you might need – including free wood.
I knew that I needed to use some kind of wood that could take my whole body weight and would be durable yet preferably not too heavy or else wearing my shoes would be like walking with anchors strapped to my ankles, lol. I checked first through the "trash box", aka where all the scrap wood pieces were but I didn't find anything suitable in there. I then went to check the actual wood storage and found a thick plank that seemed suitable. I went to ask my teacher and he said that "you should be able to jump with shoes out of that" and so I assumed it was okay to use. xD Problem was that I couldn't find another plank of the same wood, width and thickness so yeah, I had to go with something else. I searched around for quite a while before I laid my eyes on some scrapped wooden bed legs – they had just the right thickness and seemed very sturdy! I went to ask my teacher if said legs belonged to anyone else's project but he said that I could take them, hell yeah!

Got my wood!
For those wondering what woods these are the plank is Scots pine, aka European redwood. Note though that it was painted in some white paint before I took it, hence the pale color. The former bed legs are made out of beech. I reserve the right for any misinformation since I'm just stating what my teacher told me; I'm not a wood expert and I don't know if he is either.
The Swedish names, for those curious, is 'furu' (the plank) and 'bok' (the legs).

Even though it's officially mentioned that Hotaru's tengu geta only have 10 cm long teeth I decided to screw that and made mine 15 cm instead. Normally I'd always go for accuracy but I honestly thought that 10 cm looked stupidly short and I always thought that his geta looked taller than that in the manga anyway, lol. I'll probably regret this choice once I have to walk in them...

Aaaaand back to the project!
After I had found the pieces that I needed and marked where I needed to cut I went and said hello to the new love of my life... err... the circular saw. I had never used one before and, hot damn, is it a handy asset to have when working with wood! It just takes a few seconds and bam, you're done!

Too bad I can't steal it without anyone noticing....
Pieces cut.
Next up was some rigorous sanding, except on the 'tooth' parts since those are already smooth and all thanks to being a recycled leg piece from a bed. Save time, effort and nature, wohoo! I sanded the body pieces of the shoes until they were smooth like a duck's butt and then I sanded some more. All the previous white paint that was on them came off.

Everything sanded and the placement for the 'teeth' are marked.
Now came a brainstorming session with my teacher about how to proceed and if it would even be possible to walk with these things strapped to my feet. He googled 'tengu geta' and pointed out how other examples had a slanted shape on the underside, likely to provide stabilization and support for the 'tooth'. Don't quote me on that though, it's just a guess.

Example photo from Google.
Now I can say that I've seen tengu geta without those triangular slanted shapes on the underside (mainly homemade pairs) but I'm fairly certain having them makes these monsters easier to walk on. I thought long and hard if I should add them or not; not adding them would be more character accurate but adding them would likely lessen the risk of me faceplanting everywhere and so, the question stood, should I go for accuracy or for convenience and safety? Which one weighed more?
It was a really hard decision to make but I decided on adding them in the end, mainly because I really don't have the best balance to begin with and I don't want to kiss the floor at cons, unintentionally.
Off I go to find something usable in the scrap wood box!

DO DO DO DOOOOOOOH ~
Another bed leg to the rescue! :'DD No but really, this one had one side already in a slanted shape that had been glued on – a perfect starting point for an occasionally lazy cosplayer like me, lol. Thank you beds for sacrificing yourselves for a good cause.
I had really good luck because each of these scrap legs were 18 cm long (the leg part, not counting the fastener top) and my geta needed two 9 cm long pieces per underside, bingo! So of course I decided to just cut one in half and use the more slanted half for the front half and the less slanted for the back half. I hope my explanations are not too bad. What I was less lucky with was that these pieces are not as wide as my geta's main body but yeah, I thought I could deal with it because it's not a ridiculously noticeable difference and, well, it won't be seen all that much anyway; I just want something to support the 'teeth' and balance out the weight a little, without having to put a shitlot of time into making it.

At first I had thought that I'd just saw off the piece that I wanted but then one of the assistant teachers looked at the bed leg and saw that the glue fastening had started giving way; he said we could likely just split them open with a knife in the seam and a couple hits with a hammer – said and done!

Slanted pieces separated. One is glued.
As you can see on the photo above one of the pieces cracked because it didn't come off cleanly. Luckily it didn't break in two, so we just glued it and put some pressure clamps on. The knife pictured is the one we used, in case anyone wonders.

Next up I moved to work on the main body again. I decided that I wanted the teeth platforms to have some extra support to hold on to so I decided to make a groove in the underside of the shoe's body to sink them into. It was really important that the groove was as close to the tooth's width as possible so that it would be snug and not wobble around. Every millimeter was important and I had to be really really careful. But instead of carving out the grooves by hand (which would be quite some work and take time) I had a genius flash and turned my gaze to the circular saw, once again.

I'm a clever little shit!
I basically adjusted the circular saw so that it wouldn't go all the way down and then I did a lot of sawing in lines back and forth, millimeter by millimeter, until I got a nice groove formed. Fast and efficient!
When I was done with that I took a chisel and smoothed out the roughness caused by the sawing.

One groove done.
Shoe to the left is smoothed, shoe to the right is raw.
Next I took one of those metallic compasses (?) and marked out the holes and the center of them on the teeth, mainly so that it would be easier for the drill to locate them. I used a 51 mm hole saw on a drill to do the holes, it's pictured on the photo below together with the compass.

Holes made more pronounced, in preparation for sawing.
Holes cut out with the hole saw.
The hole saw got really warm while in use, to the point it actually burned the wood and reeked of smoke hence why the holes look blackish on the edges. It started to smell burnt, it was kinda scary. :S The drill even shut itself down to cool down when I was half-way done, oops. I need to mention though that beech is an amazing wood, it doesn't crack nor splinter at all!

Next I marked out the placements for the hanao, aka the thongs. I then fetched some rope of the thickness I'd want to use and picked out some leftover fabric from school; the fabric is actually a former couch cover pillow thingy and thus it was perfect for my project because I wouldn't need to buy any cotton filling for the hanao!
I drilled the holes and realized that the fabric rope I first had set my eyes on sadly won't be durable enough. Luckily a trip to a mixed store afterwards provided me with a white synthetic rope that was cheap, had a nice thickness, a lot of meters and was durable too!

I noticed at some point that, for some reason, the holes on the ha weren't on the same spot, even though they should have been – good thing for me was that I had saved a reserve bed leg, just in case, and now it came to use. I shortened it to the right length, drilled the hole in it and then I had a much more identical second "tooth"! It also fit better into the groove when I did a test-run, aka the new one didn't wobble around as much.

Summer vacation came and went and I didn't progress on these shoes for months because duh, no school. :'D The project continued again on 30th August and the first thing I did was to refresh my memory of what I had been planning for these shoes. I remembered where I had left off and continued by gluing each tooth to the main body of the shoes. I used normal wood glue and pressure clamps.

Tengu geta glued and put to dry.
I left the glue to dry for a couple days, aka until my next lesson. The next time I came to work on my shoes the glue had dried completely and I took them out of the pressure clamps. But upon taking off the clamps I noticed that one of them had pressed an ugly mark onto the main body of one of the shoes; I didn't notice before but one of the pressing "plates" on the clamp, that you screw onto your item to hold it in place, had an uneven surface. Luckily it was not a big deal because I would have to go through and use filler to even out cracks and shit anyway.
But before I started with the whole filler mission I decided to make each tooth extra sturdy and thus I went ahead and drilled some screws into them – don't want to take any risks with the glue failing me after some time of use! Okay so I basically just marked out the spots for each screw (two per geta), drilled the holes, used a thicker drill to "carve" out space for the screw head and lastly I, of course, drilled the screws into the geta. I placed the holes about 2 cm into the body from each side. Each screw was about 4-5 cm long.

Screws drilled in place.
Notice the pressure marks from the clamp as well.
After the screws were drilled in I found some wood filler that I thought I could test. I didn't quite like how it behaved (I think it might have been semi-dry because the person who used it before me didn't close it properly after use) and so I gave up on it and went with normal filler instead. I carefully went through the whole shoes to even out any cracks, splinters and unevenness. Once that was done my class had ended and I left my tengu geta to dry upright on a shelf.

The wood filler that I tried using. It sucked. :(
During next class my shoes had dried and I continued by sanding down the excess filler until I got my geta as smooth as possible. After that I wiped them dry of the sanding/filler dust with a towel and then I went to purchase some spray primer, because it's a lot faster and easier than using ordinary primer in paint form.

Before priming my project I took a good look at the current progress. I remembered the existence of those slanted pieces that I made out of the bed legs and messed around with them, to try to simulate if they would actually do as much of a difference in balance and sturdiness as I had thought. I got more and more sceptical because after doing some simulations it seemed like they didn't actually do much at all to increase the safety of me standing on these murder shoes; I started to think that maybe they don't give the desired effect because it's not from the same block of wood as the main body. So yeah, after some thinking I decided to forgo these slanted pieces (after all the work I put into them) because they didn't really seem to do as much of a difference as I had hoped and yeah, if they don't do their work then I'd rather be more accurate to the character and go without.

Comparison with one shoe with the slants and the other without.
So yeah, I left the "stability pieces" out of my project and continued with priming my shoes. I let them dry and added another coating. The drying time took long enough that my class ended before I could get to start with the actual painting job.

Primed geta.
Next time was painting time! I had previously decided on using the same metallic red vax paste that I used for painting Hotaru's sword a while ago. I wanted them to match and the color (and the vax paint itself) is awesome and super quick to use! So yeah, this paint is really chunky and you apply it by using a soft piece of fabric or a sponge – I use a torn piece of an old bed sheet. I spent a lot of hours painting my shoes, did two layers and was very careful to avoid as much "color-stealing fingerprints" as possible because yeah, I need to seal this thing after it has dried or it will continue to smudge off ever so slowly when I touch it. :D It got kinda hard in the end to not accidentally touch some spot when you were painting another – the only area that didn't matter was the actual part of the shoe that will touch the ground when I wear these.

Painting in progress.
Once the shoes had dried I returned to seal them with a clear gloss varnish. When I was done spraying them I carefully put the shoes upright to dry on a shelf in the garage; I should have realized that this was not the safest space to put them on because the shelf itself is vintage, narrow and wobbly – I remember thinking before I left that I'll move them to a safer place once I could touch them on the next lesson. But of course, once the next time came about I of course forgot about that tiny little detail. So yeah, when I came to check on the varnish I noticed that the paint still left fingerprints and thus a second coating was needed. I opened the drawer under the shelf (the shelf was separate and on top of the drawer, fyi) to look for my varnish can, which was not there, and then I closed the drawer without thinking and – BAM! Of course the impact from closing the drawer (it doesn't go in smoothly) made the whole shelf shake and my shoes fell down. One shoe survived without taking any damage but the other one hit one of its front edges against a wooden chair and the tip of the edge got worn down and lost its point. Fuck my life. :)) I was really annoyed with myself because I could so easily have avoided this unnecessary and stupid mishap (I even reminded myself before I left last time >_>) and now I had to partially redo the painting job. Its during this kind of times, when you ruin things for yourself when you're almost done, that you want to highfive yourself in the face... with a frying pan.
So yeah, I had to backtrack, try to repair the edge and then repaint the area surrounding the damage and then go back to seal the whole shit again. Oh well, I needed to do a second coat of varnish anyway but yeah, fucking up the the nice edge really sucked donkey balls. I could so easily just have moved them away before closing the damn box.

Once I was done with the painting it was time to actually make the shoes wearable, aka create the hanao. What I did was that I took the previously mentioned synthetic rope and the couch cover fabric thingy that I took from school. I don't know the proper name for the piece but it's fabric with cotton layers/filling added to it, to make it extra soft and thick. So yeah, I had cut out some strips of the fabric and of the rope that would become the hanao. I just simply handsewed the fabric onto the rope, like the photo below shows. The fabric was folded in half and the edges were folded in too. It's important that the rope stays inside the fabric during all times because if it accidentally goes out then it's gonna be a bitch to reinsert once the "fabric tube" is closed.

Sewing the hanao.
This is not any accurate way to do it and no, I did actually not zigzag the edges because I had no sewing machine available; luckily the fabric doesn't seem to fray too easily. What I did though was that I folded in the edges before sewing them closed – should keep them from unravelling too much.
Once I was done with sewing I tied these thongs to my shoes. I didn't do any proper tying because I have no idea how the Japanese actually do it so yeah, just did a lot of basic knots over and over again until I ran out of rope.

Now what was left was to, preferably, find some sort of textured and durable rubber that I could attach to the bottom of the shoes to make them safer to walk on, especially indoors. I've realized from an earlier convention experience that wearing wooden shoes indoors with a plastic floor is like being on an ice-skating rink – in other words, a combo that will lead to injuries. Tengu geta has a higher percentage to lead to injuries anyway lol, who am I fooling?
Okay, so my first thought was to buy one of those car rubber mats and cut out pieces of it and hot glue them on. My second idea was to buy some really cheap second-hand shoes and cut out the bottom and use that but yeah, when I went scouting for suitable shoes it turned out to be harder than I thought. The thing is that I preferably wanted something transparent and so, one day when I passed by Ikea, I suddenly remembered that I had scrap pieces of a colorless anti-slip plastic cover thingy lying around somewhere; I'm sorry but I don't know the proper name for it. ^^" It's a thin transparent rubbery plastic film on a roll with nubs on it. I originally used it to put some inside my cupboard boxes so that all my cooking tools, spice boxes etc would stay in place; also used it for protection and for ease of cleaning. The reason I remembered its existence when I was close to Ikea is because that's where I bought it, for your information.

Before gluing it on.
So I just cut out some fitting pieces and hot glued them on. Of course I put the textured side outwards. I don't know what my hot glue was doing but it didn't seem to want to heat up properly (might be that the electricity is restricted in the garage, idk) and so I fear that these won't hold for very long. Oh well, in case that happens they're super easy to just glue back on at home.

Glued in place and started to trim the corners.
After I had glued the transparent sheets onto the shoes I trimmed the corners and whatever else that was a bit too big. Now to hope that the glue holds... Good thing though is that I have a fair amount left of the plastic thingy so even if I would somehow lose these original ones at a con or something I can easily replace them.

Finished tengu geta for Hotaru.
With that done my tengu geta are finished for now! I might still need to resize the hanao because I fear I might have made them a bit too long but yeah, I can't tell yet if that's gonna be a problem or not since I haven't tried wearing these monster shoes yet. But oh well, in any case I'm happy to finally be done with these shoes because it means that my SDK Hotaru cosplay is now complete!

Lens review: I.Fairy Venus Brown

Hello and happy Independence Day to Finland!

Today I have a circle lens review to share. I will be reviewing the I.Fairy Venus Brown lenses, which I've been eyeing for a long time before I finally decided to try them. It's a really beautiful lens with a unique pattern!

Let's go ~

Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 16.2 mm
Water content: 55%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)

I honestly love the design of these lenses – it's a really unique, gothic, mystical lens with an intricate swirly print. The outer edge is darker than the inner and makes these stand out but in a sophisticated, almost fantasy-like way. The color is a light brown shade, lovely yet soft. The swirls make me think about something Victorian-esque in style. I love these, they really speak volumes to me.

As with any  I.Fairy lenses these are definitely on the big side. The outer edge appears like a dark limbal ring when worn but because it's not solid black it makes the impact a bit smoother and less, err, animated? Not saying its natural but it's a bit watered down when compared to some other circle lenses with bolder limbal rings.

One lens in. Notice enlargement.
About comfort I can say that they aren't so comfortable but still wearable. The first time I tried these I could only wear them for 1 hour before they started to feel blergh; the second time it took 3 hours before they started to feel dry – no super long times but I've had worse. These lenses feel a bit annoying after insertion and I do feel them in my eyes but yeah, I love the design so much that I'll endure it and hey, that "lens in my eye" discomfort does lessen after a while.

Lens photos below!
All photos taken by me during a December morning with a semi-clear sky and a rising sun. Yeah, it's called polar night and the sun barely goes above the horizon, hence the poor/orange light. There's no color filters or such on the close-up photos and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.

Apartment room light. Lamps on.
Bathroom light.
Flash photo.
Facing a window in the corridor. (not sun side)
Yellow light in the staircase.
Outdoors, facing the sun.
Outdoors, facing sun. Cloudy.
Outdoors, back against sun. (facing wall)
I'd definitely recommend these first-hand for peeps who prefer some "darker" fashion styles like goths, steampunk and Visual Kei etc. I guess they'd be fine for cosplay as well but I personally think the Venus series might be better suited for alternative fashion.

I'm a bit disappointed that I couldn't get a photo in clear non-orange sunlight because the sun doesn't rise far up in the horizon anymore (I'm lucky if it gets above the trees, lol) and thus the sunlight is a really bright orange most of the time. I don't have many sunlight hours to take the photos and yeah, I feel like my photos don't do the lenses justice because of that – they're prettier than they look. I had to hurry and my camera wasn't cooperating either... ;_;

Game characters I want to cosplay someday! [pt.2]

Hello people!

With the end of this year approaching I thought it could be a nice idea to go through some more cosplay candidates that I want to do in the future – from different kinds of games, just like in the previous post with the same name. ^_^ This post is not a guarantee that all of these characters will eventually happen but it's a fairly good indicator that I want to do them because yeah, most of these have been on my mind and on my cosplay list for a longer time already and haven't fallen out yet. I admit that there is a higher chance of me doing any of the following characters earlier if some of my friends etc are interested in the same series and/or plan a cosplay group! So yeah, comment if you are hyped about any of the characters/series and we could get something together!

Now let's go, roll out the list ~

Characters are in no particular order.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Game: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate
Character: Ace Commander

I'm a huuuuuge Monster Hunter fanboy and of course I want to cosplay some armor sets etc but yeah, I also want to cosplay some actual characters that you interact with in the games. I really enjoy playing MH4U (1500+ hours and still going!) and I took a big liking to the Ace Commander. I just love how awkward he is with small talk and showing compassion and yet he's the cool leader type who values the other Ace hunters like family and protects them when it's needed. He's pretty relatable and I love his design, color scheme and... well... I have a bias for guys with long silver hair, haha. One day I swear to God I will cosplay this guy, it needs to happen.

Game: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate
Character: Argosy Captain

This one started of as a joke between me and Sacchan but quickly grew to be a real candidate on my cosplay list. I just love this trade captain in MH3U who keeps mixing Japanese words into his sentences and he's just really funny! I also of course like his design and he wouldn't be too hard to do as a first MonHun cosplay, except that the wig will be a challenge and I need to make monobrows to be accurate.... oh shit!

Game: Resident Evil 4
Character: Leon Scott Kennedy

If you had asked me a couple years ago I would probably never consider playing nor cosplaying from a horror game I just don't like anything that might give me nightmares. But then there's my friend Sacchan, who loves survival horror games and is a big fan of Resident Evil and once she brought her PS2 to my place and proceeded to play RE4, from the very beginning, while I watched her play. Turns out I found the game interesting (although I'm still too much of a scaredy cat to play it myself) and ended up liking Leon surprisingly much. Besides, Sacchan want to cosplay some characters from the series anyway so why not join my best friend in the fun? And now I finally get a reason to go to an unsettling, possibly abandoned building after nightfall and have a photoshoot in there...

Game: World of Warcraft
Character: Malfurion Stormrage

Before anyone inserts a pitchfork up my ass I must confess that I've never played WoW (yet) but I've always been drawn to the character designs and I really liked Warcraft: The Beginning. But despite not playing WoW it does have some nostalgic connections with me, mainly because one of my childhood friend's brother played it a lot and that I remember at my first big con I saw some really amazing WoW cosplayers that made me think "oh man, I want to be purple and badass one day too!". Later it turned out that Sacchan had been wanting to cosplay Tyrande Whisperwind for years and she asked me if I wanted to join in as Malfurion. I checked him up and my eyes jumped out of my sockets – OMG, this guy has everything that I've been wanting to create in a cosplay! Wings, huge horns, bodypaint, fur details, a long beard, those famous WoW-eyebrows, huge ears, leatherwork, making a realistic muscle suit etc. This will be one hell of a challenge but I'm gonna do it!

Game: Touken Ranbu
Character: Taroutachi

I think most people know by now that I'm a fan of sword boys. I have already cosplayed a few characters from this online web browser game but there's so many more that I still want to do – and Taroutachi is one of them. He's actually one of my dream cosplays from Touken Ranbu and one of the very first ones I decided that I definitely want to cosplay one day. His design just speaks volumes to me and I can't wait to make a huge-ass sword!

Game: Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Character: Oscar

Ah, good old Nintendo Gamecube age. I'm still there. Path of Radiance is, so far, the only Fire Emblem game that I've played but I really like it even though it's really frustrating at times. Oscar is one of my favorite characters in the game and I want to cosplay him someday when I'm good enough at armormaking and when... I can get to borrow a horse from somewhere. :D No but really, he's a cavalry knight in the game so yeah, it would be really awesome if I ever got the chance to photoshoot with a real "oat motorcycle", as my father always said. *dreaming*

Game: Umikaze
Character: Kantai Collection

What is this, a female character on my list? Yes, you saw right. Although I'm not into crossplay I will do an exception for KanColle ship girls because yeah, I have a big interest in ships and history etc and hey, why not do something different every once in a blue moon? I really like the color scheme of Umikaze and I thought that "why not? :D". It would be a challenge in itself and way out of my comfort zone. I'm still not 100% sure if I want to do an actual crossplay or a genderbend but I think I'm leaning a bit more towards doing Umikaze as she is because it just makes more sense to not genderbend her since ships have always been referred to as feminine.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

...
I would have a couple more characters to list but I think I'll save those for a third reveal so stay tuned for that. ^^ Thanks for your time and I'm looking forward to hear if any of these characters caught your interest! I'm often up for pair and group cosplays if it's possible to arrange, the more the merrier ~

Bye bye!

Lens review: I.Fairy Venus Red

Whooosh ~

Today I will review a beautiful red circle lens called I.Fairy Venus Red. These lenses have a gorgeous and detailed whirly print that looks Victorian-esque and mystical. It's a really pretty lens, in my opinion. ^_^

Let's go!

Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 16.2 mm
Water content: 55%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)

This is a really big lens with a detailed intricate swirly print that is reminiscent of the Victorian period. It's one of my favorite circle lens designs and it goes really well for any darker fashion styles – think goths, Visual Kei etc. ^^ The lens itself is a bit darker in tone and the red color, although an unnatural color in itself, isn't actually overwhelming; I think the black swirls soften the impact of the red. The I.Fairy Venus series have a really noticeable thick limbal ring and even though it's not a solid black it still gives a big impact – in the case of these red lenses the limbal ring is a darker red, mixed with black details.

One lens in. Notice the enlargement.
These cover my real eye color well enough and blends surprisingly naturally at the center, meaning that my light blue-gray eyes don't clash horribly with the red. The red shade is pleasant and actually doesn't appear as freaky or unnatural as one might expect from a red lens. Of course it's still not natural-looking enough to pass as a daily lens but it's definitely a fun pair for alternative fashion fans and those who like to stand out.

The comfort is below average. I had some trouble with the right lens because it kept feeling scratchy even after reinserting it a couple times. These lenses made my eyes tear up and I kept crying for at around 10 minutes before my eyes got used to these lenses not so good. :| My eyes were really watery. I can wear them for around 3 hours before I start to feel the first signs of dryness. My estimate is that I could wear these anywhere around 2-4 hours, possibly 5 hours if I used eyedrops.

Lens photos below!
All photos taken by me during a December afternoon with a semi-clear sky and a setting sun very low in the horizon. We have polar night right now and it means that the sun rises really late and goes down early, hence the orange light. There's no color filters or such on the close-up photos and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.

Apartment room light. Lamps on.
Bathroom light.
Facing a window in the corridor. (not sun side)
Yellow light in the staircase.
Facing a window in the staircase. (sun side)
Outdoors, back against sun. Cloudy.
Outdoors, facing sun. Cloudy.
Outdoors, back against setting sun.
Outdoors, facing sunset. (sun is really low in the horizon)
What can I say? It's a gorgeous lens that's hindered by it's below average comfort but, then again, I do have sensitive eyes and I opened these late (meaning a couple months before they would have expired in their vials) so my comfort grade might not be accurate.
The I.Fairy Venus Red could work for cosplay but I mostly see it as an extra-ordinary fashion lens for those who want to make a statement. The design is unique and it's a fun lens to wear! The red shows up well and still something keeps it from being like those obnoxiously bright red crazy lenses, which could be a good thing if you want a more sophisticated red color. :) So yeah, it's an eye-catching lens that still, somehow, manages to not be too flashy, haha.

Check out these reviews: Brown

Short summary:

Color: 7/10
A slightly darker and toned-down red shade. It's not really vivid enough to jump at you.
Design: 10/10
Beautifully detailed Victorian-esque whirly print. Mystical and mesmerizing.
Opacity: 8/10
Good coverage on light eyes.
Enlargement: 9/10
Big as always.
Comfort: 4/10
These make my eyes really watery after insertion (lasts approx. 10 min) and occasionally feel a bit scratchy. I can wear them for around 3 hours before they start to show the first signs of dryness.
Naturalness: 3/10
Mmmmm... njeh.

Hello people!

Some of you might remember that originally this 5-year birthday giveaway was supposed to last a bit longer (until 5th January) but some things came in the way and changed my original plans and I thus decided to change the end date to 25th December instead, which was yesterday. Thank you for your understanding ~

Now let's get to the results!
I just want to clarify first how the winner was chosen. I used a random number generator online to determine the winner. The first number that I got on the generator was the winning one and I matched it up with who posted the comment of the same number on the giveaway entry post.

Year of Cosplay 2016

Good evening everyone!

Once again we're standing where this year ends and the next one begins. Every new year I feel like time rolls by quicker than the last one and I guess soon enough I'll be that grumpy old man wondering where my youth went, lol! Oh well, before I get stuck in an age crisis and overthink things I want to get this post started, boyah!

As is tradition in this blog, I'll start by listing all the conventions that I attended during 2016:

Närcon Vinter - Linköping, Sweden
Cosvision - Hämeenlinna, Finland
Kummacon - Oulu, Finland
Närcon - Linköping, Sweden
Oulun Animeseminaari - Oulu, Finland
Kitacon - Kemi, Finland
Skecon - Skellefteå, Sweden

Yep, that's 7 conventions and thus exactly the same amount as on the previous year. From these 3 cons, possibly 4 (in "north standards"), can be considered local events. Lately I just haven't prioritized attending as many cons as possible and, besides, my economical situation doesn't really afford it anyway. Also, it might just be me getting older but I'm not as excited about attending cons as I used to be back when I started – it feels like I've already seen it and want something new and refreshing. :/ I guess it's time to look into cons abroad to get that convention flame to ignite again... who's with me?

I also feel bad about how little I've cosplayed this year and yeah, it totally shows because I barely have any new photoshoot pictures or new costumes for this past year. I'm kinda stuck in a cosplay rut and have been so for a while; it doesn't help either that I just simply don't have enough space, nor money, to make anything new, inspiring and challenging – hence why I've mostly been either recycling old costumes or making simpler new ones for the past couple years. I'm disappointed in myself but I can't affect my current situation right now; everybody knows what it's like to be a poor student with no job.
When it comes to actually cosplaying at conventions I've lately often been hit by a case of "can't be bothered" or "too anxious" once I'm at the con, which makes me end up just going casual instead. I wish I wouldn't feel this way because I still love cosplaying but, err, some demons in my head are (still) eating away at me and I can't control them as well as I'd like to. I do wish that things will get better soon and that I'll regain my self-confidence.

Honestly, I tried to do some kind of yearly compilation photo of the cosplays that I've worn over the year and... it pooped. I just don't have any good enough photos to showcase because yeah, most are of the "proof that I'm wearing a costume at the con" sort à la selfie. ^^"

Here's a little list of what I wore at the cons I attended this year:

Närcon Vinter: I recycled Battousai version Kenshin Himura (Rurouni Kenshin) on Friday and on Saturday I debuted Kashuu Kiyomitsu's uchiban outfit from the popular Touken Ranbu. Kashuu was not 100% done because I was missing the earrings but I didn't let that stop me because it's such a small detail.
Cosvision: Debuted my Darkrai gijinka from Pokémon on Saturday. This one I even managed to photoshoot and I'm pleased with the outcome. On Sunday I was supposed to cosplay Hatori Sohma (Fruits Basket) but on the morning I felt ill and passed on it.
Kummacon: I only went there on a quick visit on the late hours of Friday and thus didn't cosplay.
Närcon: On Thursday I didn't cosplay. On Friday I debuted my Lugia gijinka (Pokémon) and I'm totally not happy with it because it was a rushed closet cosplay and I didn't have time to make the accessories for it that I wanted. I don't think anyone recognized what I was supposed to be, lol. I didn't wear Lugia for long and spent most of the day out of cosplay. On Saturday afternoon I reused Ibuki from Hakuouki Reimeiroku and during the late hours I changed cosplay into Greece from Hetalia.
Oulun Animeseminaari: No cosplay.
Kitacon: I finally debuted Hatori Sohma. Went to change into cosplay somewhere during the afternoon.
Skecon: I didn't cosplay on neither Friday nor Sunday because I was working at the convention. On Saturday evening/night I did reuse Kashuu's uchiban version, still missing the earrings though.

My favorite conventions for the year would be Närcon and Närcon Vinter, followed by Skecon. Both Närcons were a lot of fun because I went there in good company and just genuinely had a blast and enjoyed the atmosphere of a big convention. Skecon was another working experience for me and also a great last con to end the year with my best friends; it's such a comfy small con that I keep revisiting every year! Cosvision though was a huuuuuuge disappointment and not worth the money; it's a shame because the first one was so good and promising and then, err, what the fuck happened? -.- It was a mess and I just... can't.

~~~
I don't have so much more to add. This year has been rather... unimpressive and lackluster. I have started work on some cooler cosplays and some others have been finished, but not debuted yet, so it's not a total failure of a year. Of course I've also had a lot of quality time with my cosplay friends but the cosplay front has been so dry that I'm ashamed. *sob* I hope that next year will remedy this and that I get to create some really cool stuff! Keeping my thumbs and toes up!
Lastly, let me thank all my friends and everyone else follows this blog of mine I hope you all will continue to stay around!
Bye bye & Happy New Year 2017!
