What's up geeks? :D

I've decided to start on my next big cosplay project! *badum tsssh*
I don't have a set deadline yet for when I want to be finished with this costume but I'm currently aiming for summer 2017. I'm not making any promises regarding the debut con etc but I can say for sure that this cosplay is part of a cosplay group with friends!

The character I will be doing is Invoker from Dota 2.
*drum roll*

I'm pretty sure no one saw this coming and, honestly, if someone had asked me about Invoker half a year ago I'd been like "who's that?". xD I decided to do him on a whim after Närcon Vinter when me, Hitsu and Sacchan were talking about Dota 2 at Hitsu's place. I actually haven't even played the game myself but because Hitsu is a big fan of it I've seen her play and talk about it. I've always had an interest in this kind of games anyway, but because my internet is shit (and my computer is dying) I can't play it comfortably. :/ So yeah, Hitsu mentioned that she had planned to cosplay from Dota 2 and asked if I was interested; I had been wanting to do a pair cosplay with her for years since we're really close friends since school times and we have supported each other a lot during tough times etc. I thought that because she loves Dota 2 then I could join her in the fun and hey, why the hell not? :D I had no clue about the characters though, so I ended up asking Hitsu for suggestions. She first suggested Juggernaut (because of the samurai inspiration) but I didn't really like the design. :/ She then told me that she knew a character that I might like and so she showed me the Invoker and, well, I was game on! x)
I don't say no to a fancy badass magician who gives me a reason to do an awesome cape and gain a fair amount of new learning experiences! Besides, his color scheme really speaks to me and I get more use for my elf ears and –maybe best of all– I already happen to have perfect contact lenses for him! I've always wanted to do at least one wizard cosplay – now I got one! o/

I started working on Invoker on 18th February 2016. I have sewing class in school and one of my teachers is awesome; she can draw patterns by free hand if I just show her what I want to make. >w< So yeah, I had totally saved some reference photos on my cellphone and showed them to her and then I spent some time sketching the different clothing pieces on paper, to give her an idea of what they looked like when separated.

My sketch paper with the measures scribbled
on it by le teacher. (psst, I know that the vest is inaccurate)
My teacher started taking some measures and I gave my opinions on how long this and that piece should be, the shape of the sleeves and so on. Some of the body measures are inaccurate because she took them over my clothes and yeah, because it's winter I am wearing multiple layers and so suddenly my ass is 10+ cm wider than it actually is, lol. *coughsomanypantscough*
We got almost all the patterns drawn and cut out on the first day, here it starts!

I went to fetch some fabric from mom's attic on the following weekend and I ended up picking out a fabric I thought I'd never touch for cosplay purposes, even if I had a 10-feet pole and rubber gloves – are you prepared to hear it? *silence intensifies* .............................................. SATIN.
Yes, that shiny fabric that all cringeworthy cheap online costumes are made out of! :'D But before you decide to mentally roast me, fork me and throw my remains into a fucking sharknado I want to justify myself – not all satins look horrendous to the point you want to gouge your eyes out. You see, mom had a roll of this beautiful plumish violet quality satin fabric that actually looks good. Yeah, say it with me – satin that looks good. Can you believe it??

I decided to use the satin fabric for the jacket or undercoat or whatever you want to call it, of which basically the sleeves and the "tails" are visible. I honestly didn't want to go buy 4 meters of fabric when I could get 4 meters of satin fabric for free and hey, I've seen another Invoker cosplayer online who used shiny fabric for the jacket thingy too and guess what? It looked amazeballs!
So yeah, I thought why not and besides, I don't think it's that off because Invoker is a badass magician and I often imagine magicians with shiny precious-looking robes...

Some of the fabrics etc needed for Invoker.
Next time I had sewing class was on 1st March and I brought with me the satin fabric to school because we had prepared all the patterns for it. It turned out that our original idea wouldn't work because we had planned to do the jacket in two parts and thus of two different fabrics and it required that the top would stretch and/or have a zipper. We scratched that idea altogether and decided on a different approach, just so that we wouldn't have to redo most of the patterns. So yeah, what we did was that we decided on splitting the jacket so that the top part of the jacket would stay the same (with the sleeves), except that we would widen it enough so that I could fit it over my head, but the lower part would be the skirt thingy instead of the jacket "tails". This means that the jacket bottom, aka "tails", together with the white front flap thing and the triangular back cape would be a separate piece that attaches directly to the waist. I'm sorry if my explanations make no sense. XD

To check the fit of the widened top part of the jacket pattern, that was the now-to-be-jacket-with-skirt hybrid, I did a quick prototype of a test fabric. It fit well and so I used the prototype as a pattern when I started cutting out all the parts that were to be made of the satin fabric. Hhhhhh.

Cellphone photo of fabric cutting (yellow is the prototype).
The colors are raped, lol.
The prototype jacket top was really short and it was originally made short so that the "tails" would split very high up on my waist to give the right look when worn. But yeah, because the top was now to be attached with the skirt and not the "tails" I could afford to lengthen the top. No need to be croptop!Invoker. xD

During that class we cut out all the pieces needed out of the satin fabric. For next class on 3rd March I brought with me the whole bolt (yay mom's fabrics!) of a really dark purple fabric that I had planned to use for Invoker's skirt thingy. I ended up needing to take the fabric width 3 times to get enough fabric for the deep folds of the skirt – that's a lot of fabric!

School's serger. Always hella convenient!
I had time to go through all the cut out pieces so far with the serger and OH LORD I'VE FOUND MY NEW NEMESIS WHEN IT COMES TO SERGING – IT'S CALLED DOING CURVES!! ( >д<) It's 99% impossible to do some curves and sharp angles and having the serger actually catching and sealing the edges without the automatic cutter (that moves when you sew, in case someone is not familiar with sergers) taking a big bite from places where you really don't want it to cut. Even my teacher (who's a sewing artesan) said it's impossible to do some curves so yeah, there seemingly is no magic trick that I simply have not been told about...

I sewed the shoulder seams and the side seams closed on the top and later on I went to fetch some white cotton twill from Eurokangas for the bolero, aka the sleeveless vest thingy. I know that at mom's there is a perfect golden fabric that I could make the golden details out of (it doesn't even fray!) and I plan to go fetch it this coming weekend. At mom's there should also be a big roll of white fake leather which I'm planning to use for the cape, since I most likely will want it to be rigid and actually not fold like a normal cape. The reason for this is that in the game his cape stands up on its own and the full design of it is always visible. It should look like some really extravaganza fancy cape with its own will, lol. Fuck gravity!

Invoker reference.
I'm not yet sure what I'll make those shoulder armors out of but it's either gonna be the same leather as for the cape (assuming it's suitable, I haven't seen it in person yet) or worbla. I'm honestly a bit intimidated by making it out of worbla because I'm still really new and inexperienced with it and yeah, Invoker's armor would need quite some thinking and skills to get to look nice...

I have most of the fabrics ready or at least planned out. I only need to find something for the gloves (the black parts), the front flap and the white-ish waist & butt skirt thingy. I honestly have no idea what to call it. xD I also need to fetch buttons for the vest but that shouldn't be a problem seeing what a shitload mom has in a box, lol. I might need some fabric for the boots though, if I decide on making them crazy long, as they seem to be on the very first Invoker picture I posted.

Invoker reference without cape, shoulder armor and arm bracers. (and hair, lol)
I'm thinking about doing the golden chest armor out of worbla, golden leather (if I can find any) or polystyrene sheets, I haven't decided yet. Those decorations on the front flap I'm not sure about since I have no idea whatsoever if worbla sticks to fabric. Anyone know?
I'm planning on making the arm bracers out of worbla or gold-colored leather as well.

So yeah, I have many things planned out for Invoker but luckily this isn't a cosplay project that needs to be finished anytime soon; it's a more long-term one so I'll have plenty of time to take it slowly and think along the way. It feels good to not have a definite deadline that is all or nothing, hah.

That's all for this time. Stay tuned for the second part!

Black Bullet Rentarou Satomi's gun

Hello cosplayers!

As some of you might remember I've mentioned cosplaying Rentarou Satomi from Black Bullet for a while ago. The thing is that I actually already have the whole outfit completed and my original plans was to debut him already last summer but yeah, I chose not to debut him back then because I was missing the gun. The gun is such an important part that I didn't feel okay going without it and well, I'm horrible at coming up with poses to do without a prop anyway. xD And besides, the series is not called Black Bullet for no reason – aka going without his trusty weapon felt pretty much the same as going without pants, lol.

Rentarou reference.
Rentarou Satomi uses a Springfield Armory XD as his primary gun and in the series he says that it's just "a normal gun". Well, it might not be completely normal in the series either but I tell you that it's a fucking nightmare to find one for cosplay purposes!! I've spent over half a year, on and off, searching for something suitable and oh lord is it stupidly hard to come by. I've plowed through eBay multiple times with no results, I've checked all airsoft online shops that I know of (within Europe) and I've even checked toy stores for toy guns both online and in real life.

My original plan was to buy an airsoft replica of a close-enough gun, but the more I thought about it the more I didn't feel like spending 1500 SEK on a prop, for a cosplay that I likely won't use all that much just not worth it. It would have been different if I had been an airsoft player too but sadly I'm not, although I do have an interest in trying it at least. Oh and for those curious the guns I were eyeing for Rentarou were either this one or this; I know that they are not 100% accurate but they were the closest I could find. (note: Swedish store. Those were the only Springfield Armory guns they carried)

Rentarou's gun reference.
After deciding that even though an airsoft replica would have been the most ideal choice it was by far out of what I was willing to pay for a single prop. My next choice was to check for a similar toy gun online and oh lord I won't even tell how many online stores I went through without finding anything even remotely similar; at some point I thought that it would be okay if I could at least find a damn glock but even that was seemingly too much to ask for. I don't know what's up with the miniscule amount of toy guns (you pretty much only find revolvers, cowboy guns and some smaller-than-real-deal pistols or shot guns, if lucky) currently on the market but I guess it has something to do with the heated debates about if it's morally right for children to play with toy guns. I do have my opinions about that but I won't open up my wordy chest about it here because that's not the purpose of this post and yeah, I could easily do a whole blog post about it. xD
Feel free to skip until the next block of text but yeah, for those really curious I can say that I support kids playing with toy guns and that's mainly because I see nothing wrong with it – kids don't think about death etc the same way adults do. I remember as a kid I'd play war with my best childhood friend during school breaks and we made pretend guns with our fingers and yeah, when we shot each other we just pretended to fall down, counted to 10 and then we could continue playing again. It was never violent or unfair in any way, just fun and a way to up our reaction speeds and imagination. So yeah, even though I played that kind of games as a kid I grew up to be a normal adult who knows what's wrong and right. Playing with toy guns doesn't make you a murderer or whatever and especially not if you otherwise had a good upbringing; I'm sure parenting and environment plays a bigger role than what toys you had when young. That's all for this quickie opinion. :)

Because I couldn't find any toy guns neither online or in physical toy stores I gave up on finding a gun for a while and just put this costume on ice. I even tried to find some damaged second-hand or otherwise non-functional airsoft guns on auction sites that I could use because yeah, I just needed it for looks and not for use; I found some reparation project guns but none had the general shape I was looking for.
I even tried to look for those brightly colored plastic practice guns but yeah, couldn't find those either on eBay in the right models...

Anime screenshot of Rentarou pointing his gun.
I've noticed that Rentarou's gun isn't consistent in the anime either so yeah, at some point I just decided "screw perfect accuracy" and decided on just finding whatever fake gun that I could that was as cheap as possible and that I could modify to fit, if necessary. I thought that most people would probably not even pay as much attention to it than I would – as long as I had a damn gun that would be better than none at all, lol. What you mean I got sick of hours upon hours of fruitless searches? :DD

I also checked online for an actual character prop gun for cosplay purposes but the only store that showed up seemed so fishy and the photos looked stolen anyway so yeah, I wasn't too keen on buying from them. Finding cosplay props for that masked guy from Black Bullet was easy but for some reason finding a gun for Rentarou, who's the goddamn main character, is impossible. What the heck?? ლ( `Д’ ლ)

Okay so, it was pretty clear that a toy gun would be the cheapest and still easiest to find. I had plowed through all local toy shops and even checked the multiple second-hand stores several times (that's where I got lucky for my last gun project!). I was annoyed because I found toy guns that would have been suitable if only they had been in the right scale. All good ones were always smaller than their true size!! (I guess so that it would be even more obvious that they were toys)

Official artwork.
I suddenly remembered that those annual outdoor markets in my town used to have toy sellers that carried a nice variety of toy guns! Luckily this came to my mind just a few weeks before one of the markets came to town and so, of course, I headed there with my bro, Frozen Angel. It was on 10th March and the market stands were all closing so only 3 of them were still open when we arrived – but much to my joy two of the still open ones were indeed the toy sellers! I instantly saw that they had an interesting sortiment of toy guns for rather affordable prices. I stood there for probably close to 10 minutes wondering which pistol I should take and when the Finnish guy, who was the seller, came and asked me what I was looking for I even said that I needed a toy gun to finish my costume. He was a really funny guy who joked around and seemed to really like selling toys; he gave me some recommendations and I walked home with a 6 € cheapo police gun set.

I know it's not super accurate or anything but yeah, fuck that. :) The size was good, it was the most square-ish pistol the seller had and it was the cheapest too. I also noticed that the "secret mission" text was thankfully just a sticker so I could easily peel it off and have an anonymous toy gun, lol. The other ones all had the name of the gun type molded into the plastic itself so yeah, no easy way to get rid of it.
I obviously had no use for the police badge nor the rubber ammunitions (although they were hella nostalgic) so when I noticed that the gun didn't actually even work, aka shoot off the ammos, I wasn't even disappointed lol. I planned to modify it unusable anyway, just to be on the safe side because yeah, you never know with con rules.

The first thing I did once the gun was out of the package was that I peeled off the sticker, no problemas! After that I shortened the pipe; there surely would have been easier and neater ways to do it but I went ghetto savage and just cut it off with a motherfucking ordinary food knife, ou yeah!

It works but it takes some patience. xD I proceeded to sand the rough edges with 120 grit sand paper, it worked just fine and the shortened pipe was quickly nice again.
I want to mention though that please don't be rough when cutting off the pipe; I accidentally was and noticed afterwards that the plastic next to the gun's mouth had cracked at the seams. It might not be that much of a big deal since it's easy to just glue in place but yeah, it might still ruin your prop. The plastic is thin and because it's hollow inside it doesn't have much support so yeah, if you hold it down too roughly when cutting then it will crack, sooner or later.

Just showing the crack.
Next up I figured that I'd need to open the whole thing to get rid of that protruding launcher thing in the back I really didn't want it there because it was ugly and inaccurate as fuck. But much to my annoyment I realized that the only screw driver I had was way too big to even fit into the tiny holes so yeah, off we go to visit mom and stepdad and borrow some of his tools. It's so convenient because he pretty much has all the tools I'll ever need for my cosplay prop projects, lololol.
I got to borrow a set of mini-size screw drivers and on the same go I picked up the hot glue gun too. When I got home I screwed up all the tiny little screws and opened up the whole shebang.

Opened toy gun. All parts still intact.
It's... very empty inside. Then again, that's pretty much what I expected.
I first took out the pipe part and then I noticed that I had to break the launcher's triangular tip to get off the trigger from the rod; it took some violence and a knife but I managed to get it off. I removed the spring and the transparent rubbery presser thingy (not visible above) next which, by the way, had some yucky grease on it. Some of the same grease was on the rod too. I guess that's what you should expect when it's a really cheap China-produced toy...

The parts, which are mentioned above, removed.
Even after removing the triangular tip the rod still protruded from the back of the gun so yeah, I just decided to scrap it all together. Luckily the trigger didn't need the rod to stay in place; there was a hole for it where it was locked in place once both halves of the gun were on. I noticed that, once the rod was gone, the trigger lost all its tension and just rattled around when I shaked the gun (when re-assembled). I thought that I could just as well set it in place so I took the hot glue gun and filled the hole with glue and pressed the trigger's matching hole into the hole on the gun's body and waited for it to dry. So many holes. The trigger stuck nicely and now it won't move anymore, which is for the better because no silly rattling sounds anymore and now even the con security guys will be able to try it, if they are suspicious, and notice that you can't even press down the trigger, hah!

Rod completely removed and the trigger glued in place.
Next up I painted the pipe black. I thought it would be easier to paint it before I screw the whole thing closed again. I used some black gloss spray paint that works on many kinds of surfaces.

Painted pipe. I used the rod as a holder, yay usefulness!
After the pipe had dried I put it back in place and then I re-assembled and closed the gun. After that I took my hot glue gun and filled in the screw holes they bothered me. With the holes filled I just painted the whole thing with the same black glossy spray paint and left it to dry. Once it was dry I finished it off on the next day with a coating of gloss varnish. I left it to dry one last time.

I hung it to dry in the shower by some rope.
Finished modified toy gun. (ignore my hand, it looks retarded)
Now my gun is done! It's not all that accurate (wrong model and all) but oh well, it's not the end of the world; as long as I have a damn prop it's fine and hey, it was cheap! :'D I could of course have built on top of it to change the shape but honestly, I'm lazy and don't want to waste my worbla on this lol. I'd rather save it for some cosplays I'm more likely to wear a lot and for a long time. *coughmonsterhunterarmorscough*

But yeah, maybe one day I'll improve it into a more accurate one, if I ever happen to come by an inexpensive Springfield Armory airsoft gun, that is. One can always dream...

Thanks for reading! See you!

Hotaru's sword from Samurai Deeper Kyo!

Hi there everyone!

For a long time now I've wanted to cosplay Hotaru from Samurai Deeper Kyo and, as you may know, I've already got most of the cosplay done, yay! :D I think SDK is a pretty underrated series and even though I read it more than three years ago it's still one of my favorite shounen manga and the urge to cosplay from it hasn't withered away, which just further shows that I really enjoyed SDK and it left an impact on me. Some of my cosplay impulses come directly after I've finished a series but then they just die out in a couple months at best – but with SDK even after all these years I'm still super eager to finally get to start working on a cosplay from it! I just really enjoyed the story, all the characters, the art style...

This is the only official colored manga artwork that
I found that shows Hotaru's sword completely.
On 3rd September 2015 I started the making of the sword notice how long ago it is! I wrote on this post every time I did some progress during my "woodwork" class (aka 'redesign' and 'furniture renovation') in school, which I had approximately once per week, except during school breaks/vacations or when I was sick. Note: this is gonna be a rather lengthy post.

I was in my woodwork class in school and when I had to think up a project that I wanted to do Hotaru's sword quickly came into my mind. I saved some references on my cellphone, fetched a suitable plank from what school happened to have available, drafted the sword's shape onto the wood by using one of my unfinished other katana swords *coughmasamunecough* as a base. I left the sawing for next time as I didn't find the kind of saw in school that I had gotten used to and wanted to use; I went to borrow one from my stepdad on the Saturday that followed.

Back in class I cut out the sword from the plank; it didn't go quite as neatly as I had hoped. I hadn't used said saw in a couple years so I had forgotten how it was to use one of these. I didn't make any horrible mistakes but things just didn't end up as straight as I ideally would have wanted. I cut so gay!
I took a file and started filing down the dagger end of the sword first. My arms were hurting so much after I was done sanding and filing for the day, hallelujah.
The next time I sanded and filed some more on the dagger and then I did the main blade part. Before I left class I put some filler putty on areas that had holes or cracks in them.

I apologize for the crummy cellphone-quality on some of the photos ahead; I didn't have my SLR camera with me in school during this project.

After I had started sanding the "dagger" side and put filler
on all the spots that needed it.
The next time I came to class I had a short panic moment – things had been moved to new places and I couldn't find my sword anywhere! For a moment I thought that someone might have thought that it was just a scrap plank and trashed it. D: Luckily I found it lying on the "coffee break table", lol.
I started by sanding the filler putty smooth, wham! I then took a piece of plywood from the scrap pieces box. I drew the circular tsuba on it and two pieces the same size of the handle; I wanted to thicken the handle so that it wouldn't be the same thickness as the blades. I also wanted to thicken it for a better and more comfortable grip.
I sawed out the plywood pieces and glued one side of the handle pieces to the, well, handle. OH LORD THE SCHOOL'S GLUE BOTTLE. It's so stuck that I had to use all my force to squeeze minimal amounts out of it
– it was horrible lol. Took forever. ._. I swear it felt like over half of the glue had hardened inside the bottle...
Oh well, 10 minutes of glue squeezing later (and a red face and hurting hands) I had glued one side in place and put pressure clamps on.

Glue added and pressure clamps on. Notice the tsuba on the table.
Next up I put some filler putty on the tsuba too; it had gotten a fair amount of "cracks" (aka the top layer of the plywood had peeled off while sawing) and I accidentally got a dent on the edge that had to be filled in too. I put plenty of putty on it and put it on a clamp to dry as well.

Tsuba put to dry after adding filler.
Next time I came to class I was horrified – everything had been moved again and a loooot of stuff was gone. I saw that my sword was lying on the table where I had left it but the tsuba and the other handle add-on piece were missing. My first instinct was to dig in the cardboard box on the table and in it I found a lot of sand paper and my handle piece. Thank God. I guess it helped that I had written my name on it before I left last time, otherwise someone might have thought that it was a random scrap piece... Now I just had to find the tsuba. I remembered that I had left it to dry on the clamp but when I cast a look at the clamp I noticed that it was open and nothing was in it. I went and asked the teacher if he had seen it and he thought that someone might have thought it was just a trash piece and thrown it away. We both started digging in the big box on the floor that was filled with scrap pieces of wood; we dug in it for several minutes before giving up.
I looked around everywhere possible and didn't see a trace of the tsubaTHE HORROR STRUCK ME. What is someone really had thought that it was just a random trash piece that no one used? D:
I went to ask this one older guy, who seems to be a "helper" but not an actual teacher. I got it implied that he was the one who had been moving stuff around and yeah, I described what my missing piece looked like to him. He looked at me for a few seconds and then his face did this kind of I-just-had-a-revelation-and-now-I-feel-guilty expression, as if he remembered seeing my tsuba and putting it in the most horrible of places. Yeah, probably there.

Guessed it?
Yep, dumpster diving time.

The trash hadn't been taken out and so we still had the hopes on our side or that's what he said. We probably spent like 10 minutes digging through all the trash bags before I finally hear a voice shout "hey you, boy, I found it!" and I look behind me and see this guy holding up my tsuba with a satisfied grin on his face and a trash can next to him. I thank him, he pulls some jokes and I go and sand down the filler areas with sand paper. After that I fetched the drill and made several holes in the middle; the rest of the class I spent carving, filing and sanding the tsuba hole so that I could thread it all the way down the blade, into place.

Tsuba with the hole fixed. I added some more putty to even out
some pressure marks from the clamp as well as cracks that appeared
while making the hole itself.
Oh, and I also sanded down the excess dried glue, on the handle, that had spread past its intended place. I then glued the second plywood piece on. It's not a problem to sand down dried glue with sandpaper!

This shows the glue spill from the first add-on handle piece before I sanded it down.
When both handle pieces were glued on and dry I took a file and started filing the corners of the handle, so that it would be more rounded and thus provide a more comfortable grip. I sanded them smooth after the rough file work.

Handle rounded (it barely shows on this photo) and testing tsuba fit.
After this I went home to buy the termoplastic holy grail of all cosplay prop makers – Worbla's Finest Art! Yes, now the time had finally come for me to try out this material that everyone has been gushing about for years! *u* It feels so good to finally get some studying money so that I can afford ordering Worbla from Germany...

Back at class I put gesso on the tsuba because I wanted to give it some extra base coatings; the rest was to be primed after I had done the worbla parts. So yeah, time to try out worbla for the first time ever! I must admit that I felt all kinds of "holy shit I hope this won't be hard" and a case of kuumotusta but yeah, once I had measured, drafted and cut out the pieces I needed I just turned on the power of my heat gun (borrowing from stepdad is da best!) and prayed to the cosplay gods that I wouldn't commit some disastrous nooblord maximus.

Worbla pieces added – success!
Thankfully this was a very simple and newbie-friendly first project for learning how to use worbla. I only had to wrap some approximately 2 cm wide strips around and blend in the seams. I didn't do any screw-ups and I'm quite satisfied with the results for being a first-time. :) After this first experience I already figured out a lot of how worbla works and now I'm even more excited to do some bigger projects!
Oh, and to blend in the seam/overlap so that it "disappeared" I thought for a while what to use and so I went to dig around the garage... and I found this little tool that proved to be mighty useful:

much clean. such wow.
It's for school use though, so what did you expect?
I used this metallic spatula thingy to make the seams (aka where the worbla overlaps with itself) flat, move and push the edges, flatten it out etc. It worked wonders!
Next I thought about ways to smoothen the worbla out; not like I mind the texture that much but I wanted to try to at least make it a little bit less noticeable. I took some really fine grit sand paper and sanded it carefully although I'm not sure if it actually made a difference...? Oh well.

Worbla gets a bit paler by sanding...?
Next up I went to buy some spray primer because heck yeah, why not? I would have preferred white but the store only had gray so that had to do. My school has discount prices to this one store so I get things a bit cheaper if I buy from there so, eh, who cares about the color in the end since it's just a primer? :DD I regret not knowing about the discount earlier because I bought paints from this store already last year...

Primer in a spray can!
I started painting my sword and, err, of course I'm not patient enough to do like a billion thin coats so I sprayed on a closer distance than recommended to get better coverage quicker. Am I the only one doing this all the time? I really shouldn't do this crap. Well, if anything I noticed that the excess paint was very easy to spread out with your fingers and it didn't leave any signs of where it had been before. Flawless blending, frick yeah! o/
I didn't get to finish priming though because out of nowhere I saw that a spot that had been just nice before now had the wooden grain sticking up. I just took the grain and ripped it off, added some filler putty and left it to dry. Damn you derp wood for prolonging this project now, why didn't you show yourself earlier? ._.
Oh, and guess what? The next day, when I had fixed that grain issue and continued spray priming, well, more surface derps showed themselves and I entered "fuck this shit"-mode and put filler all over the damn thing! I was really sick of having to constantly backtrack and delay my progress because uneven surfaces galore yeah, it happened many times during this project but I just didn't bother to mention it each and every time. It's annoying how much more noticeable those fuckers get once a coat of paint goes on; really sticks out like a sore thumb.

Filler added all over the place and put to dry. Priming incomplete.
(notice my mad balancing skills!)
So yeah, once more I had to pause the priming to put some filler putty to cover unneven/faulty areas. But because I put filler on both sides of the sword (except on the handle) at the same time I had to put it to dry in a way so that neither side was touching anything. This made me position the handle on a tip of a table and then put wooden blocks on it, to act as weights, so that the center of balance would change and fit my needs.
The next time I came to class the filler had of course dried so now I just had to sand it down. I was super careful to make sure that the filler blended into the wood so that it wouldn't be obvious, once the paint was on, where the filled in spots started and ended. But even though I triple-checked and everything there was still two small areas that I had missed when I once again resumed the priming work. Oh and guess what? I've almost used up the whole spray can just for this sword alone, goddammit! xD But yeah, those two misses were minor enough that I just drowned them in some extra coatings and then it was pretty okay, lol. I got lazy. I also noticed that putting filler putty on top of worbla (to even out bumps, overlaps etc) is a thing! :D

I had winter break and didn't get to work on my sword for a while. When I finally got back to school I had to go and buy some more silver spray paint because I noticed that my trusty can was pretty much empty, boo. Much to my dismay the brand I had been using had been changed and the newer replacement one, that the store now carried, seemed to be of a slightly darker shade. I thought that it couldn't be that different so I went ahead and bought it. Fuck me. :) Okay so, I started painting my sword as per usual, everything looked fine in the dim garage light when the paint had been freshly sprayed on. But guess what? When the paint had dried I noticed that it was way too dark and dull/matte to pass for a blade. FFFFFUUUUU--
Nothing to do than backtrack and go buy paint from another store and yeah, that totally means a store that doesn't give me the school discount price. Fuck my life. :) My other option was to pray that there happened to be any leftover spray paints at mom's from the days when I still lived there and did my early cosplay prop projects...

I found an almost empty can of silver paint at mom's which I took with me to school; I also took with me my own old silver spray paint just in case there was a little left (it sounded empty). All along I was praying that there would be enough spray left to allow me to be able to paint both blades on the sword. I started shaking the cans and first tried my luck with the seemingly-empty-one-from-home and there was enough left to cover one side of the dagger part. Ooooookay.
I stared at disbelief at the other can that I had picked up from mom's it barely felt like it contained much more than the one I had just used up. I pressed the nozzle down and........ nothing happened. It was as if the nozzle was stuck and wouldn't go down. Oh, great. ._.
I went and asked one of the teacher assistant guys and he proceeded to joke about sticking something sharp into the can again, to check if there was spray left, to which I responded "OH NO YOU DON'T" and then we both just laughed. In case someone doesn't know what I'm referring to then go and read about my foam explosion adventure here. x) But yeah, he totally did shove something sharp into the can and luckily nothing exploded this time – just a small burst of spray paint came out. :D But the problem was that the nozzle was still not working and yes, I had tried using all three nozzles from my other spray cans and neither of them worked on just this one can that I needed right now, urrgh.
I went to look around and found a spray can that belonged to someone else so yeah, because I'm a sneaky bastard I stole borrowed its nozzle and ermahglerb it worked! I was about to jump with joy because I could finally get to paint this damn thing!

The blades are painted silver, the rest is untouched since priming.
Much to my surprise the can I brought with me from mom's actually contained enough spray for me to be able to paint both blades completely and even, almost, do two full coatings. So yeah, there was actually enough spray left and I thank the Cosplay Gods™ for that.

I took with me the sword home after the spray painting – now the only thing left to do was to paint the non-blade parts (handle, tsuba, habaki) by hand. But as per usual I had a ridiculously hard time trying to find some red glossy and/or metallic paint that wasn't spray paint! I found this weird really chunky-looking paint called Inka Gold in the color Lava Red (fitting!) in the bookstore shop in town and, even though it felt a bit overpriced, I decided to try it. I couldn't find anything else (unless I bought online but that would mean stupidly high shipping costs) and I noticed that it was a German brand so yeah, I thought that at least it can't be shitty because German stuff tends to be good quality.

Painting preparations done. The plastic spoon's other end
I used as a spatula, if anyone wonders what the heck it was for. :'D
Turns out that the super chunky paint is actually a water based metallic vax paste that you rub on by using either a sponge or a soft cloth! Fancy shit. I tore a piece of fabric from a worn-out bedsheet because I didn't have any sponges and yeah, it worked just fine. I had to use one of my stiff makeup brushes (lol but seriously, I had nothing else that would work) to paint some spots that needed pin-point precision or were impossible to reach with the clumsy crumpled fabric.
Good thing with the vax paint is that it dries really fast and that, because of its thickness, it will easily cover up flaws and uneven spots! The bad thing is that I noticed that, even after it has dried, that if I touched the painted areas the paint would rub off slightly and leave fingerprints. So yeah, now I needed to get something to seal it with too. Great.

Because I didn't have any sealer nor varnish at home I had to go fetch some as well. I first thought about seeing if the bookstore carried the specific varnish for the Inka Gold paints but they didn't so yeah, I had to get something else. I found some all-purpose glossy varnish in another store called Tokmanni (it's a mix-store selling dry foods, sodas, toys, clothes, power tools etc) that I decided to try. I've actually never used varnish before so yeah, I guess it's high time to start eh?

Glossy varnish that I used.
The varnish did the trick, wohoo! o/ Now I only needed to wrap the handle and I can finally call this project complete!
I had bought 1 meter of red fabric bias tape during early March 2016 and, luckily, it was just enough if I wrapped it a certain way. But when I was about to start wrapping the handle, with some help by Sacchan, I noticed that the trusty glue I've had since at least 2012 had dried out. :'( Damn it. So yeah, with no Karlssons klister to save me (that's the name of the glue) I had to go and ask to borrow stepdad's hot glue gun instead – which I got!
Sacchan came and visited again a few days later and we did some teamwork because I needed an extra set of hands for the gluing mission. We basically did it so that I was the one carefully wrapping the bias tape (had to wrap very specifically for it to be long enough) and giving Sacchan directions on where to apply the hot glue, little at a time. So yeah, I was the wrap master and she was the glue master. xD It took us a while to finish but at least it worked out well and nothing went wrong ~

Finished SDK Hotaru sword!
Sorry about the crummy final mirror photo, it doesn't really do it justice. :'c The tsuba and the habaki parts have a metallic shine but it just doesn't want to photograph well, lol. My sword also ends up looking overly neon red on some other test photos that I took after finishing it, ugh. I hope it will behave on cosplay photoshoots and con photos etc; it's not really flattering when it ends up looking way brighter than it actually is...

I can admit though that I'm not completely 100% satisfied with this sword. I did some early parts of it a bit too hastily (sanding and spray painting, mainly) and because of that it's not as neat as most of my other props – it's things that doesn't really show from a distance but I can easily spot them with my naked eye but, then again, I know where to look. *shrugs* Also, because of being impatient or non-observant I several times had to backtrack and add filler or sand something smoother etc; it was really annoying to have to go back and patch up stuff you either lazied out on (because you thought it was ready but it actually wasn't) or somehow missed. It sucks to have to sand down imperfections after you've already primed and started doing the final painting on something because you didn't notice them during the original sanding process... ughrrr. >_>

Thanks for reading! Hotaru wig and makeup tests coming later!

I am so so sooo happy to get to work with this company and I hope you will enjoy this review as much as I enjoyed writing it.O(≧∇≦)O I will be reviewing the popular EOS New Adult Green circle lenses, also sometimes known as Blytheye Green. Let's go ~

Before I start with the actual review of the lenses I want to tell you, all lovely peeps out there, a little about my new sponsor CirclelensesEurope, also known as Cirkellinser. You might wonder why I'm mentioning two stores but the catch is that it's actually the same store, just for two different markets – CirclelensesEurope is for the European market in general while Cirkellinser is catering especially for Sweden. Both sites have the same people behind it, the same products for sale etc so yeah, the only difference is basically that the other one is for the Swedish customers. Neither of them is a copycat or a scam site so no worries there. :)

I want to mention that I found them by chance, aka advertisement on Facebook. My first thought when I took a closer look was "oh wow, a circle lens store in Sweden that sells authentic GEO lenses and more! *_*". I was seriously super excited because I live in Sweden myself and I instantly made the connection in my head that the next time I needed to buy lenses, on a very short notice, I'd know exactly where to go! I'd also know where to refer other Swedes who were iffy with ordering lenses from outside Europe for safety and/or trusting reasons – which is understandable if you are not an avid online shopper or looking to buy your first colored contact lenses etc.

Both or their sites are fresh, inviting and easy to use. There might not be as many circle lenses to choose from as on other more well-known stores but what CirclelensEurope has going for them is that they sell genuine and safe lenses, have cheap shipping (only 3€ for anywhere in Europe!) and, also, that they are based in Europe (likely Sweden because that's where my package came from) and thus have very fast shipping. This is a very good trump card for them –that sets them apart from the myriad of Asia-based lens stores– because CirclelensEurope will be the number one store where your prayers will go if you ever need to buy circle lenses urgently in, say, one weeks notice. *coughcosplayerscough* They will surely save your costume when all other lens shops would require you to use expensive shipping methods to maaaaybe make it on time....

Regarding the shipping and handling time of my experiences I want to say a few words and that's that I was utterly amazed and surprised by how quick and efficient their service was! They honestly told me on 27th February, a Saturday, that they would ship the lenses on the coming week (they actually shipped on Sunday) and I received my package already on 29th Feb, which is the following Monday. Can you believe it?? (๑>ᴗ<๑) Even though it was domestic shipping (aka within Sweden) it's still crazy fast!
I actually asked about their delivery times and they said that shipping to Sweden is 1-2 days and to the rest of Europe it's 3-7 days so yeah, if you ever needed to order circle lenses in a pinch then CirclelensesEurope is here to save you with their racing-fast service! o/ They really prioritize quick handling and speedy shipping and that's amazing! I honestly swear by them; their shipping is faster than a bullet train powered by Super Saiyans!

If you wonder to what European countries (note:they do NOT ship outside of Europe!!) they ship to then this is what it says on their site:
We deliver to following countries: Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom and Austria.
Regarding customer service they seem to always answer within 24 hours, even during weekends. :) Customer service is also really kind and easy to approach while still having that professional air to it. All in all CirclelensesEurope is very easy and smooth to deal with, safe to buy from and I would warmly recommend them to all fellow European (and Swedish) cosplayers and circle lens fans! Go and give them your love and support. ♥ They are amazeballs!

 ~***~ Lens review continues ~***~

The lenses arrived in a small bubblewrap envelope. Lately the post has been rough on my packages and so was the case with this shipment too – there was a tear on the envelope but thankfully nothing had fallen out. When I opened the envelope I was surprised to see that the lenses were inside a small cute drawstring bag! With the order also came a free lens case and a business card with a hand-written thank you note on the back – I felt really appreciated! ;u;

This is what came with the order!
You might notice that the business card has some wear/damage on one side and that's because it happened to be on the spot where the envelope was torn so yeah, normally it wouldn't be like that. ^^; That paper with a lot of text (in Swedish) is a "thanks for ordering" note with information about their guarantees, as well as how to wear circle lenses – a really thoughtful addition to all the first-timers!

~***~

I put the lenses to soak overnight, as is recommended before wearing. On my first wearing of the lenses I noticed that it took my eyes a couple minutes to get used to them and I could feel them in my eyes, which made me rub my eyes to try to get rid of the discomfort, although it was minimal; it's just that I dislike feeling that I have something in my eyes, even if it doesn't hurt. The "lens in my eye" feeling disappeared mostly after some minutes and I didn't have to take them out and put them back in; I do that quite easily if I don't like how the lenses feel as soon as I put them in, in hopes that they'd feel better on the second try.
During my first run with the lenses they felt dry very fast and I managed to wear them for a bit past 3 hours before taking them off – please note though that during the whole time I was wearing the contacts I was staring at a computer screen watching anime and, also, that my eyes had been incredibly tired and dry all day.
On my second run my eyes were feeling better but the lenses still felt dry just as fast – although I didn't get the "something's in my eye" feeling, except for maybe 10 seconds at first. I can wear them for a bit past 3 hours at most and that's about it, unless I use eyedrops of course. I find it a bit weird that these New Adult lenses are dry to me when my brother had the exact same lenses but in blue and yeah, they were godly in terms of comfort for him. :S Are our eyes that different even though we're supposed to be identical twins? lol

One lens in. Notice enlargement effect.
Honestly, my first thought when I had these lenses in my eyes was "cosplay lenses! :D". They are vivid and colorful and definitely give a cartoony look to your eyes but without it being overwhelming. They actually feel surprisingly natural-ish for their design. The green color is not a pure green but it's lovely nonetheless.

Psst, my real eye color is a blue-gray (more blue though, fyi) with an occasional greenish tint, depending on the light and time of day. I also have a golden ring closest to the pupil. :)

Lens photos batches ahead!
All photos are taken by me during a March morning with a clear sky. All close-up photos are free from filters, color edits etc and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.

Facing window in my apartment, sun side.
Standing under a (weak) lamp in my apartment.
Bathroom light.
Flash photo.
Facing the window in the corridor, non-sun side.
White corridor light.
Yellow corridor light.
Yellow light in the staircase.
Indoors in a storage room. (natural light)
As you can see the color appears very different in different lights – in some lights it takes on a grayish hue and in others it looks a bit turquoise! Most times it's still rather easily distinguished as some sort of green though, so it's okay! I can tell though that these lenses seem to appear as their true color in clear non-tinted lights, like sunlight etc.

Outdoor close-up photos!

Indirect sunlight. I'm standing under the shadow/roof.
Facing sun at a 3/4 angle.
Facing sun directly. My eyes hurt so much.
Back against sun, aka facing wall.
The design is, err... semi-natural I'd say? The vibrancy of the color is far from natural but I think that the print itself is not too "out there", so to say. The black limbal ring is thin and I feel like it helps to bring attention to my eyes because of how it kinda frames them in.

I must say that I love the color these have, it's such a beautiful shade that has a lot of variation depending on the light! These are definitely cosplay lenses and I can understand why they are popular with cosplayers – they do give the anime eye look without being too moe. Works great for male characters and those kinds of characters that you don't want huge doll eyes for!

Facing a window in the staircase.
Same as above. ^
Okay so, I'd highly recommend the EOS New Adult line for cosplayers and people who love colorful lenses that aren't too enlarging, because these are quite small for being circle lenses. These lenses are really versatile and can be used for more daily looks as well as some really funky fashion looks!

Distance photos! Enjoy ~

If you are interested in other colors of the New Adult line, check out this review: Blue

I want to mention in the end that the only slightly disappointing thing with CircleLensesEurope and its Swedish counterpart is that they don't carry prescription lenses – at least not currently. I don't know if they plan to start selling those anytime soon but I hope so since yeah, a lot of people don't have perfect vision and no prescription lenses is a deal breaker for many. Personally my vision defects are so minor (-0,50 on my weaker eye) that I'm perfectly fine with plano lenses but if you can't wear lenses without power I'm so sorry to say that, sadly, CircleLensesEurope might not be the shop for you. :(

Remember, if you make a purchase atCircleLensesEurope or Cirkellinser you can get 10% off any order if you use the discount code "SHIRO" during checkout – enjoy! ♡

Short summary:

Color: 10/10
Really beautiful green color that shows up well and takes on many different shades depending on where you are!
Design: 9/10
Semi-natural design that is perfect for cosplay!
Opacity: 9/10
These cover my real eye color well. Nothing to complain about.
Enlargement: 5/10
Feels quite small, but it's definitely not a bad thing.
Comfort: 6/10
They are kinda average in comfort for me. They don't hurt my eyes in any way nor hinder my vision but they start to feel dry already after 1 hour. I can stand wearing these formaximum 3,5 to 4 hours without wanting to take them off or use eyedrops.
Naturalness: 6/10
These are not exactly natural but they are not overly costume-y either. Shouldn't freak out your nearby grandma, at least...

~~~~~~~~~
Jag blev kontaktad av Cirkellinser här ganska nyligen och dom frågade ifall jag ville samarbeta med dem, vilket jag självklart tackade ja till!
Cirkellinserär en svensk online-affär –högst troligtvis den första och endai vårt avlånga land som säljer äkta "circle lenses", känd på svenska som cirkellinser.
Dock så, tyvärr, säljer inte Cirkellinser linser med styrka i nuläget
– själv så har jag så pass svagt synfel att plano linser (aka utan styrka) inte stör mig alls. :)
Jag valde att recensera ett par linser som heter EOS New Adult Green (bilder finns ovanför!) då jag länge velat testa dessa och då jag, helt ärligt, är överförtjust i just gröna linser, av någon anledning.
Linserna kom i ett litet vadderat kuvert redan på måndag, fast de hade skickats med söndagsposten! I kuvertet fanns även ett visitkort med en handskriven hälsning på baksidan, ett gratis linsetui samt linserna själv som var förpackade i en söt liten snörpåse.
Linserna är relativt små för att vara just cirkellinser och de har en jättefin grön färg som täcker mina blågråa ögon väldigt bra! Dessa linser är perfekta för alla som sysslar med cosplay, fantasy-utklädnarereller gillar japansk mode etc då dessa får ens ögon att se 'anime' ut!
För mig är dessa ganska medelmåttiga i bekvämlighet, men då jag har torra och/eller känsliga ögon så ta det med en nypa salt. ^^" Jag kan bära dessa som mest i ungefär 4 timmar, utan återfuktande ögondroppar. De börjar torka ut mina ögon efter ungefär en timme, vilket är en kort tid om man jämför med några andra cirkellinser jag haft. Men fast de blir torra fort så är de bekväma ändå då de inte annars känns obehagliga på något sätt (inget kliande, stickande eller röda ögon etc) och de hindrar inte min syn heller. :) Dessa är dessutom lätta att få i ögonen!
Jag kan helhjärtat rekommendera dessa linser, de är verkligen hur fina som helst!
Som sagt jag fick dessa från Cirkellinser, en professionell och pålitlig hemsida med kalasbra kundservice.De säljer endast äkta cirkellinser som är tillverkade i Korea! De har även en äkthetsgaranti samt öppet köp i 30 dagar – allt för att göra dig trygg! Beställningar som gjorts före klockan 14:00 skickas samma vardag och frakttiden inom Sverige ligger på ynka 1-2 dagar och kostar endast 19 kr snacka om service! Jag kan verkligen rekommendera dem starktför alla!
 Om du dessutom använder rabattkoden "SHIRO" i kassan så får du 10% avdraget på vilken beställning som helst! Alla vi älskar ju att spara lite pengar på våra köp, inte sant?
Thanks for reading and I hope you found this review helpful. ^.-
A biiiiig thank you to CircleLensesEuropeandCirkellinser for sponsoring me!
Childhood nostalgy & dream cosplays!
$
Good day everyone! o(^◇^)o
For a while now I've been itching to make some kind of post about characters that I really liked as a kid and that, nowadays, have a sort of "childhood dream/nostalgy cosplay" status to them! Even though I feel like I can't call many of my cosplays 'dream cosplays' I guess some of these child favorites of mine do come rather close to it. :) Many of these served as childhood heroes and as characters that I related to, admired or just simply really loved when growing  up.
Okay so, even though these characters listed below might be more or less vastly different from one another, they all still have something in common and that's that they were dear to me during my childhood and that also includes early & mid teenage years. Wow, that makes me sound so old.
What are we waiting for, let's gooooo ~
Series: Digimon
Character: Angemon
Oh man, good ol' original Digimon Adventure. As a kid I was one of those few (?) who loved Pokémon and Digimon equally,aka I never really understood the "war of copies" comparisons between them that other kids made and thus picked sides saying that you could only like one or the other, not both. I always thought that even though both had some similarities they also had a lot of differences too!
 Patamon was always my favorite of the main Digimons because he was just so damn cute! I have at least two different Patamon plush dolls lying around somewhere. I remember watching the show as a kid for the first time and when Patamon finally evolved into Angemon I was so excited – he was so freakin' cool! *o* But yeah, everyone who watched Digimon knows what happens after that and yeah, the feels are real with this one. *gross sobbing*
Angemon seriously stayed as one of my all-time favorite Digital Monsters (Takeru/T.K was my favorite of the original children too!) and now that I'm into cosplay I really want to do him. I can't live with myself if I don't cosplay Angemon one day. It needs to happen, period.
Friendly note: I know that Angemon is quite heavily inspired by Christianity but, honestly, the religious aspects of his character have nothing to do with why I like, nor want to cosplay, him.
Series: Digimon Adventure 02
Character: Ken Ichijouji
I want to cosplay at least one of the early DigiDestined (aka Chosen Children in the Japanese version) and I remember really liking Ken when I was young; I had some sort of early mancrush on him, lol. I never saw the complete second season but I rewatched it last year and when Ken finally snapped and hugged Wormmon I had a hard time keeping the tears in check – he's so precious. ;A; I hadn't seen that part of the anime before, so I had no idea that he'd actually revert back to being a good guy and, oh boy, did that dig him up from my childhood memories as one of my human favorites from Digimon!
I really want to cosplay him but I'm not 100% sure of which version I'd do; I am currently leaning towards his gray school uniform though. It's pretty dang iconic.
Series: Beyblade
Character: Ray Kon (Rei Kon in Japan)
I don't remember exactly when it was, but I guess around my early teenage years I suddenly got into a Beyblade craze. The original series aired on television and I saw some random episodes during a summer vacation at dad's; I later asked dad for money and went and bought some Beyblades to play with from the local toy store. xD I remember originally liking Kai more than Ray but afterwards I started digging Ray a lot and even more so when, last year, the wonderful Satu and Päivi from Leikkipuisto encouraged me to do him!
I never really told my friends that I used to like Beyblade but several toys, a GBA game and Beyblade bed covers speak for themselves, haha. I should really watch the original series properly one day. #closetfan
Series: Beyblade
Character: Kai Hiwatari
What should I say? xD We share the same name, I can relate to him in some ways and I must admit that I had a tiny mancrush for him too. :'D I just really liked him as a kid, okay? I dig his design surprisingly much too but I think one of his selling points to me was that his Bit-Beast was based on a phoenix and, well, I always had a huge fascination with birds. I also like his color scheme and I'm itching to tackle that wig because holy crud, that's gonna be one heck of a challenge!
Series: InuYasha
Character: Sesshoumaru
My first and original husbando, not gonna lie. I loved him so much and I still do!!
InuYasha was the first manga I started collecting/reading and I own every single manga volume (in Finnish) of it; it has a special place in my heart. InuYasha is what really hooked me into manga and anime for good and it's one of those series that made me realize that I had been into anime & manga *coughpokémoncough* long before I knew what it was. :D So yeah, aside from being one of my long-term favorite mangas I can say that InuYasha is very likely one of the series that also led me into finding out about cosplay. I honestly plan to cosplay a lot more characters from it but Sesshoumaru is the number one choice, by miles. I just feel like I must do him someday and I'm really relieved that I didn't decide on him as my first cosplay, lol. xD I'll do him when I feel that I can do him justice, haha. He's such a dear character to me, I don't want to mess it up.
Series: Pokémon
Character: Tracey Sketchit
Who remembers this guy?
I've been a hardcore Pokémon fan since the first games and TCG came out (I was around six years old I think) and my whole childhood centered around Pokémon, not gonna lie. x) I was one of those mildly obsessed kids and I'm still going strong about it, even though nowadays I don't require my birthday cake to be a big marzipan Pikachu, lol. Pokémon is what got me into manga and anime to begin with Pokémon is what made me who I am today.
Okay so, I honestly don't remember all that much about this guy but I remember liking him and that's mainly because he was an artist and so were I! His design is simple, nostalgic and very typical of early Pokémon and so I thought "why not"? :D Besides, he gives me a legit reason to bring along a drawing pad to conventions and actually practice sketching Pokémons... which I haven't done for years, even though as a child that was almost the only thing I drew, lol. Aaaah, memories... ~
Series: Pokémon
Character: James
Well, contrary to Tracey, James hardly needs an introduction! He's from the infamous Team Rocket duo who always tries to steal Ash's Pikachu or do some other mischievous shenanigans to mess up their day. The thing is that whatever they do and no matter how idiot-proof their idea might have been they will always end up... blasting off again.
I remember that even as a kid I thought that Team Rocket were way too predictable and annoying because you knew they'd always fail! But nevertheless I liked their silly tries and even sillier costumes they'd wear to try to fool Ash and his gang; sometimes they went to great lengths just to get that damn Pikachu and it just makes me wonder why they even bother when Pikachu is not even a rare Pokémon to begin with, lol.
But yeah, even though I did find Team Rocket mildly annoying I still always, somehow, liked James. Something about him that I can't put my finger on was interesting – maybe because he could be so goofy and fabulous at the same time. It was hard to dislike him!
So yeah, expect me to cosplay James someday, although probably not in that gorgeous af Moltres suit... xD
Booonuuuuuus!
Series: Rölli
Character: Rölli
In honor because it's my dad's birthday today I have to uncover this secret dream!
My dad got me into Rölli when I was really really young and this funny little troll (although it has been said officially that he's not actually a troll) stayed with me all my life I still listen to the songs and I own the movies! The movies actually make me cry, no regrets.
Non-Finnish readers probably have no idea what I'm going on about because Rölli is an old Finnish classic television program aimed for children (read more about it here) but it's so quirky and entertaining that even adults love it, including my dad. The show does teach you a lot about important matters and in a funny way too, so that even kids can understand and relate to more adult problems etc. Dad always called me "rölli" as a kid and he still does it, lol.
The character Rölli himself is just so lovable (even though he'd say 'yuck'!) and I would love to cosplay him someday since he has been a sort of childhood hero and model for me albeit a quite different one, haha. :') I'm unsure about which costume version I want to do of Rölli since there exists quite a few; I really liked the movie version pictured above because of those big fantasy helmets and all but yeah, the original Rölli has its charms too. Decisions, decisions...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Please note that this list only includes characters with a humanoid appearance, even though I would have plenty of Digimon and Pokémon gijinkas to list. I'll save those for another time! ;)

Okay so, I think these are plenty enough to give you an idea of what my childhood was like. I am probably forgetting some characters, series or video games *cougharea88cough* but I'll just leave those for another time! Besides, it might be fun to keep some complete secrets, huehuehue ~

Thanks for checking out this post and please leave a comment if any of these characters interested you or anything! I'd love to hear about your childhood characters too and hey, I'm totally up for doing cosplay groups! *hinthint*

Lens review: I.Fairy Star Blue

Welcome ~

Today I will treat you all to a circle lens review! I will be reviewing the super adorable I.Fairy Star Blue lenses! o(・ω・)o These lenses feature a really unique star-shaped design with a thick black limbal ring – perfect for big-eyed cute and magical looks!

Let's roll!

Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 16.2 mm
Water content: 55%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)

As you can see my lenses came in different I.Fairy vials – but that's really nothing to worry about. It just means that the lenses are from different production batches; it happens every now and then and, especially, if you order lenses with different prescriptions. :) As long as you have the I.Fairy authenticity stickers on the vials you can be sure that you've received genuine and safe-to-wear lenses!

I put the lenses to soak the evening before I had planned on wearing them; you should take them out of the bottles at least 8 hours before wearing because the solution used to store them in the bottles is not the same you use.

One lens in. Shows enlargement effect.
Upon insertion the lenses felt very slightly irritating for the first minute, but that went away rather quickly. They are comfortable and don't block my vision in any way but, most of the time, I could tell that I was wearing contacts. They seem to dry out fast for me though; the first punches of dryness came already within the 1,5-2 hour range and after 3 hours had passed I really wanted to take them out. Please note though that I've had especially tired and sensitive eyes lately, which might be part of the reason why I couldn't stand these for very long.
Another thing is that after taking off the lenses my left eye was really sensitive and stingy for about 30 minutes it basically felt like there was an eyelash hair in my eye that I couldn't get out. My eye hurt if I put pressure on it, rubbed it or anything like that. Luckily it went away by itself but it was weird since I never experienced anything like it before. I think it might be because the left lens would have expired on June 2016 if I had not opened it. The right lens expired first on 2019 so yeah, might explain why it was only the left one that gave the "afterburn".

Lens photos coming up!
All photos taken by me during an April afternoon with a semi-clear sky. All close-up photos are free from color filters and such and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.

Natural apartment room light, facing wall. (lamps off)

As you can see these lenses are rather big and they have a really prominent thick black limbal ring that gives you a cute dolly and/or animated look. ^.^ The lenses have a really unique star-shaped design and I think it's really cool! I've never come across other lenses with a similar print so I do like it a lot! What makes it even better is that the blue shade is really beautiful and it shows up well and does, in fact, blend rather nicely with my light blue-gray eyes; I didn't expect them to fit in with my eyes as well as they did, considering how vibrant the color is and how artistic and unnatural the design is!

The I.Fairy Star series might be better suited for j-fashion styles like decora, pastel goth, fairy kei and such rather than for cosplay. I don't intend to say that they don't fit cosplay purposes but I think that the design of the lenses complements cute fashion looks better and, I think, that the big pupil hole might not make the lenses jump out as much as needed for cosplay photography especially when the cosplayer is seen from a distance and the eyes need to grab attention from afar.
A big pupil hole means that more of your own eye color shows through in the middle, which I know that some people with naturally light eyes finds doesn't look right and "clashes" with the color of the lens. Personally I'm neutral/indifferent to the look but I do acknowledge that a big pupil hole also means that the lens won't hinder your vision (colored corners when you move gaze etc) and this I really appreciate.

Distance photos!

I tried to go for a cute and timid candy-like look. I wanted to try to bring out a youthful, shy and innocent feeling. (◕ᴗ◕✿) wiee ~

Short summary:

Color: 8/10
Beautiful and vivid blue shade that shows up well and isn't overwhelming.
Design: 9/10
Really pretty and unique star-shaped design with a thick black limbal ring!
Opacity: 8/10
The colored parts of the lens do have good color coverage.
Enlargement: 8/10
These are big and give you a dolly look!
Comfort: 4/10
Comfortable for short-time wear but dries out fast for me (3 hours). Left lens burns my eye after I take it out, likely because of it being close to expiring before I opened the bottle it was in.
Naturalness: 4/10
The huge and pronounced limbal ring makes these lenses look obviously like... well, lenses.

Cosvision 2016 cosplans – Be black and cover your eye!

Well, guess what guys?

My next convention will be Cosvision in Hämeenlinna, Finland, on 23-24 April. I'm not sure if I've revealed it anywhere but there ya go I'm coming after all!

The con is less than two weeks away now and yeah, I thought it would be about time to finally decide on what I'm going to cosplay there since, honestly, I've had a lot of problems with my cosplay plans changing every other day. ^^" I'm still not 100% sure that this is the final line-up but it should be assuming that no sudden cosplay malfunction happens or such.

~~~~~~
Regarding the con itself I need to say that at first I was unsure if I would even attend Cosvision. I was on the very first one in 2014 and now that the second one is coming up I felt very conflicted about attending; one part of me remembered how much I enjoyed the first Cosvision and the other part reminded me of how uncomfortable I've felt at bigger conventions lately. In one way I had been waiting for the return of Cosvision very eagerly and, on the other hand, my anxieties were telling me that it's gonna be a waste of money because I might not even feel okay there. I felt so torn and it was horrible to try to decide on what to do.
One thing was sure though – I refused to go without a group of friends. And thus I quickly learned that my brother, Frozen Angel, really really really wanted to go. I didn't really want to let him down because he's been hyped about the con ever since I went to the first one and told him what a blast it was; I guess he regretted not going back then and now he wanted to make up for it. I also managed to get Sacchan interested and that made me feel safe and understood because now I had someone else who knew what I was feeling; we both were really uncertain about attending because we've both been feeling bad at cons lately, for various reasons, but then we just decided to gamble and went all "I'll go if you go and if we feel shit at the con then we'll just withdraw to a corner and play Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate together." yaassss!
Originally Ronya was supposed to come with us too but she had to jump out a few weeks before the con would roll in because of health reasons. I still hope we'll get to go to a con together soon. :'(
Sorry about all the gloom but yeah, I'm really just hoping that Cosvision will be fun and that I won't feel shit there because, honestly, who wants to feel bad somewhere where you're supposed to feel safe and happy? I'm hoping it will have the same relaxed atmosphere as it had back when it was in Turku – I really want this to be a successful trip and not another Desucon Frostbite 2015.
But here comes the cosplay plans!
Saturday
Series: Pokémon
Character: Darkrai (gijinka)
This is the result of my "holy shit, I need to come up with a Saturday cosplay that I can pull from my closet!"-panic when I realized I had less than two weeks to go. Then again, I don't really mind because Darkrai is pretty cool and come on, he's like the Freddy Krueger of Pokémon, lol. Darkrai might not be one of my favorites (he's more Frozen Angel's type of Pokémon) because I prefer Cresselia and Arceus more from the same generation's legendaries/mythicals but yeah, I love me some black and spooky shit.
Sunday
Series: Fruits Basket
Character: Hatori Sohma
Hatori was not originally on my cosplay list (I had considered doing him once but that's about it) but then Firith asked me if I was interested in a Furuba pair cosplay with him as Ayame and I thought "why the hell not?". I mean, I haven't cosplayed from Fruits Basket in a while and Hatori is a very likable guy from the series – actually, he's my third favorite character from it. :)
I'll go with the random suit version instead of the probably-more-well-known vest and white doctor-ish jacket outfit. Oh and yeah, I'll do the long hair version and the manga portrayal instead of the anime version, which means that I'll have violet eyes instead of those weird dark greenish-gray eyes he has in the anime. Violet looks more fab, period. My reasoning though? The anime sucks and the manga is awesome and, besides, the manga is the original source anyway.
~~~~~~

That's about it for my plans. I hope to meet some friends at the con and I pray that it's gonna be worth it. I can say already now though that, as far as the cons in Finland go, I'm very unlikely to attend any other big con for the whole year; I'll still attend the local small cons but otherwise I'm really trying to save my money and prioritize some other things in life that are coming up this year. I have some Swedish cons in mind *coughnärconcough* that I want to go to but we'll see what my money situation says when the time is closer...

Thanks for reading and stay tuned for cosplay previews! Bye bye ~

Darkrai gijinka preview test!

Good day everyone!

A few days ago I posted my Cosvision plans and, because both of my chosen characters are new cosplays, I felt like I needed to do some quick test runs before the con, to see if they even look presentable! Actually both Hatori and Darkrai are, in a way, "closet cosplays", because both of their outfits I could put together from stuff I already own. Sssch, I'm cheap. Darkrai mainly consists of parts from other cosplays but I still have to admit that I am surprisingly satisfied with how it turned out.

But enough blabbering, now I'll treat you guys to a couple test run photos! ~

Photographer:Sacchan

I'm sorry about the overexposed white wig but
there was no saving it.
I most likely won't change anything on the outfit itself (unless I can find longer gloves) but the makeup was just a test and it's not the final look that I'm going for. I actually had no idea what to do and the preview shooting was kinda sudden so I just threw something together quickly, in terms of eye makeup, and prayed that it would look decent at least. I have some ideas now, after brainstorming with Sacchan, on what I want the makeup to look like and I hope it'll work out at the con. If anyone's curious the real eye makeup look is hopefully gonna be something along the lines of Jack Sparrow style. Fuck yeah!
Oh and yeah, the long ponytail will be tied in some way at the con because seriously, I can't stand having such a long thing hanging free it feels like it tangles if I just look at it. It's gonna be in some kind of braid or something because that's just a lot easier and more convenient. I seriously don't have the patience to detangle long wigs and keep them neat, although I wish I had because there's several characters that I want to cosplay who has long hair...

Just a close-up selfie.
I plan to use different contact lenses too. The ones I'm wearing on these pics are the EOS Bubble Blue's and, while they'd be great for Darkrai's eye(s), they have dropped in comfort since I opened them back in October last year. I think it's better I open another bright blue pair because yeah, I can't stand wearing lenses at a con if they dry out my eyes already on the first hours; I need something comfy for a full day event.

Just a Darkrai reference for those that don't
know what it looks like.
I just hope that I'll be somewhat recognizable as Darkrai, even though Pokémon gijinkas (aka humanized versions) are not always that easy to tell apart from some random Original Character, a-character-I-don't-know or whatnot. Oh well, whatever the case I won't be gijinka-ing alone because Sacchan will do a shiny Umbreon gijinka to accompany me – we'll be edgy af together! :'D Dark types ftw!

That's about it for this time. A Hatori test run post is coming up before Cosvision too!
Shiro Samurai says bye.

Hatori Sohma wig

Hello peeps!

Cosvision is really close now and I thought it's about time that I finish Hatori up! I actually have the whole costume ready, save for the wig. Closet cosplay, ssch.
I decided to sacrifice my old Hijikata wig for Hatori since I've bought another pure black wig for Hijikata, to match with the ponytail clip-on. You see, this wig, while it may look black on first glance, is actually a super dark brownish black and it looked horrible with the clip-on because, in some lights, you could clearly see the color difference – it started to annoy me more and more over the years, lol. So yeah, seeing how I'm not using said wig for Hijikata anymore I thought I could give it a new life! I don't like having perfectly usable wigs just lying around and collecting dust...

Wig before cutting. Front and side.
Hatori actually changed his hairstyle slightly in both the anime and in the manga; I couldn't find any manga references on a quick search so I decided to go with anime images since there is no difference, as far as I can remember I'm pretty sure the only notable difference on the manga and anime portrayals is his eye color.
I decided on doing the long-haired (the first version) instead of the short one, mainly because I like it a bit more. The short-haired version somehow looks so generic; I always thought long-haired Hatori was more recognizable in some way.

Hatori with long bangs...
... and with short bangs.
The reason he's covering his left eye is because he's almost blind on said eye. Fuck you, Akito. Hatori is a tragic character and I guess that's why I like him; I tend to prefer the more calm, quiet and kinda cold characters anyway and Hatori totally fits the bill.

Regarding styling the wig I didn't have to do all that much. I mainly shortened the bangs, straightened the sides since they were wavy and cut them shorter as well. I'm aware that the wig is not super accurate but I decided on leaving the sides a bit longer than what he has, mainly because I need something to frame my face because otherwise I look like shit... and then I feel uncomfortable.

Wig after cutting.
I will probably need to put in some more styling products and use some pins to keep certain parts in place but yeah, I'll save that for the con – don't want the styling to wear off before I even get to the hotel, lol. Might need to thin it down a bit too but yeah, we'll see.
Sacchan helped a bit with the cutting too, mainly to get both sides the same length since I have tendencies to fuck that up, haha.

Not so much more to say. I still need to do a preview test for Hatori, oh shit!
Shiro Samurai says see ya later!

Hatori Sohma quick outfit test

Good evening folks!

Cosvision is really close now and I'm honestly kinda panicking here; I haven't even started packing yet and we'll leave on Friday morning or afternoon, oops. I'm just a bit all over the place and I'm currently super stressed about a shitlot of things, argh! But yeah, with this post at least I get one thing less to fret about, namely knowing that my Hatori costume works and looks as it should. Mostly.

Hatori in the anime. Just to show what color reference I'm going with.
It's heavily implied in the manga at least that Hatori is pretty much never seen wearing anything except formal wear. He also wears very expensive designer's suits but yeah, since I'm a poor student I can't do the same, obviously. ( ; 3;) I do have a few suit jackets but they're all second-hand findings so ssssch about that. I went with a black one since that's the standard color and at least he has a black one on the screenshot above.

This one looks dark brown though...
But yeah, I decided to roll with black this time since black is always black and my pants were black anyway. Hatori should technically have other colors too if that's the only things he wears lol; I'd be bored out of my mind if my whole wardrobe only consisted of black suits...!

I did a super quick outfit try-on, to check that everything looks okay, and luckily at least it doesn't look like shit, lol. The wig might need some further styling but as I said on the wig post I'll do that at the hotel. ^^" Oh and yeah, I completely skipped all makeup (sorryyyyy) because I honestly couldn't be bothered just for the sake of one crummy mirror photo. I had no photographer available. I'll just improvise the makeup on the con morning and pray to the cosplay gods that it succeeds...

Note: Obviously (dirty) mirror photo.
Hence why the covered eye is reversed.
I crappily blurred out the whole background, since it was really distracting because of the mess and yeah, blended in too much with all the black too. Oh and yeah, ignore the blank stare please – I guess I did the 'memory suppression' on myself, lolololo.
I haven't decided yet if I'll keep the jacket open or closed; Hatori does both though so it doesn't really matter in terms of character accuracy. Oh well, whatever I do Hatori does not really have any signature traits that makes him stand out from all the other "handsome and properly dressed men" in anime so yeah, I might not be recognized anyway. x) I guess the only thing really making him a bit less generic-looking is the blocked left eye but yeah, that's about it. I hope having Firith running around as Ayame Sohma with me will help people know that I'm supposed to be a Sohma family member too and not just a random guy in a suit, lol.

This is the last post you'll see from me before Cosvision! Hang on and I'll be back after 23-24th April with a con summary!

Cosvision 2016 – When the hotel breakfast is more interesting

Good evening everyone!

I've returned safely from my trip to Cosvision in Hämeenlinna, Finland, and now I'm writing to tell you all about the con. I honestly still have the "con hangover" but I just want to get this summary done and out as soon as possible, haha.
Soooooooooo... let's roll!

So, for those not in the know, Cosvision was held on 23-24 April and I went there with our kakkaravut trio of me, Frozen Angel and Sacchan. Awesome company always makes things better!
We had decided quite early on that we'd carpool southwards with Sacchan's car and that's also what happened. The road trip down went well and although it was long and occasionally tiring we didn't run out of shit to talk about – we're seriously such a close-knit bunch that we always have loads of fun together, no matter what!
I think the traveling took around 8 hours. I don't feel such long car trips anywhere because I'm so damn used to sitting in a car for hours and hours upon end; once when I was a little kid dad even drove all the way from southern Sweden to goddamn Italy. Beat that. That was, by the way, one of my most memorable childhood experiences.

Start of our journey. Nice weather graced us!
We were blessed with good weather when we started and it stayed good all the way down. We had all kinds of hilarious discussions to kill time and there was never a boring moment – our topics included everything from shit that only dads say to cosplay group plans and literal shit stories. There was also something really bizarre about waving baguettes around...
We also laughed hard at a car with a roof box that read "qualit box"– much qualit, such wow. :'D Another one was a Hesburger logo with only the Hesbur part lit up and the ger was occasionally blinking; it stayed as a joke for all Hesburger restaurants we saw afterwards. "Look, there's a Hesbur-ger-ger-ger-ger!" *insert Taking the Hobbits to Isengard here*

Oh and yeah, of course whenever we passed some town or whatnot with a possibly-funny-name-if-we-change-a-few-letters we of course pulled crappy jokes about it. You know, Mikkeli naturally turned into Kikkeli (lit. dick), Kinkomaa turned into Kinkymaa (lit. kinky land) and so on. No ragrets, hihi. We also bust a gut when we saw a resting place called Haarakangas (lit. crotch cloth) above Oulu – people who have watched Hetalia will understand.
Oh and also, a road called "Makkarajoentie" (lit. sausage river road) had us all howling with laughter. When I first saw it (we passed it by fast) I had a realization of "WAIT A SECOND. DID I JUST READ RIGHT?" and then Frozen Angel confirmed that he also read it. Oh lord the laughs that ensued.

Sunset! (and the obligatory river, because we're in Finland)
We stopped for a snack break at a Hesburger somewhere past Oulu and, although I didn't buy anything, I need to say that the service was so painfully slow I was cringing all along. There was like max two or three customers in front of our trio and it felt like it took way more than 15 minutes before that damn young woman working there got to us. She did everything so goshdarn leisurely I wondered how the heck she even got the job in the first place because it felt like watching a fucking sloth preparing french fries. Seriously horrible. I normally don't complain but it was just plain bad and frustrating – I even felt the need to leave one of those feedback papers to complain when we left because oh god, seriously? ._. Oh and yeah, Sacchan and Frozen Angel ordered smoothies and it was just too good when, after placing the order she said, all politely, that "it's just gonna take a short moment" and I couldn't help but roll my eyes as soon as we sat down waiting – a "short moment" was, of course, not short at all. :)) Geez.

Night-time driving.
Night fell and somewhere past Jyväskylä but before Hämeenlinna, in the middle of nowhere, the car in front of us suddenly came to an abrupt halt. We were really weirded out and wondered what was going on! Of course we had to stop completely as well when closing in and that's when we saw it – there was something on middle of the road that wasn't moving.
From a distance I first thought that it was some kind of light colored rock but as soon as we got a bit closer it became obvious that it was an animal. And it was.
...
But it was not the kind of animal you'd expect.

Hoot hoot, motherfucker.
This cute little owl was just sitting there, completely blocking the road and it didn't budge an inch (it was like a statue, seriously) nor open its eyes. It was weird and I really worried what was wrong with it; I've always loved birds and even after we passed the owl I could not stop thinking about it. Why was it there? Was it hurt? Did someone come to save it?
I saw that the woman in the car before us called someone; I really hope she called the animal protection peeps. I hope it survived. Poor thing. ;_;
Luckily it was close to midnight and on a calm road so maybe everyone else saw it on time too.

The clock was around midnight when we finally reached Hämeenlinna, our destination. We had been keeping in touch with Firith all along the journey because he was the fourth member of our group and the one who had booked the hotel for all of us. We found the right place, parked the car in the hotel's parking lot, checked in and pretty much immediately went to sleep because we all were so tired. I shaved my poor beard before going to bed because yeah, gotta be smooth for the sake of cosplay ~

Third floor hotel corridor showing the two rooms we had.
Me and Sacchan shared one room (number 330) and Frozen Angel and Firith shared another room just next to ours (332). The hotel was Original Sokos Hotel Vaakuna. Pretty nice hotel, nothing to complain about. The huge amount of pillows was appreciated and, especially, the mega-sized one lol.

Our hotel room on the morning.
Saturday morning came. Holy crud it felt horrible to wake up after such a long journey and with only like 6 hours of sleep. I'm just really not a morning person, at all. Ugh.
I kicked up Sacchan, we put on our travel/casual clothes and went to knock on our double trouble's door and then we headed down to eat breakfast buffet together. The hotel breakfast was better than I expected; there was actually a lot of really tasty stuff and the variation was good! I even managed to eat a lot without feeling overly stuffed and getting the whole "feel nauseous in the morning" crap. Thing is that on con mornings I tend to be unable to eat much at all (especially hotel breakfasts, which is frustrating) because I'll just start feeling sick and, well, it sucks.

After breakfast we started putting on our cosplays for the day; I was to do a Darkrai gijinka from Pokémon and Sacchan did shiny Umbreon. I had some trouble with the eye makeup so Sacchan did the Jack Sparrow eyes for me, haha. ( ; 3;)
When we were done all four of us started walking towards Verkatehdas, which ended up being really close to the hotel. We took the slightly longer shore way to check for photoshoot locations and just outside the hotel there were this really cool stone ruin things and I, of course, wanted a quick shooting there.

When we got to the con area my first impression when I saw the outside was "uhmm, looks a bit dead"; I was somehow expecting there to be a bit more life outside. Then again, it's not really alarming because you just kinda assume most people stay indoors anyway.

A view of Verkatehdas' entrance. The building Cosvision was held in.
As soon as we stepped inside we went to get our con tickets from the table in the entrance – it went very quick and without issues. What surprised me though was that the con bands were not fabric and not paper either. They were plastic and looked like those wrist bands you get in hospital when you're stuck there with some serious disease. What the fuck. I was honestly kinda disappointed. The ticket made me look like I had just escaped from some asylum, lol. It didn't feel like a con ticket.

Cosvision con ticket.
My first two impressions as soon as we got to the main area of the con were "confusing" and "comme ci comme ça". It felt like there was something missing. I was honestly kinda weirded out when the first thing I saw was groups and groups of con attendants just filling out the stairs doing nothing; it instantly gives an impression that people are bored and have nothing else to do than engage in idle chitchat with their friends. It was disappointing because there was not much to do and you could tell on the people that pretty much everyone seemed to be thinking the same things you were, aka that the con felt half-assed and overhyped. I mean, the location/building is great and very fitting for a con but some placements were poor *coughartistalleycough* and it felt a bit confusing. The main issue though was that there simply was nothing to do unless you liked to play board games or stuff like Twister or something. There was no video game room, no anime karaoke, no crafts room, no activities, nothing. Time went by so slowly because you just spent time staring at the clock and walking through the merchandise hall over and over again, although you had nothing to buy.
I can sorta understand that because it's a cosplay focused con they maybe didn't prioritize activities for whatever reasons (hard to sit in elaborate costumes etc) but seriously, if there's nothing to do people just end up sitting on the floors and stairs and the whole con atmosphere disappears or feels like a "hang out with friends con", no matter how big and pompous the con's original idea was. Honestly, Cosvision ended up feeling like a Kitacon in the south with some top-class cosplays. Really disappointing and especially so because the last Cosvision was a success.

I spent almost all of my con time just sitting around whenever wherever and just chatting with my friends and photoshooting outside. It was so dull and if I had gone alone I would have been bored out of my mind in, like, 10 minutes. Once again it was my company that saved the con experience and my Nintendo 3DS. I also really enjoyed that I got to see some con friends I hadn't seen in a couple years, like Ri-kun.

Random photo of the main area.
Entrance view.
Oh and yeah, the merchandise hall was kinda... lackluster. There was like below 10 shops and they were all those basic ones that you see at every Finnish convention and which products you've already plowed through more than enough times. Only Bard & Jester was refreshing to see and their stuff is always inspiring to look at anyway. Oh and yeah, there was this one little shop there where you could buy slush and cotton candy – that was a cool surprise that I wasn't expecting.

A big selection of Ramune flavors. Too overpriced for my taste though.
Merchandise hall.
Merchandise hall. The shop to the left (Bard & Jester) was the best/coolest one!
I need to say that the placement of Artist's Alley was meh. I honestly completely missed it on the first day because it was placed in a spot where it was hidden by the entrance area's wall, no matter which direction you came from. There was no signs either telling people that it was there; the only sign pointing to that direction said "ticket information spot" or something like that and it didn't even cross my mind to check it out because I didn't have any issues with my con ticket, lol. I think the cinema was there too but yeah, never saw a sign for the Artist's Alley.
It felt like Artist's Alley probably suffered from the bad placing; they were kinda separated from the rest of the building where stuff happened, you know, the "dark corner" effect. Why wasn't it put in the same place as the merchandise hall? It would have been better because then the merch hall wouldn't have felt so empty.
Artist's Alley was small (approximately 6 sellers) and I didn't really find the items for sale that interesting – almost everyone sold necklaces/jewelry, for some reason. I did find a nice Megaman necklace that I bought as a present for my big sister but I didn't buy anything for myself.

One of the Artist's Alley tables.
OMG SILLIS MERCH.
The photo above was by far the best thing with Artist's Alley – I honestly mentally died of laughter when I saw it. xD Non-Finnish people won't get it but those weird Donald Duck things are a huge meme in Finland (Finland is a Donald Duck country, fyi) that was made by SilliS. Pretty much everyone knows them –at least if they've spent time on Youtube's weird side– and they are absolutely hilarious, if you have that kind of humor of course. The guy selling those presumably had some contact with SilliS himself (probably friends) and they had teamed up to create those merchandises. Yes, I asked him and he told me that it was a collaboration project with SilliS so yeah, they were as official as they could be! I was sad that the Donald ones had sold out because I would instantly have bought a necklace with "AQ-sedä" on it, hihi.

Around 16:00 or something all four of us headed back to the hotel to eat some provisions and some of us changed out of cosplay. Me and Sacchan then got hungry and we headed out with the car to go find a Hesburger. It turned out Hämeenlinna, aka Hämärälinna, is a confusing place to drive in – we got lost and just went around in circles and then we ended up accidentally exiting Hämeenlinna and going into the main road. Oops. Luckily there came an ABC shop/restaurant/gasoline station (it's all three of them, lol) where we could turn our car around and then, much to our luck in misfortune, said ABC had a Hesburger! It didn't quite go as planned but we got our burgers so we were happy, lol.

Obligatory con diet. #heseläski
After stuffing our faces with cheeseburgers we headed back to the hotel to leave the car and then we decided to go back to the con. Much to our surprise we quickly learned at the con's outdoor area that it had already closed for the day. Excuse me but... what the actual fuck?
The con closed its doors 18:00 on the goshdarn main day and I had a hard time believing it. Seriously, I paid 25,70 € for a two-day weekend ticket and it closes at fucking six in the evening?? Urrrrgh. >_> What a waste of money! I'm an evening person and that's about the time I get started and into the con mood but lolnope, you pay a high ticket price for a con that closes in time for the kiddies to have supper and go to sleep. The disappointments just kept coming, I swear.
I'm used to even small cons in Sweden being, first off, three days long and, secondly, both cheaper and open 24/7. Finnish cons are such a joke in comparison and everything's overpriced and adghsadsjhafjh – it's just not worth it. I guess I'll keep to going to cons in Sweden in the future because every time I give a Finnish con in the south a chance lately I've just ended up with a huge hole in my wallet and nothing to make it worth all the travel expenses etc all the way from the north. Bah.

So yeah, we stayed outside to photoshoot Firith's cosplay and then he and Frozen Angel wanted to do some Hetalia pairing photos. We had a lot of laughs because things escalated quickly but it got cold past sunset and I ended up freezing so bad I had trouble pressing the buttons on my camera. On the way back to the hotel I also somehow twisted my left knee (I have weird joints) and it hurt like living hell. I'm not normally the person to complain about pain but it was seriously so bad I could not bend my knee at all and thus had to walk with my left leg completely straight.
We made our way back to the hotel, most of us disappointed and annoyed with the overly early closing time. Me and Sacchan stayed outside to photoshoot my Darkrai costume more properly now that I got to borrow FankiFox's long black gloves. The photoshoot pictures will be posted separately.

The remainder of the night I spent chitchatting with Sacchan and we came to the conclusion that Cosvision really was a bummer or, as we said in Finnish, "mitäänsanomaton ja juostenpaskattu". Seeing how early it closed it's not worth it because we seriously spent more time in the car driving to the con than at the con itself, lol. It's just so weird because they had two years to make it good and still it feels like the arrangers just pooped and the execution fell short. The whole con just felt so lackluster and indifferent and it didn't make things better that panels and lectures were cancelled left and right, including the one by Panther's Tear Forge about cosplay against bullying, which I had looked forward to the most on Saturday. There were few panels to begin with and that also made for the feeling that there was nothing to do and it only got worse because stuff got cancelled and nothing replaced the gaping holes in the schedule. Then again, it's not really the con's fault if a lecturer informs super late that they can't come, but still. The amount of bore was too much, especially considering the ticket price – take off 10 € from the price and it would have been acceptable.

Sunday morning eventually came and we woke up at seven. I noticed early on that my eyes were living their own life and because of it I decided to skip cosplaying Hatori on this day. My eyes were seriously watering so much I could not even keep them open; I was squinting and rubbing and my eyes just cried non-stop for hours and it was horrible. I've never experienced anything like it. The corners of my eyes were super sensitive too and wearing any kind of makeup was out of the question.
Normally going without a cosplay would have felt like going naked but now I didn't even feel bad about it, mainly because of the disappointment – it felt like it didn't even matter. Sure that I would have loved to take pair photos with Firith as Ayame but oh well, no can do when my eyes took the early checkout ticket.

Me and Sacchan headed directly for the hotel's breakfast buffet as soon as we put on our clothes and I'm not gonna lie – the hotel breakfast was more interesting than the con itself; I looked forward to it more. The food was surprisingly good and varied (I've eaten at a lot of restaurant breakfasts) and it was the highlight of the day, lol. Going to the con wasn't exciting at all and we didn't even care about being there early because there wasn't anything to do anyway.

Hotel breakfast, showing the options of "what to put on your bread".
Cookies, nuts and muesli etc.
My first plate. The Karelian pastries were awesome.
14:00 I headed for Cidi's and Hitsuwa's lecture – at least it wasn't cancelled. I liked it, it was fun and nice to listen to what they had to say. The bad thing is that the person keeping track of time (a con worker) fucked up and so their panel ended at least 15 minutes ahead of time because she was stressing them up, even though they would have had plenty of time. ._. Seriously...

Panel start.

We left the con around 16:30 because my mom called me while I was in the food market with Ri-kun (buying something to eat) and asked if we had left Hämeenlinna already. I told her that we were about to leave and she told us to hurry up because absolutely horrible weather –and thus driving conditions– was coming our way; seemingly it had even been announced in the news that anyone going out with summer tires should stay home or take public transports like train or bus. It was supposed to be that bad but, honestly, we drove all the way home and not a shit happened. Then again, maybe we were just master ninjas and magically avoided the bad weather somehow, who knows?

~~~~~~~~~~
But yeah, I don't even know what more to say about the con itself. The whole con was such a mess and it lacked anything to make it entertaining and worthwhile, save for amazing cosplayers. It really needed more activities, more panels, more sellers, more everything. People really put on their best outfits but the con itself was such a drag and a huge disappointment. :( I remember the first Cosvision fondly but this was just so bad that I don't even think I'd attend the next Cosvision unless some real improvements happen; it simply was not worth the money and time it took for us three to travel there and back.
It was sooooo disappointing that I don't even know what to say! So much wasted potential because seriously, they had all the time and means to make it amazing (I mean come on, the only cosplay-focused con in the whole country!) and still it managed to end up so bland and insignificant. It's just sad because I at least had high expectations and hopes for the con and then it ended up being such a mediocre "hang with friends" con, except with amazing cosplays.
One of the best things of the con was that I got Elffi's signature!
That's about all that I have to say. Thanks for reading.
Darkrai photoshoot – Harbinger of Nightmares
Good afternoon!
I mentioned having had a Darkrai gijinka (Pokémon) photoshoot during Cosvision and that I'd post the photos separately – this is it! These photos were taken on Saturday, around 16:00 local time, next to some ruins we found near the hotel we were staying at. I loved the location and it provided the backdrop I had hoped I'd find for Darkrai!
...
Blah blah blah. I won't keep you waiting any longer, so here!
Enjoy the photos! ~ (っゝω・)っ
Cosplayer:Shiro Samurai (Darkrai)
Photographer:Sacchan
Photo editor:Shiro Samurai
The eye makeup is done by Sacchan and the gloves are borrowed from FankiFox, just for this shoot. Thank you guys, you're awesome.
The photoshoot was fun, although the sun was occasionally too bright and thus my white wig got overexposed on a lot of photos. :/ #whitewigproblems
Also, some people (presumably other hotel guests) passed us by but no one said anything, save for that some totally stopped dead in their tracks just to stare at us for some minutes. It was really awkward, lol.
That's all for this shooting. Thanks for watching! ^.^
Lens review: Flora Diva Violet
  Hello folks! ~
I have prepared a circle lens review for you all to enjoy and the pair I'm reviewing this time is the Flora Diva Violet! ^.^ As far as I know I've only seen the Flora lens series being sold at HoneyColor so yeah, they're maybe exclusive to them, I don't know? The point is that if you want to purchase these lenses for yourself then that's where you should be looking!
But now let's get on with the review!
Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 15.0 mm
Water content: 55%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)
As you can see these lenses have a rather simple yet appealing design; it reminds me slightly of flower petals and thus of summer. The black limbal ring is fairly thin and has black streaks that reach towards the pupil hole, which makes the lenses look a bit more natural in a way. I like the design surprisingly much even though it's not anything super unique or so – it's a really versatile lens that will work with many different looks!
One lens in. Notice enlargement.
My natural eye color, for anyone curious, is a light blue-gray with an occasional greenish tint (depending on light) and with a golden ring next to the pupil. My eyes more often appear as blue than gray though.
These lenses are quite big but they are not over the top and I don't find that they look overwhelming or "off"; I was actually surprised by how natural they looked once I had both lenses in, despite their size and unnatural color. The violet shade is lovely in all ways and it shows up really well – it's opaque and leaves nothing to be desired in terms of color coverage.
Lens photos below!
All photos taken by me during an April afternoon with a semi-clear sky. All close-up photos are free from color filters and such and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.
Yellow light in the corridor.
Yellow light in the staircase.
Facing an orange-ish light in the staircase, with natural light
from a window coming from the side.
Standing in the staircase with my back against the window. (only
natural light)
Indoors storage room. (natural light coming in from the side)
Outdoors, back against the sun. (aka facing wall)
Outdoors facing the sun directly. it hurt
Outdoors, indirect sunlight. I'm facing the sun but sitting
under the roof, aka in the shadow.
These are the first Flora lenses I'm trying out (I own a lot more but those will be reviewed when their time comes) and I must say that I'm pleased with them.
Regarding comfort I had no trouble inserting them and the lenses actually gave a fresh moistening feeling as soon as I put them into my eyes, woah! I could feel them for the first couple of minutes or so but it was nothing out of the ordinary "hey I'm wearing lenses" feeling and thus didn't cause me any actual discomfort.
This pair does start to feel dry rather fast (as most of my lenses lately, for some reason) and I notice that I'm moving my gaze around a fair lot and blinking. They don't turn crazy dry immediately but in one hour or so I start to feel them a bit more than I'd like to but, then again, I seem to have dry and sensitive eyes so yeah, it's likely that others wouldn't have as much problems with dryness as I've been having lately. ^^" 3 hours in I find myself poking the corners and rubbing my eyes but they're still not quite uncomfortably dry yet that I'd go and take them off, unless I really felt like it. After 3,5 hours I took them off, mainly because I got a sudden headache out of the blue; I have no idea if it was related to the lenses or not but I just took them off anyway.
Distance photo!
Overall I want to say that these lenses make your eyes look really sparkly and beautiful without it being too much. Honestly, my first impression when I saw myself in the mirror after putting these lenses on was that I immediately thought that they'd be perfect for cosplaying bishounen characters, aka pretty boys. From a distance they make your eyes look really alluring and magical and it's just gorgeous as heck, mmmh!
I really recommend these especially for cosplay because the lens design is basic enough to work for most characters while still providing that "beautiful eye" look that looks absolutely amazing on photos! I'm sure though that these would be lovely for any other purposes too (go go alternative fashion!) and heck, they even work as everyday circle lenses! These are seriously versatileget them if you love purple lenses!
Short summary:
Color: 9/10
Absolutely amazing bright violet that looks truly magical!
Design: 8/10
A kinda basic but really pretty and versatile lens that works for many looks!
Opacity: 8/10
Surprisingly solid color opacity; I actually thought they would blend more but these deliver the boom!
Enlargement: 7/10
Big but not crazy big!
Comfort: 6/10
Average in comfort for me. They are comfy but just like with many other lenses they start to feel dry early for me. I guess I could stand to wear them anywhere between 3-5 hours without eyedrops.
Naturalness: 5/10
Despite being violet and quite big I still don't think that these look as unnatural as they should, lol.
Thank you for reading! I hope you enjoyed this review! ^.^
Lens review: I.Fairy Moonlite Blue
Shabbaloo, my friends!
Today I'll be treating you all to a circle lens review of a pair that is really crazy bright and perfect for cosplay! I'm of course talking about the I.Fairy Moonlite Blue lenses! These are AMAZING. *_*
Let's cut right to the chase!
Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 16.2 mm
Water content: 55%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)
Flash photo.
If you're familiar with circle lens styles you might notice that these have exactly the same design as the popular Princess Pinky Eclipse series (I've reviewed the pink ones here). I can say though that, while the design itself is pretty much identical, the main difference is that the I.Fairy Moonlite series is a lot more vivid and opaque! Yeah, these are so goshdarn vibrant that they show up virtually anywhere, no joke. You can't go wrong with these if you're looking for super-vibrant color that will show up no matter your natural eye color! The Moonlite series is the crowned king of vibrant color coverage. Period.
One lens in.
As you can see these are big and so obviously blue that if someone misses that you're wearing lenses then they are either blind or six feet under, lol. These have a really bright light blue color, kinda like some neon sky blue. The color is seriously amazeballs!
The Moonlite lenses are really enlarging, just like I.Fairy lenses in general – thou shall not expect I.Fairy lenses to be anything but big. ;) The comfort is pretty good too! I had no problems inserting them and my eyes adjusted themselves to these lenses really quickly. I don't really feel that I have them on and they don't sting nor anything; I don't get colored corners in my vision field either, thanks to the generous pupil hole. They start to feel slightly dryish around 3 hours but that's pretty good for me, seeing how my eyes are dry and sensitive more often than not; I can wear them for over 5 hours with little to no problems. Oh and yeah, speaking about my eyes, I guess it's worth mentioning that I'm a light-eyed person (duh!) and my eyes are something like a blue-gray but with an occasional greenish tint.
Lens photos coming up!
All photos taken by me during an April afternoon with a completely cloudy sky and hints of snow falling. All close-up photos are free from color filters and such and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.
Facing window in my apartment.
Apartment room light. (lamps on)
Bathroom light.
Flash photo.
White corridor light.
Yellow staircase light.
Orange-ish staircase light, with natural light (window) coming from the side.
Indoors storage room. (natural light from the side)
Outdoors, back against light. (aka facing wall)
Outdoors, facing light but sitting under the shadows/roof.
Outdoors looking up into the sky.
Notice that even in the poorest light conditions these are unmistakingly still a vibrant blue! :D I don't even need to show you what they would look like in bright sunlight because even when it's bloody cloudy outside these lenses scream "I'M SO BLUE I COULD SLAY YOU WITH MY INTENSE BLUENESS", haha. They show up from any distance too, which is always great if you're being photographed etc. :) The Moonlite series really don't cheap out on the color coverage and intensity! I honestly can't recommend these enough for cosplay! They'd be great for any character with light blue intense eyes or for a myriad of Pokémon gijinkas and such! Personally I used them for Darkrai and it looked fabulous. I seriously can't recommend these enough.
Distance photos!
I went for an elven prince look or something, heh.
I want to mention that the I.Fairy Moonlite lenses are a fairly new addition to the circle lens market I remember they didn't exist a couple years back, if even that. They come in a variety of common and rare colors and are perfect for anything from funky, odd to extreme fashion! I seriously love these lenses and I would definitely repurchase them if I need them for any future cosplays.
Short summary:
Color: 10/10
Incredibly vibrant light blue color that everyone
and I mean everyone– will notice!
Design: 7/10
Features a dotted inner circle and a single color. Very versatile and cosplay-friendly!
Opacity: 10/10
These are a godsend in coverage and a definite "must have"! Leaves nothing to be desired.
Enlargement: 8/10
Provides a big eye look but it's not overly dolly since the limbal ring is thin.
Comfort: 8/10
Pretty good! I don't really feel them and can wear them for 5+ hours without any real problems, save for some occasional dry feelings.
Naturalness: 1/10
Pffffft. Think again.
 Thanks for reading! If you have any questions just leave them in the comments! ^.^
Lens review: I.Fairy Trinity Green
Hello and May the 4th be with you! ;)
Once again I'm here to share a circle lens review with you peeps and this time the lights are on the I.Fairy Trinity Green lenses! These contact lenses have a very unique pattern and a blue-green teal color to them, niiiiiice ~
Let's roll out the review!
Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 16.2 mm
Water content: 55%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)
Lens to the right shows wrong side out.
If you wonder why my lenses have different labels it's nothing to worry about – they just happen to be from different production batches. It happens. The authenticity stickers are more important to pay attention to.
One lens in.
As per usual I.Fairy lenses are quite big although, for some reason, these somehow feel smaller to me than many other I.Fairy lenses I've had...? Might just be an illusion though.
The Trinity series sport a really artistic design that makes me think about some kind of fantasy or gothic castle or something like that – it's really different and thus refreshing and intriguing! I can admit that I bought these mainly for the rad design, huehuehue. Another reason I was drawn to this pair was the teal color; you don't find lenses with said color that often and I love teal anyway.
Regarding comfort my first impression of these lenses wasn't all that good; I felt them clearly in my eyes and it bothered me. Luckily my eyes got used to them and so I can safely say that these lenses fall into the "uncomfortable at first but comfy after eyes get used to them" box. Comfort is otherwise kinda average, meaning that I get bouts of dryness with these and after about 3,5 hours I find myself thinking that I might want to take them off. Bear in mind though that I have rather sensitive eyes, seemingly.
Lens photos ahead!
All photos taken by me during a May afternoon with a mostly clear sky. All close-up photos are free from color filters and such and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.
Facing window in my apartment.
Apartment roomlight. (lamp on)
White corridor light.
Yellow corridor light.
Dim yellow staircase light.
Indoors storage room. (natural light)
Outdoors with indirect sunlight, aka sitting under the roof/shadows.
Outdoors, back against sun. (facing wall)
Outdoors, facing sun.
I adore the color but I'd love it even more if it was a bit bolder. Now it feels like it blends in with my blue-gray eyes and thus loses some of its intensity, I don't know. For some reason I'm also thinking that these might 'pop' more on dark eyes. But whatever the case the color payoff is worthwhile because these do clearly make my eyes teal-ish although, for some reason, it seems like the camera catches the color slightly better because they don't always look this vivid in real life. :/ Oh well, the design is the main selling point because it's seriously AMAZING and makes me want to purchase the Trinity lenses in other colors too!
Distance photo!
Because it's 4th May today I decided to throw together a
Star Wars inspired outfit for this lens review, hehehe ~
The design makes me think that these would be great for fantasy fashion looks like maybe something inspired by Alice in Wonderland– I can also imagine that these would fit for some steampunk, fairy kei and likely some other j-fashion styles too! Actually, I see quite a lot of potential styles these would work for and I'd recommend anyone interested to try the Trinity series because the print really is something extraordinary!
Short summary:
Color: 8/10
Beautiful teal color but I somehow wish it was even more bright and intense.
Design: 10/10
Beautifully detailed print that makes me think about some fairytale castle!
Opacity: 7/10
Fairly opaque, but in some poorer lights they lose their vibrancy and seem to blend into my light eyes.
Enlargement: 8/10
Notable enlargement effect but it's not overwhelming.
Comfort: 6/10
Average. They feel a bit stingy direct after insertion but my eyes get used to them fairly fast. Start to feel dry after approximately 3,5 hours on my sensitive eyes.
Naturalness: 5/10
Despite having an intricate pattern and being teal these don't jump out as much as one might expect.
 Thanks for checking out this review! ^.^
[Sponsored] CosplaySky review: Touken Ranbu Tsurumaru Kuninaga cosplay costume!
Hello there all awesome geeks and cosplay fans! ヽ(*´∀`)ノ゙
I have some exciting news to share! An online cosplay shop called CosplaySky contacted me a while ago and asked if I was interested in reviewing one of their costumes. I was super excited!
I've been oogling their site for over a year now and some of my friends had bought from them before so yeah, I had gotten prior non-biased knowledge that they were a trustable and good quality online shop! Needless to say that I was so so happy when they wanted to sponsor me a costume for review purposes!
For those that do not know – CosplaySky is a big, established and well-known online costume store that has been around for a while and is selling mainly cosplay costumes, but also props and wigs for affordable prices. They sport a handsome collection of costumes ranging from TV-series to movies and all the way to anime, Vocaloids and even video games!
My reviews are always 100% my genuine opinion, no matter if the items were sponsored or bought with my own money. I never compromise my honesty and true thoughts to my readers.
With all of that said I want to welcome you to a really detailed, full and honest review of CosplaySky! I hope you will find it helpful and feel free to leave a comment if you have any questions after you're done reading! ^_^ Let's go ~
I also want to sincerely apologize for how horribly late this review is posted; I've been super busy with school, hospital visits etc. I've also had a lot of issues with getting good weather when a photographer actually was available (to get the fullbody photos). ;-; I hope you can understand.
~ "Forewords" ~
I feel like I should mention that personally I am very picky when I browse online cosplay costume shops – I have a habit of always scrutinizing even the smallest details (I'm a perfectionist!) and comparing them with official reference photos to see how accurate they really are. I do often try to find the most accurately made costume possible but I also keep realistic expectations in mind – you can't get something that's 100% accurate, well-made and with high-end quality fabrics for cheap. The simple and often true saying of "you get what you pay for"is something that I always keep in mind. :)
Most cosplayers do agree on that quality goes before price, meaning that they are willing to pay more for a nicer costume and yes, I am one of those too. I do believe though that CosplaySky has a fair price versus quality standard, meaning that considering the price you pay you do get some surprisingly solid and good-looking costumes! There might be a few flaws but it's really nothing that detracts from the costume as a whole.
~ Contact, packaging and shipping ~
Okay so, CosplaySky contacted me on 25th December last year and asked for my interest to review a costume from them – my answer you know already because I'm writing this post, haha. I took a look at their online store and I must say that it was really hard to decide on what costume to pick! So many tempting ones! *A* In the end I decided to give in to my current swordboy craze and so I chose the Tsurumaru Kuninaga cosplay costume from the popular Touken Ranbu online browser game.
I don't know when exactly they began the making of the costume but it would make sense if the dates set on my costume information sheet, that came with the package, were the start and end dates; I can't say for sure since I can't read Chinese/kanji but yeah, it would mean that the costume was started on 31st December and finished on 7th January – that's pretty dang fast!
Regarding shipping I got a slower option than the default one on the site (which is crazy fast, by the way) but it didn't really matter for me since I wasn't in a super hurry. CosplaySky said that shipping would take a couple weeks and that held true; it arrived in my country on the 28th January, if I recall correctly.
I went to pick up the package on 30th January and I must say that I had severely underestimated the size of the package. xD I went to pick it up with the thought that it would fit into my shoulder bag (it's one of those that fits a laptop and all your school stuff) but lolnope, when I saw the huge cardboard box it was obvious that my bag would need to triple in size to fit it, lol!
I walked home with the huge cardboard box – I felt like a kid on Christmas Eve! (╯✧∇✧)╯ I opened the box and was met by... another box. The second cardboard box was a lot flatter and smaller though and it was obvious that the armors were inside it, for protection. Good choice!
The costume itself was in one of those nice-looking costume bags (one side clear plastic and other side some kind of rough fabric with small holes) with a plastic zipper to open it. The actual costume was nicely folded inside the bag. With the costume also came the aforementioned costume information paper sheet that had a stock photo of the chosen costume, my included custom measurements with their modification scribbles added on top (very handy!) and identification barcodes, along with my country and other information in Chinese that I can't make out. I still can't read Chinese.
Shows the costume bag and the cardboard
box that the armors came in.
~ Costume thoughts, fabrics and sewing quality ~
My first thought when I pulled out the costume from the bag was that the fabric felt quite nice. On the store it says that the fabric is "uniform cloth" (which is a very common term used in costume online shops) but it feels like a medium to lightweight synthetic fabric, likely polyester or a polycotton blend maybe polyester twill. The fabric is smooth and matte but it seems to be of the kind that, once wrinkled, the wrinkles will be there until you iron them away. There is no stretch/elasticity to the fabric, save for the gloves which are made of some kind of tricot fabric.
Regarding the sewing it seems to be sturdy and I don't feel like it will rip or that a seam will tear when I wear the costume and do those daily things that humans do. The stitching is straight, neat and doesn't do any weird jumps and the threads used are always of a matching color etc. There were some loose threads poking out of some seams but those were super easy to just cut off.
One thing that I noticed early though, that just made me confused as of why anyone would ever skip such an important part of sewing, was that seemingly all seams that are hidden by lining are left completely raw and untreated?! I was shocked when I saw it. ∑(;°Д°) I honestly didn't expect it at all!
I understand wanting to cut corners out of laziness (or lack of time) because it's being covered and thus won't show on the outside but hey, it's important for the long-term durability as well. Sealing the raw edges really shouldn't be skipped, no matter what.
I just don't understand since I was taught from a very early age that it's an essential and very important thing to seal the edges, unless of course you're sewing some kind of fabric that simply can't fray like leather, for example.
I'll admit though that I might not have noticed it at all if I had picked a costume that wasn't mostly white but yeah, the thing is that with white fabrics the "inside" easily shines through (especially on thinner fabrics) and you don't even necessarily need to hold the clothing piece next to a light source to reveal it; I actually noticed it completely by random chance because I saw a lone loose thread in a place that wasn't close to any seams and then I decided to check the actual seams and was met with an untamed jungle of fraying threads. It's unprofessional and it just makes me wonder why a big established business would do such a thing? ლ(´Д`ლ)
Good thing at least is that the fraying edges don't show when the costume is worn but yeah, it doesn't magically make the problem disappear either I know that they are there and it bothers me. :/
I also worry that if I wear the costume a lot then the edges might fray enough that I will eventually have to take off the lining and correct what was left undone. Then again, most times you don't wear a costume as often as everyday clothing so yeah, it might not even get to that point for many...
"Hidden" non-treated fraying edges.
I'd feel like I was lying if I kept quiet because I can't pretend that I didn't notice the raw edges early on and, besides, I think this is important enough to mention and I hope CosplaySky would change their ways (although I can't assume that they always skip this part of sewing) ignoring to treat the raw edges is unforgivable and is a blow to the overall quality, sadly. :/ It's such a quick, basic and important part of sewing that there really is no reason not to do it; it's crucial for the durability of the costume, general neatness and to uphold a professional image. I seriously hope they don't purposely add the lining just to skip treating the raw edges but, if that's the case, then I'd take the costume without the lining any day. Even things that don't show on the outside do count.
I honestly feel a bit bad for bringing this up since this is a sponsored costume review but yeah, it's very very important for me to tell the truth in my reviews, in both good as well as in less good. I always thought that those flawless "everything's perfect 5/5 love it!" sponsored reviews some others do seemed overly fake and thus were not actually trustable nor helpful so yeah, I don't want to be one of them; I value honesty the most when reviewing.
~ Detailed description of costume parts ~
Additional information: I am someone knowledgeabe about authentic traditional Japanese clothes and their basic construction, since I collect and wear wafuku as a hobby and have a great passion for them you can check my kimono blog for proof. I am very aware that it's probably close to impossible to find an online costume store selling kimono, hakama, haori etc that is sewn traditionally and/or "correctly". I have browsed countless costume stores and never saw a cosplay kimono with an okumi panel and no shoulder seams, for example. With this said I want to mention that CosplaySky is no different, but it's all okay since their stock photos show the costumes very accurately you can see in advance what you will get. :)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note: All detail photos below show the clothing pieces in their original condition, aka before I did any modifications. Some costume parts I needed to modify slightly (pants, belt, gloves, necklace) for a better fit.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Kimono-style top: I say styled because while it looks the part it's not constructed as an authentic kimono should be, as mentioned above – aka it has shoulder seams, no okumi panel and no back seam. This piece of clothing is actually fairly similar to a keikogi on some points though, so yeah, if you ever did martial arts like kendo or karate you know what I mean. :) Basically this is a short (hip length) wrap-around kimono-styled top with roomy "western sleeves" (non-square sleeves with fully open arm opening) and with a silk tie to keep it closed at the lower waist. The top is fully lined too. Oh and yeah, the sleeves are actually supposed to be shaped like that (aka non-traditional), surprisingly enough. Another thing is that because the top is lined it's very slippery so you might want to use an additional sash to keep the lower half in place (since the silk tie doesn't do much) and, more importantly, you will very likely need to use either a safety pin or double-sided tape to keep both collars where they should be – they seriously move around a lot.
Silk tie to keep it closed. (I tied a ribbon knot for demonstration)
The blue collar is sewn on to the white collar, to give the illusion of a second layer, but I personally would have wished for it to be a bit longer, aka run down the whole length of the white collar. It's actually very short and, while this is not a problem for Tsurumaru because of how he's (properly) dressed, it doesn't give you any option to wear the collars crossed lower down since the blue collar is too short to accomodate it. So yeah, basically saying that if you want to do fanservice photos then you're screwed, lol.
Showing the blue collar that is attached to the inside.
The ends are left unattached! (it's a good thing, see text below)
A good thing with the blue collar is that approximately 5 centimeters on each end is left unattached so that you can cross them in a way so that the blue collar is hidden under the white collar properly and not suddenly, you know, ending on top of it.
One thing to note is that what is supposed to be the "inner blue sleeves" are actually just a blue fabric sewn to the ends of the white sleeves, aka it looks the same as what you see on all those online Bleach shinigami costumes with a white trim running along the sleeve's mouth/opening and then there's black inside the sleeve. Personally I would much have preferred that there would have been an actual fake layer beneath, in the sense that there would have been a blue sleeve attached together where the white sleeve is attached to the body to give a 2-in-1 sleeve look I hope I make sense!
But yeah, I was 95% expecting it to be just a "blue trim" so it's not like I'm disappointed or anything. :D
Sleeve.
Hakama-style pants: Again I'm using the "-styled" addition as a way to make a difference that, while these look like hakama on a first glance when worn, they are not constructed like one at all. This is basically a pair of very wide pleated pants with a zipper in the middle (it's hidden once the belt goes on) and a low crotch. All the signature traits that makes a hakama a, well, hakama, are missing: side openings, long ties (himo) and the backboard (koshiita). These hakama-like pants basically look like what would be the outcome if your western pants and your hakama had a child, haha!
Showing the top and the hidden zipper.
The pants when worn, with belt on top.
(excuse my nerdy Angry Birds slippers)
They look pretty cool when worn and I definitely appreciate that the white parts aren't just flaps that you velcro in place at the top (I've seen that on other online Tsurumaru costumes and it bothers me). The white parts aren't actually attached to the gray part though it's like, imagine that the white parts are like two rectangular capes hanging over each leg of the gray inner "hakama". That's how it is and yes, it's only attached at the top which means that the rest hangs freely.
A small mention about the "hakama" fabric is that while the white parts are lined the gray insides are not; this basically means that the gray fabric feels thinner (even though it's the same thickness) and because the pleats are not starched or stitched in place they will likely disappear after prolonged wear, unless ironed regularly.
I, by the way, tried to wear the "hakama" so that I'd tuck the pant legs into my split-toe (tabi) socks but it didn't work out for me, mainly because the tube part of my shoes are too narrow so that I couldn't close the zipper after all the extra fabric was there.
I had to modify the pants slightly by adding elastics to the top and bottom so that they would gather below my knees and fit me a bit better.
Belt: The belt that comes with the costume is an one-piece with an easy velcro closure at the back. All the details including the cross tie are sewn on. As a side-note I want to mention that the cross tie might look complicated and fancy but it's actually possible to tie in real life it's worn with hakama for a formal look. I don't know if I just got a more carelessly sewn than usual version but it bothers me slightly that the tie ends are all sewn on in a way so that none of them are the same length; it's a small thing, yes, but I would have hoped for it to be symmetrical since I know that it's worn in real life for high-end looks and thus should be neat and as perfect as possible.
I did take in the belt some centimeters because it was a bit too big for me, I also centered the knot while I was at it. The knot on the belt actually consists of several short separate pieces that are just sewn, on top of each other, in the right positions.
Belt, unmodified.
Hooded cloak: This thing is seriously so so beautiful – it's exactly what I hoped for! It's by far the highlight of the whole costume and I love it so much that I'd want to wear it everyday. ヽ(´ω`○)ノ.+゚*。:゚+
It's fully lined with really long wide square sleeves and golden chains that make a lovely soft rustling sound when I move! I love it loads. ♥ The hood is great too and that little fluffy ball on the right breast is very soft and attached securely.
Oh and yeah, the chains are attached by a little string of white thread that is tied on the cloak's body this means that, if needed, you can easily move and relocate the chains by just cutting the string that holds them in place and hand-sewing on a new string on another location; I actually cut off the string holding the chain on the back because it has been revealed in the art book (and the Tsurumaru figure) that the chain hangs freely on his back.
Original positioning of the chains on the cloak. View from backside.
As an extra tip, for those interested, I can say that if you want to be reaaaaally accurate you can modify the square sleeves so that they have the right shape, as shown in the art book to be a really pointy elongated triangle something like this: .
Embroidered emblem "brooch": Even though this is a detail of the cloak I'm listing it separately since it wasn't attached to the cloak by default. It's basically an embroidered patch with Tsurumaru's signature emblem (kamon) on it. There's a safety pin in the back to attach it to the cloak but I need to mention though that the tiny metallic cap that keeps the pin closed came off when I accidentally, very lightly, brushed my hand against it when I moved stuff around. Luckily it was easy to put back in place but yeah, seems like the safety pin is not of the best quality since I honestly barely touched the pin and it came offand I hadn't even used it yet. Then again, it shouldn't be a problem to repair/replace so it's nothing to fret about, really.
The embroidery is nicely made, it looks clean and has no loose threads etc. :) The only thing I would have wished for would have been that the patch itself had something under it a supporting layer, sort of so that it would be a bit more sturdy, aka less soft and floppy. It's no big deal though.
Embroidered emblem, front and back.
Chain necklace: At first I didn't realize that the necklace was a separate part because it came attached to the safety pin of the emblem; I originally thought that it belonged to the emblem. Derp. The necklace consists of a golden chain that's smaller than those that are on the cloak. It has two additional short hanging ends in the front. It's really simple but it looks fine.
The only problem is that there is no way to open it (there's no locking system like on normal necklaces!) so yeah, unless your head circumference is ridiculously small then there's no way to put it on – and by small I mean that your head would need to be smaller than 45 cm in circumference. I have a bigger head than average, sizing in at approximately 60 cm around so yeah, there was no way that I'd be able to put it on over my head without having to get some tools, open the ring link and either add a proper closure system in the back (so that I can put it on directly at neck level) or do some other quick-fix solution, like adding an elastic thread. I don't understand though why there was no closure system whatsoever because really, who has a head that small? :S
Tsurumaru's necklace.
Gloves: The gloves are made of some kind of fairly thin, soft elastic material that is likely some kind of tricot, I think. The gloves consist of two parts – the glove itself and an accompanying "wrist band" of the same fabric. They look like they should, except that the wrist bands are missing the thin white border on the other end, but that's a really minor detail and I'd be nitpicking if I put much weight on it. Actually, I didn't even know about it myself until I checked my reference photos closely, lol.
I did modify the gloves a little (after the photo was taken of course) to have a more precise fit for me since I have small hands for a man and, well, I forgot to specify that. That's probably my fault, haha.
Gloves and "wrist bands". (before modification)
Armors: I'll be honest – the armors don't look like I expected them to, based on the stock photos. While you can still obviously tell that they are Tsurumaru's they are made differently and of different materials than what the costume image suggests on CosplaySky's site. On the images of the store it looks really nicely made and the material seems to look like some kind of sturdier plastic, I don't know? The armors that I received –while they look okay from a distance– they don't quite hold up to a closer check. The blue base seems to be some kind of really stiff and durable cardboard-like material (I seriously don't know what it actually is, forgive me) but the details are definitely white craft foam that has been painted gold and, quite frankly, give a cheap impression when looked at closer. :/
These are not that bad (they are definitely usable) but I just want to say that the thing is that I wouldn't have been as disappointed if the stock photo had shown the actual product. It's just that my expectations weren't met. ^^" I would have appreciated these a lot more if the stock photo hadn't been misleading because it showed something that looked to be of better quality.
Armors. The white strings are so that you can attach them
to the belt, for example.
The armors consist of several pieces layered together, as they should, but I did notice that they break really easily; I actually broke one of them before I even got out of my apartment with the costume on! D: I accidentally bumped my side into the bed and the blue parts just cracked off clean from the top golden part. The thing is that it was a smaller hit it can be compared to the same impact you'd get if you were standing in a crowd and someone pushes you enough so that you lose your balance but not enough to make you fall. Yeaaaah. But luckily, because it broke off so cleanly, it was super easy to just hot glue back in place without a trace that it had ever broken. Needless to say you need to be very careful with these because they are not very sturdy/durable at all, sadly. Avoid crammed places and yeah, if you trip or something you can be pretty sure that at least one of them will suffer some damage. I also want to note that, once when I was outside, I actually heard a loud creaking noise from the armors simply because the wind was toying with them. Please note though that the wind was blowing at 8 meters per second at most so yeah, the wind alone could technically have broken them off, if I had not held them tightly flat against my legs during all of the sudden gusts...
What drops the grade as well is that the chains hanging from the ends are just simple craft foam cut-outs. On the stock photos the chains look like the same golden chains that are on the cloak (which are seriously amazing) and I was really expecting the chains on the armors to match. But hey, nothing stops you from buying some golden chains yourself and replacing them; there is already a little string that you can attach the chains to!
Another small thing is that those little square dots are craft foam too, even though they should in reality be some kind of lacing and they do look like lacing on the stock photos.
Oh and yeah, these armors are heavy enough that you need to wear a support belt (I used a normal leather belt) under the costume's belt-piece to hold them in place, otherwise they will drag down the costume belt and it won't look good.
The armors are the only part of the whole costume that actually differs from the stock photo examples on the site, which means that I'd grade the "RECEIVED COSTUME VS. STOCK PHOTO ACCURACY" to be a HIGHLY RESPECTABLE90%!! The 10% drop is for the armors only everything else looks just like advertised.
You can buy with confidence from CosplaySky– what you see is very close to what you will get, at least based on my experiences!
CosplaySky store & Tsurumaru Kuninaga costume rundown Pros and cons:
+ Decent fabric choices
+ Very accurate to store's stock photos
+ Mostly accurate to character*
+ Sewing quality is mostly good and consistent
+ Quick processing & making time
+ Shipping time as promised
+ Safe and good packaging
+ Professional and kind customer service
+ Affordable prices
+/- Some costume parts were too big (note: custom size)
- Fabric edges that are hidden by the lining are raw/untreated
- Armor is different from stock photos
- Necklace is way too small to fit over head (no closure system)
* = there are some minor differences, especially if you own the Touken Ranbu art book that shows Tsurumaru's outfit(s) in angles that were previously unseen. The main differences are the shape of the cloak's sleeves, how the chain goes in the back, some small details in general and the backside of the belt.
~ Sizing ~
I want to mention it separately that my costume was made in custom size, which costs a bit extra. What I want to say with this is that while most of the costume had a good fit there were a couple clothing items that I needed to take in a bit it's nothing big though. The reason I put it as both a plus and a minus is because although some pieces were too big (except for the necklace which was too small) I would any day rather have a costume that is too big than one that is too small; it's easy to make a big costume smaller but it's really hard to make a small costume bigger. ;)
I also want to say that CosplaySky does add additional centimeters to your provided measurements (it even shows how much on the paper sheet that came with!) so yeah, you should NOT add extra centimeters to your actual measurements!
My measures might have changed a bit since I wrote them down but yeah, I mainly made the belt a bit smaller since originally it was so big that I could drop it over my head and it would fall to the floor with no resistance, lol. I also added an elastic ribbon to the top of the pants so that they'd fit me on the waist rather than really low on my hips; I added elastics to the bottom of each pant leg too, to gather the fabric below my knees. The gloves I also did some small alterations on so that they'd be more flattering. The necklace I just decided to open up with pliers and I added a small elastic ribbon to the back for closing. The cloak and kimono-style top fit me perfectly as is.
~ Conclusion and final thoughts ~
Okay, so to conclude this review I want to make it clear that, contrary to what it perhaps might seem, I am indeed very happy with the costume that I received and I'm overall super pleased with CosplaySky!! ♡ I really enjoyed this collaboration with them and I'd definitely feel safe ordering from their store in the future!
Almost all of the cons that I bring up are, in fact, mostly minor and/or easily fixable if you just have a sewing machine and some basic tools so yeah, even though there were quite some stuff to modify I was expecting it and it was nothing hard to do either. (*^ω^*) The only bigger issues is that the armors aren't really durable, nor identical, with the stock photos and that the seams that are hidden by the lining are not treated to avoid fraying at all. But, if we look past those two weaker performances, what we have at hand is a solid cosplay costume store that has been around for years and that delivers fair quality costumes that are mostly highly accurate to their photos for a reasonable and competitive price and fast turnaround time. Just be aware that you'll likely need to do some smaller modifications and/or repairs yourself, for a perfect fit. Oh and yeah, their costumes can also serve as good 'bases' for those who like to buy premade stuff and then modify it to their hearts content!
I'd definitely feel safe recommending CosplaySky to all my cosplaying friends who are looking for a reputable online costume store with decent quality and good value! They are also really fast so yeah, if you ever need a costume in a rush then this store is a very good candidate to consider for your needs. They even take rush orders for a small extra charge!
Final Grade (from A-F): B
Recommend to others: Yes
I think that's about all that I had to say! See you in my next blog post and thank you for reading! I hope this was helpful ~
Also, don't forget to check out CosplaySky if you want to buy a costume or know someone else who does! ^_^ A separate Tsurumaru photoshoot post is coming up soon so stay tuned!
A biiiiig thank you goes out to CosplaySky for making this possible!
I just want to say a few words about this costume as well! ^.-
It's really nice and comfortable to wear, except that the kimono top is a bit slippery and needs some safety pins (or double-sided tape) to stay properly in place, haha. I also had to do some small modifications to make some costume parts fit me better – nothing hard to do! Overall I'm really pleased with this costume and I'd warmly recommend CosplaySky to my fellow cosplayers and costuming fans alike!
Pssst, be sure to check out my detailed and 100% honest review about them here ~
~ Bonus photo ~
#thuglife #sorrynotsorry
The story behind this picture is that it was originally from another earlier photoshoot (the first one, since this current shoot was actually the second try) me and Frozen Angel had... or well, tried to have. I have different makeup too. The thing is that it fell through because of a strong wind of approximately 8 meters per second; the wind tossed my wig out of place all the time and it almost broke my armors too! D: We had to quit the shooting because it just didn't work out and yeah, ironically the only "useful" photo we managed to get was this silly thug!Tsurumaru. xD It was completely unintentional, lol. Can't be serious all the time ~
That's all I have to say for this time! Thanks for reading my blog!
A big thank you also goes to CosplaySky for sponsoring me!
Lens review: Kimchi Kiss Gold
Hello peeps!
Today I'll review the cool Kimchi Kiss Gold lenses! ヾ(≧∇≦*)ゝThe yellow color doesn't always show up as brightly as one might hope but it does make my eyes appear some sort of mango color, haha. It's a pretty lens!
Let's start the review!
Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 16 mm
Water content: 55%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)
These lenses sport a really unique design that sets them apart from the masses! I don't know why they are called Kimchi Kiss because to me the pattern looks like a fancy star, haha. I really like the design and wish it came in more colors because it's only available in gold, gray, pink, violet and blue – I'd seriously want to see these in red or green. *_* The black limbal ring is kinda thick too and it gives a cute enlarging effect!
One lens in.
As per usual with Kimchi lenses these are fairly big as well, not humongously big but the enlargement is big enough that it's easy to notice. These lenses don't really look good without eye makeup by the way, just a warning!
I need to say that regarding comfort these are hella comfy! I put them into my eyes no problem and I didn't feel them at all from the first second. I even biked outside with my brother to go eat some hamburgers and I had to ask him along the way if I still had my lenses on, lol. xD I swear it didn't even feel like I was wearing lenses! These lenses don't hinder my vision or anything but I felt that occasionally there was a very slight blur, especially when my eyes got tired (I wore these late into the night). I managed to wear these for 4,5 hours before they started to feel a bit dry and a little bit before 5 hours I decided to take them off.
Lens photos ahead!
All photos taken by me during a partially cloudy May evening.
There's no color filters or such on the close-up photos and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.
Facing window in my apartment.
Apartment room light. (standing next to lamp)
Flash photo.
Bathroom light.
Yellow corridor light.
Dim yellow light in staircase.
Orange-ish light in the staircase. (with natural light behind me)
Indoors storage room. (natural light from the side)
Outdoors, back against light.
Outdoors, indirectly facing light. (aka sitting under the shadows/roof)
Outdoors, facing light. (cloudy)
Bonus! Facing bright sunset outdoors with no makeup.
The color definitely shows up as yellow/gold but it's not as vibrant as I might have hoped; it's still pretty but when viewed from a distance it makes my light blue-gray lenses appear honey or perhaps light tea colored? I don't know how to describe the color. ^^" I guess the amount of black streaks also adds to the impression that the lenses appear darker when viewed from a distance. In brighter lights they do stand out more but yeah, on cloudy days they don't show their best side. Nevertheless, it's a beautiful lens.
Distance photo!
Short summary:
Color: 7/10
These lenses are yellow but aren't super bright; ends up looking honey/tea colored in average light conditions.
Design: 9/10
Really pretty and unique star-like pattern with bold black streaks!
Opacity: 7/10
Pretty good, since yellow lenses that show up decently aren't all that common. They blend surprisingly well though.
Enlargement: 8/10
These appear bigger than some other Kimchi lenses I've had, possibly because of the thicker limbal ring.
Comfort: 8/10
Really good! I don't even feel that I have lenses on! I can wear them for approximately 5 hours before they start to feel dry.
Naturalness: 4/10
The blending effect makes them natural-ish but yeah, yellow/golden color combined with that fancy pattern is obviously contact lenses...
Thank you for reading! I hope this review was helpful! o(*゚▽゚*)o
Lens review: Kimchi Misty Blue
Yobedooo~
Circle lens review day today! :) Today I'll be showing you the Kimchi Misty Blue lenses, which are actually prettier than one might first think! Personally I've grown really fond of this pair, especially because of the beautiful design which is surprisingly versatile in its uses!
But now, review time!
Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 16 mm
Water content: 55%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)
Lens to the watcher's right shows wrong side out.
In the vials the lenses appear as a darkish blue with, perhaps, some minor hints of violet. The color is really pretty and the design, although the series is called Misty, looks much more crystal inspired. The design is irregular and kinda jagged, yet graceful and with an air of mystique and depth to them. The lenses have quite some black too so they are sure to appear a bit darker when actually worn – but nevertheless they will look beautiful on any eye colors, I'm pretty sure.
One lens in.
As you can see the enlargement boost is there but it's, surprisingly enough, not as big as I maybe expected. I'm used to both Kimchi and I.Fairy lenses always being bigger than average but this pair doesn't feel overwhelmingly big at all – I'm assuming the lack of a thick limbal ring adds to the impression, although the lenses do have a small black ring for definition.
These lenses felt very very slightly uncomfortable when I first put them in but that feeling went away quickly. I noticed that when I blinked my eyes did those squirty "eye sounds" for quite some time and I guess that might just be because my eyes were trying to get used to the lenses being there. You know, that sound and feeling when you blink and just when your eyelids pass by/touch the contacts... :') lol best description ever, 10/10.
Comfort is kinda average but please, don't take this for granted since my lenses were to expire this summer (had I not opened them) and I have sensitive eyes anyway. For me they actually started to give the first hints of dryness already around 1 hour of wear and after 2-3 hours I considered taking them off a couple of times. These lenses keep alternating between waves of dryness and then suddenly feeling comfy again!
Lens photos ahead!
All photos taken by me during a May afternoon with a semi-cloudy sky.
There's no color filters or such on the close-up photos and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.
Facing window in my apartment, cloudy.
Outdoors, facing light (cloudy) but being under the roof/shadow.
The blue color is deep and surprisingly intense, even though the design has many black portions in it. I honestly expected that the black would "dull down" the blue's vibrancy but it did not – and that's amazing! I really love the shade of blue because it makes my eyes look serene and fairytale-esque. ♥ The Misty Blue makes my eyes look crystalline and it's seriously super pretty!
Distance photo!
It's a really graceful cosmetic circle lens with a magical flair that, despite its intricate print, works just as well for more casual looks as well as cosplay and j-fashion. I'm actually positively surprised by how well these lend themselves to everyday looks with minimal makeup! Needless to say it's a very versatile and multi-purpose circle lens that can see a lot of use with many different people. :)
These colored contact lenses enhance my light blue-gray eyes and make my peepers fit into that perfect middleground between fantasy and passable for everyday! I love these and I'm sure they would look dazzling on brown eyes too ~
Short summary:
Color: 9/10
Beautiful deep blue color that has great vibrancy, despite the amount of black in the print.
Design: 9/10
Gorgeous crystal-like design with irregular edges. Gives a magical and graceful flair.
Opacity: 8/10
The colored parts are surprisingly covering. The "blending line" is discreet as well.
Enlargement: 7/10
For being a Kimchi lens these don't feel all that big.
Comfort: 6/10
Rather average. Start to feel dry after a couple hours but this could very well be because my lenses were to expire this summer, had I not opened them.
Naturalness: 6/10
The detailed print is a definite 'tell' but otherwise these are suitable for more natural looks!
Thank you for reading my contact lens reviews!
Lens review: Vassen Bambi Green
$
Hello people!
Time for another circle lens review! I'm gonna review the Vassen Bambi Green lenses, also sometimes known as Vassen Bambi Queen Green. ^^ These should be the same lenses as the Kimchi Bambi Green as well, since Vassen is the company that manufactures the lenses that both Kimchi and I.Fairy sell under their own brand.
But now, let's get on with the review!
Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 14.5 mm
Water content: 42%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)
If you've been spending some time with circle lenses you'll probably notice that these lenses look extremely similar to the super popular GEO Princess Mimi Apple Green lenses (I've reviewed them here)! I honestly first-hand bought these contact lenses just because I wanted to compare the two and see if they were actually identical or not – more about that later!
One lens in. Notice enlargement.
Okay, so the color is pleasantly vibrant and the green is actually a true green and not one of those greens that either disappears into your (light) eyes or that ends up looking all muddy and shit; they don't end up looking blue-ish/teal either – just simple real green and that's awesome. I'm assuming that these would show up well on dark eyes too and I like how they have yellow in the middle to make them appear a bit more natural; it also softens the color so that it doesn't clash with your real eye color.
The enlargement effect is definitely big enough that you won't miss it, but it's not so big that it would eat up my eyes. These lenses will definitely provide you with a dolly eye look, if you're looking for that, but I'd also say that these are quite versatile and I could see myself wearing them as a daily fashion lens, as well as for cosplay. :)
Lens photos ahead!
All photos taken by me during a May evening with a clear sky.
There's no color filters or such on the close-up photos and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.
I had no problems inserting these. I don't feel them much in my eyes because the lenses are quite thin, but I do experience some occasional dry bouts and minor itchiness; I've also had a few occasions when one lens suddenly blurred my vision for a couple seconds, nothing bad though. The first time I wore these my eyes had been watering and itching (likely because of the bright sun) before putting them on and I think that affected why I only managed to wear them for 2 hours before my eyes were like "take them out plz". Please notice though that I have sensitive and/or dry eyes. The second time I tried these I could feel that they started drying already after 30 minutes; I also found myself rubbing my eyelids and poking the inner corners of my eyes a lot. 1 hour in I'm blinking hard, keeping my eyes closed and really wanting to take the lenses off so yeah, I can't say anything else except that these dry way too fast for me. :( Then again, eyedrops would solve that problem!
Distance photos!
Okay so, these lenses are overall really likable; the design is quite simple but that makes them really versatile and yeah, the color is definitely bright enough that if you like green lenses you should give these a try! The Vassen Bambi Greens could be a cosplay lens, a j-fashion lens or even a fancy everyday lens! The only issue I have with these is that the comfort is lacking, for me at leaast.
And here comes the bonus comparison photo I took to show how the GEO Princess Mimi Apple Green and the Vassen Bambi Green differs from one another! At first the Vassen Bambi Green seems like a rip-off but there's actually a fairly notable color difference!
Short summary:
Color: 9/10
Beautiful true green lenses! The color shows up well and it's quite vibrant!
Design: 8/10
Beautiful and versatile design that makes your eyes look full of life!
Opacity: 8/10
These change my eye color, no doubt.
Enlargement: 8/10
These are big but not so big that I couldn't wear them for daily looks as well.
Comfort: 4/10
Below average. Not really uncomfortable per se but they dry out really fast for me.
Naturalness: 4/10
These are not as natural looking as the Princess Mimis because of the brighter color and the yellow inner ring.
Thanks for reading my circle lens reviews! ^.^
