Making Kojirou's not-so-identical tekkou!

Hello everyone, how's it going? :)

During the final days of April I went to buy some fabric to make Kojirou's tekkou, aka hand guards. I had luck with me this time and Eurokangas had everything that I needed – black fake leather, dark brown fake leather and golden bias tape!

Fabrics!
Now you're probably thinking something along the lines of "what Kojirou?" and that's right, the name is a historical one and he was a famous swordsman living during the Sengoku and early Edo period; he was most known for having battled Musashi Miyamoto.
Though the Kojirou I'm cosplaying is one from a visual novel and on this one he is a faithful bodyguard of Hana-hime, the main heroine.

I was studying my limited references and after staring at them long enough it became clear to me that his tekkou were slightly different on each arm, for some reason. At first I had thought that it was just inconsistent references being at it again (as always), but, after some closer inspection I did notice that they were indeed different. Wut.
Oh well ~

I jumped over to the textile/hand-working class in school to make these because hey, my apartment is way too small for a sewing machine... and I don't even have one anyway.
The first lesson I had at 29th April and what I did first was draft my base pattern with the help of a tekkou I already had saved me some trouble. I then did some modifications on the pattern and –when it seemed like it might even turn into something that works– I made a quick prototype out of fabric scraps to check the fit. It fit!
Sure that it was a bit loose but seeing how it will be made of fake leather (that doesn't stretch) and there will be a folded kimono sleeve and wrappings under, I, well, thought it better to make it a bit more roomy.
With the prototype working I cut out the parts from the black leather.. and that was when I noticed my first problem – I had miscalculated the width of the tekkou and thus I was a few centimeters short. Oh well, nothing much to do than cut it out anyway and pray that the few centimeters weren't a deal-breaker.

After having cut out the leather pieces I sewed on the golden bias tape around the edges. Of course this was a troublesome episode I had to rip up my stitches and redo three times, always because it didn't attach on the opposite side. Blargh!
I have a love-hate relationship with bias tape...

Bias tape, I love sewing you so....... not.
One tekkou bias tape'd, other one still au natural.
Next I added the golden fake leather to make the thicker "rings" around the tekkou's upper half. After that I sewed one of the tekkou shut (aka so it takes the tube form) and then I proceeded to make the brown leather details that are on the lower half of his tekkou.

This is the best picture I found that shows what the hand guards
look like on the underside.
After looking at the references for a short moment I got an idea of how to do them. Let's start!

I started taking some measurements and then drafting out the design on the wrong side of the leather fabric. I then just cut them out and shortened each piece a bit because 35-36 cm in length was a bit too much. When doing the shortenings I accidentally cut one piece too short, or more like, each end wasn't even at one point, even though I swear to God I cut the same off on both sides! After a moment of "what the hell went wrong and where??" I noticed that it wasn't my fault – the person who sold me the fabric had cut horribly non-straight. Urgh. ._. Yep, so I had to redo one of the pieces (the thickest, aka solo one).
I added bias tape to the needed areas again – this time it went smoothly!

A lot of bias tape sewing later I ended up realizing that I didn't have enough bias tape to finish my stuff – off we go back to the fabric store to buy 60 cm more!

In progress... and out of bias tape, fffuuu.
When I was done with sewing on the bias tape I did the "closing systems" on the underside of the tekkou... yeah, out of bias tape too. I folded it in half, sew a straight stitch on top and then just sew it on at each end; the other end by hand. Oh, and speaking of which, I sacrificed some accuracy on these because if I had put two closing ties on each piece (especially on the double smaller ones) it would have looked too crammed/busy and so on the double pieces I put one tie per piece, instead of two.
After that I did some "attachment spots" by hand-sewing on strategical places so that the brown details will stay on the main body of the tekkou and thus be less of a hassle to put on and wear.

Brown details completed, feat. "closing system" on the underside.
Example of hand-sewn stitch to keep the details in place, at all times.
With that done I was almost finished! The only thing left was to make the little loop for the middle finger (which I made out of some solid fabric scraps) and hand-sew it on.

Finger loop done!
At this point I tried on the tekkou (it wasn't the first time) and for some reason it took me until now to realize that it was way too wide where my hand came out! Sure that I had made them bigger on purpose so that I can cram parts of the kimono sleeve –wrapped in bandages– under it, but still.
So what do I do? Take it in, of course! And of course because I did this by eye measurement (aka without measuring properly before) I ended up taking in too much at first and then I couldn't even get my hand through the opening... go me. ._. Luckily my oopsie run didn't leave too horrid holes in the leather, so I didn't ruin my almost-finished piece of work, phew.

Tekkou turned inside out, showing the original seam and the "take it in"-seam.
I repeated the process for the second tekkou and made sure not to accidentally sew a straight stitch on the brown detail parts (I had turned the whole thing inside out) because well, his tekkou are not identical and so the detail parts reach higher up on the other glove because there's two layers of them, overlapping slightly. I didn't want to do more silly mistakes and especially not because I had already stayed 30 min overtime in class and thus sacrificed half of my lunch break in school...

And now my tekkou are finished! o/

That's all for this post! Shiro Samurai out! :'D

Should I offer to do (paid) cosplay photoshoots at cons?

So yeah, what is this?
Well, it's exactly what it sounds like, but I'll explain anyway!

For a long time now I've been noticing that some of my friends, along with some other congoers have, along the years, been asking me to photograph their cosplays more and more often at cons. People seem to appreciate my photography skills, although I can't claim to be a professional or anything of the sort, but I'm not a camera-know-nothing either! I've gone a photography course in school (that I got the best possible grade in) and I don't really think that people constantly compliment my photos for no reason either.
I do have an artistic eye and I'm willing to try new and crazy ideas
to get good and unique shots – I mean, photography is a form of art as well!
Yep, so while most people know me as a cosplayer I am a photographer as well.

So yeah, the thought of doing some kind of more "official/public post" about the fact that I'm open for cosplay photography at cons has been lingering around in my head for months, maybe even years. Yep, I'm basically saying that it would very well be possible to hire me to be the camera man for you!
Just don't have any super unrealistic expectations I'm a hobbyist who loves photography, not a professional who does it for a living. At least not yet, hahah.
I can also offer to do the photo post-processing (aka editing) if you either can't do it or don't feel like doing it for whatever reason.

Just showing my current camera!
You can see a few photo examples of my work over at Hasakitsuki's and FankiKitsune's blogs etc. Don't take these as a limit to what I'm capable of though, just as general examples I can and am willing to try many new things, the sky's the limit! I'm constantly improving and trying to challenge myself! (note: all these photos were taken back when I only had the default Nikon 18-55mm f/3,5-5,6G lens)

I don't have any assistants though so it's a bit limited what I can do, because I assume that I'd be photographing alone most of the time. :/ It would be convenient to have an assistant... But nonetheless I'm all up for helping any cosplayers (everyone is welcome!) getting photos of their costumes and improving my camera skills along the way! Win-win!

But then... there is that last question, the one that is rather touchy to bring up should I or should I not charge for my service?

I've gotten the impression that there is quite a lot of talk about this and mostly in a negative tone. People, especially cosplayers, seemingly expect all photographers to always work for free (because their friends and some others photograph them for free) and if they charge then they are stupid or just not worth it. We photographers do find it fun to photograph but just because we enjoy it doesn't mean that we should always do it for free, now should we? It's kind of the same as expecting wig stylers/commissioners to style your cosplay wigs for free because they find it fun and are good at it. Same thing with art commissions etc. See where this is going?

In a way I feel like it's a bit too much to ask for any really proper payment because I don't have any high-class education or anything that would justify me charging money for my time and besides, most congoers are young people who probably don't really have much money to spend and might not be willing to pay a photographer...?
But at the same time I don't think it's all wrong to ask for a small sum ("vaivanpalkka" as we say in Finnish, if nothing else) for a photo session say, for example 5 € with a minimum duration of approximately 1 hour, or is it?
From a general standpoint the thing with paying a photographer is that they would be willing to shoot anyone, not just their best friends. So would I if you pay me I will photograph you to the best of my abilities, no matter if you started cosplay yesterday or if you've been at it for years; I won't shut down anyone's offer. I will also make sure that you like the outcome (aka taken photos) before I call it quit for the day.
Also, speaking generally again, if you pay it shows the photographer that you are serious, value their work and that you are interested in getting good photos of yourself and that you are damn likely to show up during the planned time too. And of course the photographer will "pay you back" by sending you the final photos in a timely manner, doing their best to make sure that both are satisfied etc. I think that charging a fee –even if it's a small one is a way to make a sort of contract that both the photographer and the cosplayer will do their best to make the experience as hassle-free and pleasant for both parties.

Sorry for this post being a bit fuzzy and all over the place, but I guess you understand what I'm trying to get at. >°< By the way, if you are curious there's a very good post here about why some cosplay photographers charge for their time and I think that it's definitely worth a read!

I really don't mean it to come off the wrong way; it's just that when you do your work it's nice to get something back in return – I think everyone agrees on that. It doesn't even have to be money! Yeah I know, it's not really my "work" because I am a hobby photographer but it's still something I pour my heart and passion into and I do make sure that everyone I take photos of is satisfied with the final product.. even if I end up standing behind the camera longer than planned.

I really want to hear your thoughts on this!
Should I charge for photoshooting someone or not and, if I should, how much do you think is a reasonable price for a non-pro/hobbyist/aspiring photographer?
Suggestions welcome don't be afraid to tell me what you have in mind! Would you be willing to pay a con/cosplay photographer in general, if at all? What reasons/criterias would you have?

Whatever the outcome is I am available, in case some cosplayer out there wants nice photos and doesn't have a camera savvy friend around and well, I happen to attend the same convention and they happen to read this. :) Just contact me either by commenting on this post or, preferably, by sending me an email. My contact email can be found to the left on the blog!

That's all for this time.
I would really appreciate any comments regarding this, even if spoken from a general standpoint and not targeted at me. :) I'd love to hear your opinions!
Depending a bit on what feedback I get I'll make a follow-up post.

Thank you for reading! Bai bai ~

Touken Ranbu uchiban cosplays, bits & pieces!

Hi there!

I've slowly started gathering stuff for some Touken Ranbu cosplays! Yes, I'm seriously in love with this online game (even though I haven't actually played it yet; blame shitty internet and a crashy laptop for that) and all the gorgeous character designs! There's way too many cool characters that I want to cosplay and so many are totally the style that I tend to gravitate towards when choosing cosplays anyway, agjhdfsjhahkj! ;w; I just... can't... stop... having horrible cosplay cravings towards Touken Ranbu, hnng!

Okay so, I've gone ahead and bought fabric for Mikazuki Munechika's uchiban (casual) outfit, namely for the yellow headband thingy. I've also bought fabric for the tasuki sleeve cord that both Kashuu Kiyomitsu and Yamato no Kami Yasusada have on their uchiban outfits as well. If anyone wonders what a tasuki is for it's to tie up the kimono sleeves so that they aren't in the way.

Fabrics!
I started making the sleeve tying.. well, tie, first. I took no progress photos because it's simple as hell.
I had bought like 26 cm of a 150 cm wide fabric and I cut it in half so that I got two 150 cm long strips. I then just zigzaged the edges, sewed one end of each piece together to get one 3 m long piece. Then I just folded it in half, ironed and sew the whole shebang closed. When done I ironed the whole shit once more so that it wouldn't twist itself like a retarded sausage, which it did before ironing.
The annoying thing was that even though this was a super simple thing to do I had ridiculous problems with the sewing machine I was using in school. I was using the oldest one and well, last time I used it it was kind to me but now... lolnoep. I had the needle breaking once, the thread getting pulled and snapping off in the middle of sewing God knows how many times and that's not even all! When I put the new sewing needle in place it literally just fell off (even though I had screwed it in place) and IT FELL INSIDE THE GODDAMN SEWING MACHINE. Yep, right through that tiny little hole under the presser. I was like "are you kidding me? ._." but nope, there it went and there it stayed! I even tried to lift the whole sewing machine (with the metal part removed, so that all the dust inside stared at me) and shake it, upside down, but the only thing that came out was an older already broken needle. Fudge muffins.

Finished tasuki being worn.
Seen from the back. Mirror photo, it's reversed!
I did cut the tasuki shorter by one meter before I took the photos; I realized when doing a test-run that there was way too much length to it and I couldn't hide it nicely.
I know that on the official art neither Kashuu nor Yamato have a visible knot in the front but hey, that's how it should be so I rolled with it.

Next I made Mikazuki's headband thingy.
Nothing special to say about this quick project either, except that I used fake leather for the emblem (that I stitched on) instead of fabric paint; the main reason for this because I had scrap pieces of fake leather lying around after making Kojirou's tekkou and well, I couldn't find the black fabric paint anywhere (if I even had any) and the school didn't have any either and well, I'm cheap.

Emblem leather cut-outs placed on the fabric, before being sewed on.
Enjoy the cellphone quality! :'D
Annoying thing was when I was done with the whole shit and held it up to look at it. Yep, that's totally when I saw that one damn loose thread was INSIDE THE FINISHED THING; I had somehow missed to brush it off like the rest. Hnggnhejgfdhjhd!!

You see that fucker? ლ(ಠ益ಠ)ლ
Yep, I had "inside problems" this turn around. OTL Sewing needle falling inside the sewing machine and loose thread inside my completed headband, geez...
Oh well, with the help of some mad ninja skills I managed to move the thread to the very edge of the headband so that it disappeared from view. Mad ninja skills include poking a needle through a spot before were I started stitching (to avoid having to undo the sewing) and moving the needle around repeatedly until the thread moved along with it. :'D enjoymyclumsyexplanations.com

Tried it on my head. Excuse my face, I have zero make-up on...
Yep, that's my Mikazuki wig which recently arrived; I just took it straight out of the bag and put it on my head. I will need to style it later – this is just a quickie to see how it fit with the headband.
At one point I was seriously worried that the headband would be too short to actually be possible to tie, but thankfully that wasn't the case. Even with the wig on it's still okay!

Actually my Yamato no Kami Yasusada wig arrived together with the Mikazuki wig and yep, this is totally why I'm actually wearing Yamato's outfit on the Mikazuki headband pic and the other pics. ;)
I did a super quick outfit test (aka zero make-up) to see what it would look like; I already had everything needed for his uchiban outfit now that the wig showed up, woop!

Sorry about my weird expression and that it's a mirror photo, I
was home alone. Enjoy the Wario cap in the background.
I took the wig straight out of the bag and put it on.
The white hair ribbon I have yet to add...
I guess this would count as some kind of closet cosplay because I had the hakama already from earlier cosplays (Kenshin & Hakuouki's Hijikata) and the kimono is from my vintage collection, aka my kimono kitsuke hobby. x) The scarf I stole borrowed from Hasakitsuki. Only the wig I needed to order and well, the tasuki I made. No shit, Sherlock.

Psst, I have a wig for Kashuu as well that arrived recently! I just might need to cut and style it a bit and, of course, add the white hair tie. But I'll save that for another post!

That's all for this time! Bub-bai ~

Kummacon 2015 – cosplay plans!

How's it going guys?

Remember how I implied earlier that Skecon would be my next convention? Well, that's not quite true anymore! ;)
You see, some time ago I was swimming around on the internet and then I happened to end up on Kummacon's website. Thing is that I already knew about this con... and I had completely forgotten about it, until now.
I guess that back when I first learned about it I just went like "oh, it's too close to Desucon so I can't be bothered" and then it left my brain completely, without a second thought. Now that it turned out that I didn't attend Desucon this year Kummacon suddenly turned a lot more interesting!
Sure that it's a one-day event but it's in Oulu (aka close, "only" ~100 km away), in the now familiar Valve building and my awesome aunt has informed that it's possible to stay at her place and BOOM – Kummacon, here I come!

I'm curious about Kummacon (lit. "weird con") because it's a new con that will be arranged for the first time this year – I'm always happy to see new geeky events sprouting in the north!
It's a mixed popular culture con so yep, there's the usual anime & manga and cosplay of course, but also board games, literature (Harry Potter books etc), television series & movies, comics and so on.
Kummacon welcomes both Japanese pop culture along with western fandoms, in other words – there's even space for zombie fans and other fabulous weirdos! ;)

...
But yeah, now to the cosplay plans!

At first I thought that I'd just do some random fancy non-cosplay outfit but, the more I thought about it the more I started feeling like I wanted to cosplay, after all. Been having a lot of on an off cosplay feelings lately. A quick thought about possible cosplay candidates (recycle edition) first ended up with Battousai version Kenshin, mainly because it was pretty long since I last cosplayed him, aka summer 2013, oops. But then I thought that Kenshin might be a bit too cumbersome to wear because I'm planning to attend panels (if I laugh the scar might start to peel off etc) and well, taking the swords off and putting them back in place several times seemed like a hassle I wasn't too keen on.
So yeah, I wanted something without props.. and preferably something new; something that I was currently into and that would be extra fun to cosplay. I've lately kinda been in a "cosplay rut", as if some of the excitement just wore off and I'm trying to find the fun again, idk? Because of this I wanted something fresh and new to wear – something that I'm currently hyped about and into; maybe it would help with getting the cosplay mood back on track...?

And what could that new and exciting series be?
TOUKEN RANBU, of course. ♡

Character: Yamato no Kami Yasusada (uchiban version)
Series: Touken Ranbu
Yep, so this will be my debut into Touken Ranbu cosplay land!
I've been so into this shit ever since I first heard about it! I just love so many of the character designs to no end – perfect cosplay fodder for me lol; it's never gonna end. x) Yamato no Kami Yasusada is one of the favorites and was so from the very first time I saw him; he's just too cute haha. What makes him even more awesome to me is the fact that he is one of Souji Okita's swords – one of my favorite historical persons, yes please!

Nothing more to add.
A summary about Kummacon will follow after the con is over! Stay tuned!

Hellou ~

Now I've finally gotten around to writing this short summary about my Kummacon experience!
I pardon for the lateness (the con was on 14th June so yeah, more than one week ago) but I must admit that the culprit this time wasn't laziness or busy-ness or any of the other commonly used excuses – it was honestly just me playing way too much Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate with friends. xD I'm seriously addicted to this game to the point that checking internet doesn't even feel tempting and well, that's saying a lot because hey, that's normally one of my top daily priorities! When opening the computer doesn't interest me then there's something horribly wrong lol. I just sit and slay wyverns and pink farting monkeys all day instead, huehuehue. I'm past 110 hours of gameplay and I've had the game for like, less than 2 weeks...? Oops.

Okey so, ehrrm, yeah, Kummacon. Let's get back to that!
So yeah, in case someone reading this doesn't know then I'll just fill you in and say that Kummacon was a small first-time convention held at Oulu in northern Finland; it had free entrance. It's a mixed fandom event (anime & manga, Western movies and comics, cosplay, literature, airsoft, zombie walk etc) that was held on the 14th June which, when you look at the calendar, you will notice is actually a Sunday. Yep, now that's unusual!
Oh, and before someone –who doesn't understand Finnish– wonders what the other half of this post's title means it translates to something like "a small con and half a water melon". You'll understand why soon enough... and yes, I do like goofy titles.

This time only me and Hasakitsuki attended the event; Jäätynyt Enkeli would have come too had he not had a trip to Germany a few days after. I did know though that Sairu-chan was attending, so I didn't leave for the con with the "I'll see no familiar faces" mindset.
As per usual my awesome aunt provided us two a free sleeping place because she lives in Oulu, duh. We arrived at le aunt's place on Saturday evening and yep, everything went smoothly. There's not really anything to say about my pre-con experience, expect that I played on my new New Nintendo 3DS XL, which I had put to use mere days before the event. It was a good choice to actually start playing on it now; I finally feel a bit updated in the gaming scene, hahaha. (but srsly, who came up with that name? New Nintendo 3DS. ._. It's so clumsy in everyday speech to specify that it's the "New" all the time, hurpdurp – "yeah I want to buy the new New Nintendo 3DS. :-DDD The new new....... pew pew. chew chew)

Sunday morning came. I don't know why but I had regained consciousness several times during the night, as if my sleep kept being really hacky or something. There was not anything to disturb me that morning and I never actually got up from bed or opened my eyes nor anything, it's just that I recall being aware that "hey, I'm not dreaming right now and it's the middle of the night" kind of thing. Con hype or nervousness, perhaps?
Whatever kept me from having a normal sleep wasn't only after my sleep – it wanted to screw up other things too! Yeah, you can guess. -.- Directly after breakfast my stomach started making silly roaring sounds and it felt weird and, err, by the time I got to the point I had started putting on my costume and doing the make-up then, well, I spent way longer in the bathroom than I should have. No one wants the details so I'll just leave it at that lol. Worst part is that shitty issues (quite literally, at times) seem a recurring annoyance to me whenever I'm either preparing for an event or something else that's important and, especially, when I have a time limit to keep tabs on. I dunno if it's some kind of "stress stomach" case or what but boy is it annoying when it happens.

Oh well, I got my costume on and we were ready to head out!
Much to our luck the weather was actually appropriate for the month this time – it was fairly warm but not too much. I swear we've had shitty April/autumn weather all the time and the actually sunny and nice days have been so few that I could count them on the fingers of one hand...

Yamato no Kami Yasusada is ready to go!
(note: mirror photo, hence why my kimono is reversed)
When we got to the now familiar Valve building I first headed straight for the bathroom – I reaaaally needed to fix my wig because it was living its own life! Even though the clip-on ponytail is short it's still surprisingly heavy (much fibers, I assume) and during the whole walk through the city it kept pulling my wig backwards; I should sew on some clips to the wig the next time I wear it...
At the bathroom I took the wig off and what do I see? My wig cap isn't even on my head anymore lol. No wonder why my real hair was peeking out like parasites all over the place and didn't stay under the wig when I poked them back in. Oh well, it was an easy fix – I just put the wig hooks on and prepared for the obligatory wig headache that usually follows shortly. You see, normally I almost never use the wig hooks because I seemingly have a rather big head to begin with and, well, most wigs are small-ish on me anyway so there is rarely a need to use them.

Valve building entrance.
Valve as a con hosting place is pretty okay... but it's still rather small and it feels crammed and narrow – wherever you look there is a mass of people constantly on the move; there is not much in the name of a breathing hole, unless you go outside of course. But Valve has its charm and I've started taking a liking to the darn place, hahah. I guess the crappy "let's have a con at the library!" experience adds to that feeling somehow... :'D

This is the sight you were met by as soon as you entered the front doors.
In front of Valvesali. If you turned left after passing this first "door" you
got to the merchandise area.
The one and only merchandise seller.
There was also a "visitor's selling table", aka where con visitors could
leave stuff they didn't want/need anymore for sale, during con time.
Of course there was the Artist's Alley as well.
Notice the seller closest to the camera – she's selling self-made colorful kanzashi
hair decorations! Now that's something out of the ordinary!
Kummacon in itself I didn't have much expectations for in terms of entertainment value – small cons in the north rarely provide anything spectacular. When you've been 20 minutes in the con you had seen it all.
Most of the time I spent hanging around with both old and new friends, going on a stroll in the city (scout for a lunch place!) as well as playing on my Nintendo 3DS. omg the Mii army I got on the StreetPass games, it was awesome!

Time to sit down and play! :D
Of course that there were a fair amount of more-or-less-interesting panels of many different subjects but, err, I'm not the kind to attend several panels in a row because it just tires me out and then I lose concentration/interest (been there, done that) and yes, that's totally why I ended up only attending one panel, even though there would have been at least one more that was interesting; there was the armor-making panel by Sheriff's Anvil (which I definitely wanted to attend) and then there was a cosplay photography panel. The problem was that both of these were placed in the same room and right after one another.
I ended up choosing to go only to the armor panel because that one I thought that I'd be more likely to learn something new from – after all, I did attend a photography panel at Kemi's manga day last year.

The entrance seen from above.
The Artist's Alley area (and the cafeteria to the far left) seen from above.
There was also a gallery for comics in the same building. This is
the Kiroileva Siili comic (lit. swearing hedgehog) which is well-known
in Finland.
About the armor-making panel itself I can say that it was a good one. It seemed to be targeted towards people who are new to armored cosplays (I still don't know if I count myself in that group or in the not-quite-so-newbie one, haha) and while it mostly had a "how I made this specific cosplay of mine" focus the panelist took up the step-by-step process of making the costume come true, which, in turn, can be applied for many different types of armored characters; he gave good starting pointers and all of that.
I personally found that dragging my hakama-clothed ass to the panel was a good investment and yes, it kept me interested through the whole run! The guy holding it was also funny and spoke in this kind of way that was entertaining, at least in my opinion. I do think that panelist holders who are expressive, pull jokes and use a lot of different voices are much more fun to listen to, haha. Also, this guy was clearly passionate about his work and about inspiring others and that was a pleasure to see.

Panel photos!
If you want to read the text I recommend that you open the image in a new tab to get the full-size version, in case your computer shows a resized image when you click on them through the blog.

The panel was held in Valvesali. Before the panel started there was
the Kummacon logo on the big screen.
He took off his cosplay and put the pieces on the scene, so that everyone who
wanted could go and take a look at how they were made. Really nice!

Sairu-chan and Karri showed up a bit later and I spent most of the con being around their company. I did a quick photoshoot for Sairu-chan outside and... eheheh... it ended up being a rather glorious passing of time because of all the photobomb tries that were provided by Karri and another guy. Karri just kept running into and crashing half the photos, it was golden. x) He also imitated Donald Duck's voice and said different things in said voice, including "feels good man" as well as some other lines from that really silly "Akun kakkaongelma" (lit. Donald's shit problem) video on Youtube that has gotten well-known in Finland by now. xD

Photobomb success! (provided by Emil, if I remember his name correctly)
Karri ninja photobomb!
(and he kinda got photobombed by the leaves, which means
photobomb in a photobomb. yo dawg)
This was actually just Karri being funny and picking up Sairu-chan but
it ended up looking like a scene from a cheesy romance movie. xD
Oh, and let's not forget Karri's awesome super crouch walk up the steps!
LIKE A BOSS. (yes, he walked up all the steps like that)
At some point after the photoshoot derping we passed by a nearby area of Valve and there we saw something bizarre and totally out of place – half a water melon left at the whatever park-like thingy!
It was so unexpected that we all went completely "WATER MELOOOOOOOOOONNNNNN" over it and did hilarious fake gasps and surprised faces at each other.. and then we started half-running in another direction. xD Too bad that I don't have picture proof of the melon but it definitely got the gold medal in the "surprise motherfucker!" category.

Towards the end of the con our group of four headed towards a pub that Karri knew – one of his friends worked there. At the pub I felt quite uncomfortable (I'm not a drinker and the atmosphere is not really to my liking) and I considered leaving when Sairu-chan left, but Karri cheered me up and made me stay. He and Hasakitsuki played chess and I just watched and was more or less bored... until a mention of Skecon was uttered and Karri took great interest in wanting to attend the con with us! Yep yep, we might very likely have a new face attending Skecon this year – OMGYES!!
By the time we left the pub the con was close to over so we just took a quick look inside and then headed back to aunt's place. Karri followed with us back for a visit and we ended up playing Super Mario 3D World all three of us and, duuude, was it fun!

But yeah, Kummacon was an overall nice experience in my book – I would likely attend it again if a second edition comes. Even though for most part it felt the same as Animeseminaari because it was in the same building, except that Kummacon was a bit more varied, haha. I didn't notice any clumsy or lacking arranging of the event (seeing how it was a first-time con) but I heard that the cosplay competition had issues and some weird solutions going on. By "weird solutions" I mean that I've heard from others that because the competition had some time issues it was decided that the audience shouldn't clap their hands at all for the contestants when they were on stage.
Why, I wonder?
To save time, I heard.
That's just so weird and not okay that I can't but raise the nope flag. Just... why? ._. Surely there must have been better solutions out there than to cut out something that barely takes time and is a rather important way of encouraging and showing appreciation to whoever is on stage... boo.

Oh well, I don't have much more to add. I am always happy to see that new geeky events are sprouting, especially in the north. I hope that Kummacon won't be one of those "one time only" cases and that it will grow and be held in the future too.
Psst! I didn't get a wig headache! :-DD

See ya!

Lens review: EOS Pop C Dark Blue

Hello everyone out there!

I have a new lens review up to share with you all and this time it's the Pop C Dark Blue lenses by EOS! o/ Mine are labeled under TheDollyEye though, although –from what I've gathered– EOS is the actual manufacturer.
Le-le-le-let's gooooo ~

Lenses in their vials, held up against the window.
Held up but with a flashlight (white/blue light) right under the vials.
Lens on my finger, "wrong" side up.
Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 15.0 mm
Water content: 55%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)

Please do note that these lens details I took from what it says on the TheDollyEye vials that I have. I've noticed that on Pinky Paradise these lenses have a different base curve, diameter and even water content! (note: mine are not bought from Pinky)
That said I don't know which one is the real one or if there is different versions/batches/whatnot of the same lens.

One lens in.
My very first reaction when I put the first lens into my eye and looked in the mirror was "man, these are much more black-toned than I was expecting", along with "these are rather small". They don't seem like 15.0 mm lenses to me, pfft.
I think that they might be fairly similar in size to the Neo Celeb Violet lenses; actually, when I think about it, these are rather similar to the Neo Celeb series in many ways both have a similar lens design, look similar when worn (except that the Pop C appears darker and shows less of the color, in this case blue) and the enlargement is on the smaller side of average but still noticeable.

The first time I wore these they went into my eyes no problem. My left eye started, after one minute or so, to feel like there was something annoying it slightly; I moved the lens in my eye and then my eye was suddenly crying and the feeling of irritation got stronger. I took the lens out, cleaned it and put it back in and this time it was fine.

All photos are taken during a cloudy afternoon, around 15:30-ish. Photos are all taken by me, as is to be expected. ;) I'm sorry about the quality though, my camera didn't want to be my friend this day...

Facing the window in the apartment.
(our window always has the sun facing it on morning/mid-day)
Flash photo indoors.
Bathroom light, part one.
Bathroom light, part two.
Facing a yellow corridor light.
Next to a crappy weak yellow light in the staircase.
Actually, for some reason these lenses look more blue on photos than in real life, at least according to me. xD But yeah, I do like the color of these although I would have hoped for a bit more blue color and maybe a bit less black; now it kinda looks like the black is a tad overwhelming. It's not a bad thing though, it does give a rather rad effect and on some days I really like the dark look it gives.

Outdoors with my back against the light.
Outdoors facing the sun.
In terms of comfort I think these are on the better end of average; I've worn them for around 4 hours no problem a couple of times. I do sometimes have this very slight feeling in my eye that I'm wearing contacts but it's not bothersome at all, really minor.
Overall I do like these lenses, although I'm not sure if I would repurchase them – maybe if I needed them for a character with black-blue eyes because, funnily enough, these look lighter and more blue on photos than what they do in real life, as I already mentioned before. I'm actually surprised how much nicer they look on photos... it's a bit of a bummer, haha. xD

Lastly I have the usual from-a-distance photo!

Facing window during a rather sunny day.
(note: this photo was taken on a different day than the rest)
Short summary:

Color: 6/10
It shows as dark blue, yeah, but I was kinda hoping for a bit more blue and a bit less... black.
Design: 7/10
These give me the whole "hey I've seen similar lenses out there!" reaction but they do look good nonetheless.
Opacity: 7/10
It does its job, but somehow it seems like my own eye color shows through in certain lights when viewed from a distance.
Enlargement: 4/10
Enlargement is okay.
Comfort: 7/10
Comfort is on the better end of average I'd say.
Naturalness: 5/10
They aren't really that natural because of the thick black outer ring, but it's still not bad either.

That's all for this round! Bub-bai ~

Skecon 2015 – cosplay plans revealed!

Hello everyone, how's it rollin'? ;)

As some of you might know, Skecon is soon around the corner and I am heading there as per usual! I'm a Skecon-lover since 2012, aka when the very first one was held. ♡
In case someone here is now like "Skecon?" then yeah, it's a small but constantly growing little anime convention held this year during 3-5 July in Skellefteå, Sweden. What puts Skecon apart from other similar events in the north is that the people behind it are ambitious like no one's business and they also have the passion to get unique/refreshing entertainment to the con itself – basically saying that Skecon does things other cons don't, and by that I mean good things. For example, last year they were the first con to hold a Vocaloid concert in all of Sweden and veeery likely the rest of northern Europe as well! The Vocaloid concert will be held this year too, by the way. *hint hint*
Yep yep, Skecon isn't one of my favorite conventions for no reason. ;) It's just such a comfy con with a wonderful location, a lot to do (gaming room etc) and it's just awesome overall – certainly one of the cons that I'd hate to miss out on, period.

But hey, I think that's enough pre-hyping so let's get to the cosplay plans now!
At first I had a different line-up in mind but then I thought that I felt more like cosplaying these characters instead; I just hope that the weather won't be horrible because I wouldn't be smiling about either rain or a case of oh-holy-shit-I'm-being-grilled-alive. -.-

But now, cosplays!

Friday

Series: Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan
Character: Hajime Saitou

It's time to step back into the Hakuouki wagon again!
You thought my interest had maybe calmed down a bit by now? Lolnope! :'DD neverrr
Saitou is nice to cosplay and I really want to have a new photoshoot too; Skecon has wonderful photo-friendly areas outside so I'm thinking that this should be the perfect opportunity to get some good updated shots of this costume!

Saturday

Series: Iza, Shutsujin! Koi Ikusa
Character: Kojirou Sasaki

Another cosplay debut!
I've actually wanted to cosplay this guy for a few years now and finally I'm getting around to it! I just hope that the wig won't betray me because I have yet to style it... x)
Otherwise I'm really not expecting anyone to recognize who I'm cosplaying lol. If someone does I'm gonna be so surprised that I'll eat pickles for the rest of the month...

Sunday

Series: Rentarou Satomi
Character: Black Bullet (anime version)

New cosplay!
I've already mentioned at the beginning of the year that I was planning on cosplaying this fellow and now it's happening! I likely won't have the gun this time around though because well, money issues. :< I'll add it later. I really don't have 1000+ SEK to spend on a prop right now. *coughairsoftreplicacough*
The reason I'm doing the anime version is because in the anime he has brown eyes (manga has blue) and so far I've only watched the anime, so it feels more "right" to do the anime version for now, heheh.

~~~~~~~~~~
And that's my plans for Skecon 2015! I want to mention though that I might change on which day I wear what cosplay if the weather is really hot, rainy or such.
I hope to meet many familiar faces at the con and I'm sure that it will be a blast! I'm also hoping that the bouncy castle will return because seriously, dangnabbit!
I'm just really excited because Skecon is something so wonderful – I get hyped just thinking about it!
That's all!
Stay alert though, I might do some kind of cosplay test-run post just before the con!
Skecon 2015 – Not quite as good as last year
Hello peeps!
It is finally time for the Skecon 2015 summary! ^o^
As you probably know I once again attended Skecon in Skellefteå, Sweden. It was held during the first weekend of July (3rd to 5th) in a building called Folkparken.
This time our traveling setup was a bit different, mainly because a guy known as Jäätynyt Enkeli was not with us this time. :( Our Skecon invaders consisted this year of me, Hasakitsuki, Sairu-chan and her little brother! Yep, this means that Karri couldn't make it after all...
Skecon advertisement in the Skellefteå bus stop! :'D
Our journey to Skellefteå began on Friday morning. Seeing how the convention opened its doors at 13:35 we could take a very early bus and arrive at Skellefteå just in time! (the bus ride takes around 4 hours)
We had decided on taking one of the earlier buses so that we would have a bit more than one hour of time before the con opened. But because of Jäätynyt Enkeli being abroad Sairu-chan and her bro couldn't sleep over at his place (they live in a different town and our apartment is way too small) the night before and so there ended up being some complications with the buses. Me and Hasakitsuki got onto the planned bus but when I didn't see the second half of our company in there anywhere I started worrying. I tried to call and text Sairu-chan multiple times during the trip, but to no avail. I started getting really worried.
What if she had forgotten or overslept?
What if she had taken the wrong bus?
What if something else had happened on the way?
It was really distressing to not being able to reach her at all! I spent most of the bus trip worrying about her and her brother and hoping that I'd see them safely at Skellefteå when we arrived there...
One thing though! I want to mention that a few days before the con I decided to repaint my wooden swords that had arrived for a while ago – yep, I needed them for my Skecon cosplays.
These I ordered online so that I have a wooden generic katana set for all those cosplays that don't really need specific swords; I'm too lazy to make new swords for all my samurai cosplays, haha. XD My old ones broke because of an accident after Tracon 2013, so I got replacement ones...
But when I got the swords I noticed that the blades had this silver paint that was motherflippin' BLING BLING SPARKLING GLITTER MONSTERS!
I was just like... WHY?? ლ(ಠ益ಠ)ლ
I totally took my silver spray paint and went outside to repaint the blades before assembling them– so much better! Bling katanas are just not realistic lol. ._. I swear these were so sparkly that they could have repelled even Satan himself!
Funny thing is that I bought the swords from the exact same seller on eBay and my previous ones definitely weren't glitter-treated...
Before photo on top and after on bottom.
So yeah, back to the Skecon journey!
Me and Hasakitsuki jumped off at a bus stop close to Folkparken and –holy bugamajoola– was it steaming hot!! The air was so warm it was stifling and humid like hell! Keeping my black hoodie on was like being boiled alive – since when does it get this friggin' hot in northern Sweden?!?
Oh well, we dragged our mountain of luggage to Folkparken and there we just sat down on the floor and watched people appearing from all directions. It was horrible to wait outside because of the heat, especially because I'm kinda heat sensitive and start to feel sick if it's really warm. I also burn really easily so I'm kinda forced to overdress and wear long-sleeves when it's boiling hot... :<
Skecon entrance around one hour before doors opened.
While sitting there and waiting I was really trying to scout for Sairu-chan and her bro, but I didn't see them anywhere! I tried to call her a few times again but no answer either. :( I was just crossing my fingers that she would show up any minute while I was looking at the ends of the different paths one could take to reach Folkparken...
The clock struck the time for the doors to open and this one Skecon worker came out and trolled everyone; he just went like "ARE YOU READY FOR SKECON GUYS?! :DD" and when everyone shouted "YESSSSSS" he just turned around and went all "one minute more" and abruptly closed the door and went back inside. xD It was both hilarious and frustrating at the same time lol.
It did take more than one minute after that before the doors opened but hey, they did!
I got my con ticket without any issues and went straight upstairs to go take a shower because, oh god, the toast! Showering seriously felt so good after standing outside in that humid heat...
After showering I started putting on my cosplay – Hajime Saitou from Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan. It didn't feel like the best idea ever to put on a semi-heavy cosplay when the weather was so devilishly warm but oh well, cosplay plans are cosplay plans and it would have been a waste to have the costume taking place in the suitcase and then not using it; especially when it's a cosplay that takes much space, like most of my kimono cosplays do. *shrugs*
I struggled with my make-up for a while but after some hours I was finally done, costume on and all. But guess what guys? :D Yeah, of course as soon as I had my costume on and was ready to go photoshoot (which was one of the main reasons I brought Saitou to Skecon) then it had to start raining cats and dogs for the rest of the day! Murphy's law strikes again. ._.
This totally means that I got no photoshoot, which was quite the bummer. Why did I bother?
But to compensate I at least took a few selfies, while hanging around, just to prove that "yes, I was in cosplay" on Friday.
Luckily I did find Sairu-chan and her bro soon after I had changed into cosplay; it was so nice to see that they had made it here safely!
She explained to me that she had missed the first bus (aka the one we had planned to take together) and they had then proceeded to take the second bus that left a bit later. They basically got to Skellefteå around one hour after me and Hasakitsuki, no biggie.
Because it started raining so damn much I spent the whole Friday indoors just checking stuff out. There were some scene games being done and I ended up watching the "mummy" game, which consisted of two teams and one person per team being the mummy. The mummy was to stand still while the other team mates wrapped them up as fast and neat as possible into a... well, mummy. Then the audience got to choose which mummy was the "more mummy" one and that one was declared the winner. xD Part two consisted of the two mummies breaking out of their bandages as fast as they could, without any outside help. The one who got out first won.
It was funny because the teams were called "Team Awesome" and "Team Pretty Okay" and, funnily enough, team Pretty Okay was the one to win lol.
Mummy game going on.
Later on Friday there was a lone guy doing an iaido display.
Of course I went to watch! I'm a big budo fan and I love Japanese swords and samurai and all of that kind of stuff! :') It was cool to see him doing all these moves and, after it was over, I went up to talk with him. We ended up hanging together for the whole con! Woop woop, new friends! :D
Iaido display.
I checked out the video game room several times and there were plenty of different game consoles you could pick from! Everything from good ol' Super Nintendo and Nintendo 64 to the new generation consoles!
Gaming room!
Video game tournament lists!
As you can see above there was a Mario Kart: Double Dash!! 2 versus 2 tournament being held this year too. Last year me and my bro Jäätynyt Enkeli signed up for this tournament and we ended up combing home grand victory and crushing everyone! x) You can read about it over at my last year's Skecon summary, if interested. ;)
But yeah, seeing how my dear brother wasn't here this time I didn't participate. Also I kinda didn't want to have people recognize me and go all "OH SHIT, IT'S THAT GUY AGAIN WHO PWNED EVERYONE LAST YEAR" at me, oops. xD I did consider going to watch the tournament though, although my presence might have been... interesting...
Someone had started making Vegeta but quit...?
When it got late I changed out of cosplay and our full company headed to the sleeping accommodation place, which was a school. At first we ended up going the wrong way because we thought it would be in the same place as last year, which it was but still wasn't. We did find our way and I need to mention that yeah, it was very close to the previous sleeping accommodation and we could have walked the "wrong way" and still got there. OTL Different building though.
We fell asleep without any problems, even though for some reason we were the first ones to go sleep and I saw no one else in the same classroom (even though matresses and sleeping bags were put down) even past midnight – were everyone party harding?
The derp discussions before we fell asleep were glorious though. XD I'll just say that it ended up with Metaporn Metapod fanfic ideas and some really disturbing things lol.
Saturday morning came and we lagged around after our alarms had rung. We ended up going to the con during a time that we thought was late... just to realize that when we got to the con the cafeteria wasn't even open so we couldn't get instant breakfast! What you mean it opens at 10? :c
Oh well, it was no big deal so we just sat on one of the tables next to the cafeteria and waited for our brains to start running. Eventually the cafeteria opened and we bought some frozen pies to eat that we threw into the micro. Too bad my pie was cold so it wasn't pleasant to eat, but I managed.
After getting some food I just checked the merchandise hall and went to double-check if the kyudo display really was cancelled and yes, it was. :'( It was supposed to be during Saturday afternoon but it was cancelled because someone got sick. It was a big bummer for me because getting to do kyudo is one of the things I enjoy the most at Skecon. Also the bouncy castle was nowhere to be seen, which was bummer number two...
Oh well, I went to check the merchandise hall and stuff until I felt like changing into cosplay. Luckily on Saturday it wasn't as deadly hot as the day before, so putting on cosplay didn't feel as blergh. What felt blergh though was putting on my colored contact lenses!
I swear that during the whole Friday my eyes had alternated between feeling dry and irritated to being watery. It was horrible and I had hoped that it would go away by Saturday but guess what? LOLFUCKINGNOPE. :'DD
I wasn't keen on wearing my lenses but I did so anyway, just for the sake of the photoshoot. I was hoping that my eyes wouldn't start crying and because of some miracle they didn't – I could even stand the lenses for longer than I thought!
My cosplay of the day was Kojirou Sasaki from Iza, Shutsujin! Koi Ikusa.
(yes, this is the obligatory cosplay selfie)
I had to style my wig when I put it on but it went nicely. I just put some pins here and some pins there and put styling products into the bangs.
When I was done I asked Hasakitsuki for a photoshoot, but poop happened I AM THE GREAT MIGHTY POO and I got Sairu-chan to photoshoot me instead. Much to our disappointment it of course started raining half-way through our shoot and we had to cut it short and return back inside. Aargh weather,  y u do dis? >:C It was all nice just before...
At least we got a few good shots although most of the time the camera wasn't cooperating and, when it was, then of course my face wasn't cooperating. :-DD
Cosplayer:Shiro Samurai (Kojirou Sasaki)
We returned back inside and after a while everyone –including the iaido guy named Nils who had become part of our group– had gotten fairly hungry so we headed out to town to find food. A bit past half-way it started raining and I was cursing myself for not having changed into my everyday shoes instead of keeping on wearing my brand new geta, which took a lot of damage from all the fucking stones on the way...
I kept being behind everyone else because I had to constantly stop to poke away stones that had got stuck under my geta. At this point I was feeling kinda bad so being constantly behind everyone made me feel a bit left out.
When we finally reached Subway I was feeling anxious and, when it was my turn to order, I just felt all kinds of stress so I didn't manage to order anything and just went to sit on one of the tables instead. I hate getting these kind of anxiety attacks in public places...
Everyone sat and ate their sandwiches while I was hating myself for making a fool out of me; I didn't even manage to answer the person at the counter because I stumbled on my words. I must have looked like an idiot. ._. I just felt like a mess and then I started feeling sick which led me to lose my apetite anyway...
We walked back to Skecon just in time for the Vocaloid concert, the main selling point of the whole con. I honestly wasn't really in the mood because I was still feeling anxious, but I took a chair and went to sit and watch it anyway.
The Vocaloid concert started off with Miku (of course) singing Senbonzakura.
Watching the concert made me cheer up, even though it was a  big disappointment that there were no Gakupo nor Kaito songs, even though that's what everyone had said that they wanted to see when Skecon had asked over at Facebook for song suggestions. :( I recognized some of the songs were the same ones from last year too. I guess I was less fascinated by it this time around because I had already seen it once before and the novelty had worn off a bit; it was still a cool concert of course but for someone who pretty much only listens to Gakupo it was quite the letdown that there were no Gakupo songs even though that's what people had commented that they wanted the most.
Notice the two kendo peeps in the audience on the photo above; their shinai swords had glowsticks on them and during the concert they did multiple kendo swings with the swords (haya suburi) so it gave a sort of light saber effect. xD It was hella genius and actually entertained me more than the concert itself. LOL What you mean I used to do kendo and love it?
The audience was in the mood!
Luka Megurine sang a couple songs, one of them was Just Be Friends.
Rin and Len Kagamine duet song.
People in the audience going wild!
The audience did this thing that you hold the person in front of you on the shoulders until you make a human train and then you just walk around being all noisy and hyped and try to get as many to join in
as possible. :'D
I've seen people do this many times but most times I'm just too lazy to tag along... hahaah.
Skecon's own maskot Rosu finishing the concert with the
*surprise surprise* super popular Karamelldansen song.
I honestly don't remember what we did directly after the Vocaloid concert but I think we just hung around with Nils in the cafeteria and chatted for a while. At some point a guy cosplaying Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars showed up and Sairu-chan's bro went to ask him for a photo. I took this opportunity in use and took some photos of him too – he was hella cool!
He ended up sitting with us and then we started talking and he talked about his costume and how expensive it and the light saber was. He also had a Hakuouki drinking bottle and he had no idea it was Hakuouki. xD I ended up suggesting a photoshoot for Obi-Wan and we went outside to take some pics – it was super fun and it got me fully back into the con mood!
One of the Obi-Wan Kenobi photoshoot pics!
Photography by me, Shiro Samurai.
Both Nils, Obi-Wan Kenobi (alias Mattias) and another guy ended up in our company and we talked until it was around midnight and that's when I finally went to take off my costume. It was a lot of fun to hang around these guys!
Random con photo of the main scene area.
After I had taken off my cosplay everyone had kinda just gone somewhere and we decided to go sleep. It was funny to see Nils sleeping on the couch at the sleeping accommodation's hall (aka not in the classrooms) on the following morning; we had earlier seen that another random guy did it and everyone had thought "man, wish I had been clever enough to do that!". xD
Sunday morning came and I felt like a goblin. Holy shit did my eyes feel bad!
I felt so slow and blöärägshjshj that I seriously couldn't be bothered to put on my Sunday cosplay; very few were in cosplay anyway and there was a random Sunday market outside, which made the outside area filled to the brim with non-congoers and thus not very good for photoshoots – who wants a lot of people and market stands photocrashing in the background? Not me!
So yeah, I was in my casual gear on Sunday and it felt relieving. I was just way too tired to cosplay on the last day.
Most of the day I just spent hanging around and then the very last hours I spent playing Super Mario World (OMG my childhood! ♡) in the gaming room together with Sairu-chan's brother. That was one of the highlights of the con – we had shitloads of fun!
Random con photo showing the "garderob" area, aka where you dumped all
your stuff that you didn't want to carry around the whole weekend.
Merchandise hall feat. glorious photobomb!
I am probably forgetting to mention so many things but oh well, shit happens. :'D I need to mention though that at some point I was sitting in the cafeteria area and then I heard that a certain song was playing.. "I AAAAAM THE GREAT MIGHTY POO, AND I'M GOING TO THROW MY SHIT AT YOOOOU ~". At this point I cracked up so badly because seriously, just a few days prior my awesome friend Marcus had started singing this song, during a gaming night, and now it was playing at Skecon and I actually got to hear the whole song for the first time! Coincidence or not??
Okay so.. Skecon is always great but this year it wasn't quite as good as last year, in my opinion. This is mainly because the things I was looking forward to the most didn't happen. :( And because the weather screwed up my photoshoot plans.
What made Skecon a nice experience was all the people I met there, both new and old faces! There's always so many awesome people attending that it's hard to not find someone who's a blast to be around. I want to thank everyone who talked to me and who made this Skecon a great experience!
Thanks for reading and bye bye! ~
Photoshoot: Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars!
Hello geeks!
At Skecon this year I met this awesome guy who cosplayed Obi-Wan Kenobi from the super popular Star Wars series! I offered to photoshoot him after the sun had set and we went to take some photos around the Folkparken area in Skellefteå, Sweden.
I thought that it wouldn't be a bad idea to start occasionally posting photoshoots that I've held to other people on my blog as well, now would it? ;) It would feel a bit like a waste to have these cool photos lying around on my laptop and not being shown to anyone, except the model himself of course.
Also, as I've mentioned before, I am a hobby photographer (as well as a cosplayer) so I do want to show off what is the outcome when I'm the man behind the camera at times – not the one being in costume! ^o^
I would be really glad to hear if you folks out there would like to see more of my photoshooting adventures posted in the future? :D Thanks for viewing!
[Sponsored] Lens review: Neo Ruby Queen Gray
Hello guys!
This time I will be reviewing the Neo Ruby Queen Gray circle lenses!
These lenses were kindly sponsored by Klenspop! They sell mostly circle lenses and make-up for affordable prices so yeah, go take a look at their store if that sounds interesting to you! ;) If you want to read more about my experiences with Klenspop then do check out my earlier review here!
Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 14.0 mm
Water content: 38%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)
As recommended I put the lenses to soak overnight before wearing them for the first time. I had no problems with these lenses while inserting them, everything went as it should. Sometimes when I put them in they can sting a little, but in those cases I just take 'em out, clean them and put them back in and then the problem is gone. :)
I think that comfort of these lenses is pretty okay; I've had some days when they felt rather bad and dried out around the 4-hour mark and then on other times I've worn them for around 6 hours during a convention with little to no issues. They seem a bit random but most of the time I'd say that comfort is on the better end of average.
One lens in. Pay attention to the enlargement!
These lenses definitely appear gray on my light blue-gray-green eyes. They also blend nicely and enhance my real eyes in a way that doesn't look unnatural. The diamond pattern is pretty, it doesn't jump at you but it's still there and it definitely adds something extra to your gaze!
The limbal ring is thin and the lens design fades towards the pupil hole. The Ruby Queen Grays don't really provide much in terms of enlargement so I wouldn't call these for the dolly type of lenses; enlargement is in the nice subtle range.
All of these photos are taken during a cloudy summer afternoon. There's no color filters added so that you'd see how the lenses really look. ;)
Inside my apartment, facing the window.
Inside my apartment, turned away from the window. Only natural light.
Flash photo indoors.
Bathroom light.
White-ish corridor light.
White-ish corridor light, part 2.
Weak yellow light next to the staircase.
Indoors looking/facing through the outer door's window, which is leading
to the backyard.
As you can see they do appear gray on my eyes in all light variations (even the crappy lights, woop! :'D) that I've tried so far. I'm fairly sure that these would appear gray even on other eye colors!
They might not be the most opaque ever but the color change is there and yes, it's nice enough to not completely block out your real eye color, if that's a look that you prefer.
And next for the outdoor batch of photos! Still of course taken during the same time as the indoor photos!
Outdoors under the building's roof, facing the light indirectly.
Outdoors facing the sun indirectly.
Outdoors, back against the sun.
Outdoors, back against the sun. Part 2.
Facing the sun directly.
Sorry about my pained expression on the photo above; my eyes were overly sensitive this day and even when I looked at the cloudy sky (aka not directly into the sun) my eyes started watering like hell and it was absolutely horrible to keep them open.
Super close-up photo! (facing sun)
I would say that I like these lenses! The diamond pattern is gorgeous without being too overwhelming, creating a semi-natural look while still providing your eyes that extra 'pop' they need to stand out in the crowd!
I'd recommend these for cosplayers who like to do more natural-ish approaches to their character portrayals, as well as to fashion people who love using circle lenses to complete their looks. ^^
And lastly I of course have the distance photo!
Short summary:
Color: 7/10
These are a nice medium light gray shade that shows up well!
Design: 7/10
The design has this kind of diamond shape but it's a tad more subtle than other lenses with similar diamond patterns, aka it mixes with your real eyes and doesn't look too fake.
Opacity: 7/10
Fairly opaque on the outer corners but towards the pupil hole the color fades and blends into your real eyes.
Enlargement: 3/10
Enlargement is small but it's there!
Comfort: 7/10
Comfort is okay. I could wear them for several hours without getting any notable discomfort.
Naturalness: 7/10
Even though these have a diamond pattern they still don't look as unnatural as one would expect, thanks to the smaller enlargement effect and the nice blending with my eyes!
And that's all for this review, thanks for reading folks!
Also, thank you Klenspop! ♡
Närcon 2015 cosplay plans – Bird trainer & tragic swordsman!
Hello everybody!
Yeah, you've seen it – I AM HEADING TO NÄRCON THIS YEAR!! o/
Last year I decided not to go but this year I am once again attending it! Last time I was at Närcon was in 2013, aka before the major expansion happened. I have a feeling that this year I will be very lost and won't find my way anywhere but oh well, gonna be buckets of fun anyway! :'D You are never really lost until... you are lost. Ehrmm. Yeah.
I will be traveling alone this time, which means that no one of my usual con company (Hasakitsuki, Jäätynyt Enkeli) will follow with because of them having other stuff in the way but hey, I'm sure to meet familiar faces at the con because my awesome mate Hitsuwa and some others will be there! I can't wait!
I'm really excited to go to Närcon again and I'm curious to see what it will be like! I've actually heard really mixed opinions about Närcon 2014 (both good and really really bad) so I want to see for myself if this year's edition is anything like the horror stories I've been told. x) I'm hoping that it will be worth the heavy hole it leaves in my anorexic wallet and that Närcon will be as comfy and festival-y as I remember it!
For this Närcon I really need to lighten the cosplay luggage – seeing how I will travel with a group of con people from the north in a minibus I will have luggage restrictions. You see, we will be around 8 or 9 people in the minibus and everyone's stuff will need to fit into the goddamn thing. :'D So yeah, I really can't take a whale-sized suitcase with me and shove it into the vehicle like I owned the thing lol.
For this reason I have decided to only take with me two cosplays for a whoppin' 4-day event! I'm sure I probably couldn't be bothered to cosplay all days anyway, especially if the dreaded heat wave will hit on the Närcon weekend, which it is infamous for doing. ._. I really dislike being all warm and sweaty in cosplay... So yep, only two cosplays for me and then gargwawesome semi-casual geekily spiced gear for the other days!
So, who will I cosplay at Närcon then?
*insert drumroll here*
Series: Rurouni Kenshin (Tsuiokuhen OVA)
Character: Kenshin Himura (Hitokiri Battousai)
Series: Pokémon HeartGold & SoulSilver
Character: Falkner (jap. Hayato)
I have not decided fully yet on what day I will do what cosplay, but I'm thinking of doing Falkner on Friday and Kenshin on Saturday. I reserve the right for any changes lol. It will depend on the weather, mainly.
I decided to go with Falkner and Battousai version Kenshin this time – both being costumes that haven't seen the light of day since 2012 and 2013, respectively! Man, that feels like so long ago...
The main reasons for these choices being that Falkner is a lightweight costume to wear –aka I shouldn't die of heat stroke– and Kenshin is just super fun to cosplay and is on my lighter end of kimono cosplays; he also doesn't require any vintage/authentic kimono pieces (save for the shoes and tabi socks), which would be a problem to take care of during the event. By problem I mean that if I wore a cosplay with a real –most likely silk– kimono it would be a hassle to air it out after wear (hot weather wouldn't be kind to the garment, aka sweating, and it's important to let it air out properly before folding and putting the kimono/hakama/etc back in storage) because I would need to hang it and well, have fucking fun doing that when you're camping in a tent the whole duration of the event. ;) Just.... nope. NOPENOPENOPENOPE.
I'm sorry not sorry! for the cosplay recycling for such a big con but I really don't have the money right now to do new costumes and the new cosplays I could have done I, well, ran into issues with. I originally had other plans, I admit.
I hope that my cosplay plans aren't too much of a bummer deluxe. x) Thanks for checking this out and I hope to see many cool souls at Närcon!
Peaceandrainbowstoeveryone! ~
Närcon 2015 – Nice outside, quite rotten inside
Hello everyone!
I have recovered enough from Närcon to start scribbling together a con report about it.
If you didn't know Närcon is a big 4-day event (from Thursday to Sunday) held in Linköping, southern Sweden, every year during the last full week of July. This year it was on 23-26th July. Närcon is more like a festival than a typical anime convention.
As most of you probably know, there's been a lot of negative talk about this year's Närcon all over the social media sites and a fair share of it is true – many attendants have had really bad experiences and understandably so. If you are interested in the less-than-good experiences of others I'd recommend you to check out this blog post here: https://andrearitsu.wordpress.com/2015/07/27/narcon-2015-how-do-you-even-recover-from-this/
This person takes up a lot of awful things that happened and have valid points for why Närcon internally crashed so badly this year. I also agree with them and I saw a lot of the things they mentioned too, like those poor seizure warning signs etc. There's also links to even more experience posts if you scroll to the end of that linked post!
I have very mixed feelings about Närcon Sommar 2015 (lit. Närcon Summer) myself and I will try to explain why so along the length of this post while I simultaneously talk about my con experience in general, aka what I did there etc.
Note though that all opinions in this post regarding Närcon are my own experiences and/or thoughts of things that I've heard/read elsewhere; I am not saying that everything is 100% true or that Närcon is more evil than Sauron himself. Neither is my word any ultimate truth or anything of the sort, aka your opinions might vary – I'm just one human out of thousands who attended Närcon. Some things I mention will be speculations.
The point is not to bash or give Närcon a bad reputation or image; I just think that as an attendant of their events (and of any events in general, especially ones that I pay for and thus expect a certain quality from) I have the right to tell others about my experiences, no matter if good or bad.
I really wish Närcon well and that they will improve for the better and think twice about what they prioritize but yeah, this year things didn't really go as they should have for many... and I think we all need to voice our opinions to make a change.
Ready to follow with on my Närcon journey? Let's goooooo! ~
(protip: this is a kilometer post so you better prepare your favorite drink!)
This is a map of the whole Campus Valla university area that
Närcon was held in. It's really big.
My journey to Närcon started already on Tuesday morning; this is because I live high up in northern Sweden and the traveling to Linköping takes a full day.
I had earlier on Facebook managed to get in contact with a group of congoers in Umeå, who planned to hire a minibus and drive it all the way down to Närcon. This was a very economic and pleasant ride for me and it also gave me a chance to meet some new faces and make friends!
Yep, in case you didn't know I actually left alone for Närcon – no one of my close-living friends, whom I normally go to cons with, could/wanted to attend Närcon.
So yeah, on Tuesday I jumped into the Umeå bus on the morning and around 7 hours later I had arrived at Umeå's hospital, where Vicktor and I had decided to meet. I had to leave one day earlier than the minibus departure (which was on Wednesday morning) because of sucky bus times; there was no bus that left from my town early enough to arrive in Umeå before 9 in the morning – the earliest bus would arrive around 12:00 and that was a bus that started its journey around 4 or so in the night/morning!! This means that I totally våldgästade Vicktor spent the night at Vicktor's place. He was completely chill with it (even though we were strangers to each other before this) because he was one of the minibus riders as well.
The Tuesday night went by doing some chit-chat with Vicktor and watching him trying to last minute finish his cosplay for the con. The apartment showed obvious signs of the "holy shit the con is next week and my cosplay isn't done!" frenzied sewing rush having occurred – fabric scraps, loose threads and empty lemonade bottles were all over the living room and random cosplay pieces were lying around in the corners. On the living room table was a sewing machine and yes, this costumer mess made me feel perfectly at home lol.
I got to sleep on the couch in the living room, which was a surprisingly comfy couch to sleep in, by the way.
This is where I slept.
(enjoy the cellphone quality)
Wednesday morning was... stressful as fuck. I realized too late that I had woken up way too late. I barely had time to dress and start eating my toast before Vicktor told me "we have to leave like, RIGHT NOW". I took all my OVER NINETHOUSAAAAND bags and we headed out in a rush.
I need to say that I really regret not having taken a normal suitcase, instead I had one of those sport bag type of carrying bags that have a shoulder strap as well as handles. The reason I had not taken my usual blue suitcase was because of luggage restrictions for the minibus – after all we were 9 people in it and everyone's stuff had to fit inside. I had thought that the sport bag, well, bag, would take less space and in case of serious space shortage it would allow for more "squishing" and thus extra space to be made than what a rigid suitcase would.
While we were heading out for the bus stop Vicktor speed-walked in front of me, just to check if the bus was coming. Thank heavens he did because as soon as we got in sight of the bus stop we saw the damn bus stopping at the bus station! I was far away from the bus and had to run like mad, with all my bags and pouches weighing on me way too much for sprints, to get to it in time. It was a horrible stress panic moment and I think I died a bit.
If anyone wonders I had 7 bags on me in total: tent bag, big sport bag with all my cosplay stuff, shoulder bag, sleeping bag, camera bag, a plastic bag with cosplay shoes and my sword carrying pouch. Oh, and my Turtles pillow hanging from my shoulder bag so that's actually 8. Guess if running with all that stuff on me and with shitty stamina (thanks to a lung disease years ago that crippled it and I haven't been able to really get it back to normal standards) was nice... ._.
We made it to the bus and we jumped off at Vasaplan in centrum. From there we walked to Umeå bus station where Evelina would arrive with the minibus at nine in the morning. Because we had some time to pass before our ride would arrive Vicktor went to get a sandwich from Subway (we barely had time for breakfast earlier). I had wanted sushi but yesterday night we had checked online for the Shogun sushi bar's opening times (aka the one just next to the bus station) and it wouldn't open until 10. But when I first had walked past the sushi bar I had noticed that, for some reason, the door was open. I decided to try my luck and went inside; inside it was empty but I could hear that a radio or television was on rather loudly in the back of the kitchen part. I waited a few minutes and this Asian man appeared from where the noise was coming – I instantly recognized him being the owner/chef of the place (I've ordered from this place before)! He told me that I can order if I wanted something; omg that was so kind of him. ;A; So yeah, I totally got my much wanted take-away sushi and I felt so pleased with myself lol.
By the time I got back to the bus station the black minibus was standing there and I shook hands with Evelina, the driver. We then proceeded to put all our stuff in the back of the car (and this is when I regretted my lack of suitcase for realz – we had plenty of space left!!) and go sit inside it, while we waited for the remaining people to show up. Everyone showed up and we started our journey to the south!
During the bus trip I probably slept more than half the time! I remember falling asleep after we had left Umeå (I did see the Höga Kusten bridge though, which I really like!) and the next time I woke up we were in the popular Tönnebro resting place.
We were supposed to eat at Tönnebro but I wasn't hungry since I had eaten my sushi in the minibus. And yes, the minibus totally smelled a mix of Subway and sushi at one point – what you mean congoers were here? xD
Tönnebro resting place was seemingly called Rasta, which means
something like "take a break" in Swedish.
Too bad that I always thought of a different kind of rasta and so it was hard to take it seriously... xD
...
Ehrmmm. Yeah. xDDD
I ended up buying a bottle of chocolate drink (Pucko ffs!) and a big cinnamon bun. While I was sitting and eating my bun I saw from one of the windows that my bus crew had already assembled and were standing next to the bus – fuck me!
I threw the rest of the bun into my mouth and hurried outside, just to realize that I wasn't mister Super Late. Vicktor was later. I had carnivored the bun when I would have had time to enjoy it more, meh.
Rasta Café, hihihi.
The next time I woke up we were in Uppsala. Then in Stockholm. I don't remember sleeping that long but okay...? At Stockholm we picked up our ninth passenger and continued towards Linköping, although we got lost in Stockholm and everyone was annoyed because we kept going around in circles and not finding the right street. Evelina ragequitted so Vicktor got to drive the Stockholm part, but at least we found the guy we had to pick up and we even found our way out of Stockholm, success!
When we finally got to Linköping it was late evening. I directly went to get my con ticket from the information desk outside. While I made my way there (with all my stuff of course) Angie Cross spotted me. We had planned to camp together so she tagged along with me to the info. There I got my con band as well as the camping band which, much to my liking, also was a cool fabric band with the reverse colors of the ordinary Närcon band! Frihgin' schwiit! :'D
There were some derps with the camping tickets though. Unlike on 2013 this year every person who wanted to camp needed to have their own camping ticket, even though they were camping with someone else who provided the tent and had a ticket. On 2013 only one person in a camping company needed a camping ticket because the ticket was for the tent space itself, not related to the amount of people who would be in the same tent. So yeah, because of this change, which we were unaware of, there were some issues because Angie had no camping ticket and the only way to get one was to order and pay for it online. Luckily a guy showed up who had hotspot access on his cellphone and he kindly let her use it. Same guy also said that my Wario cap was awesome (and took a pic of it) and that he also loved Wario's own games – eff yeah more Wario fans! We totally ended up talking about good ol'Wario Land 3 to Game Boy Colour and shit. x)
Oh, and I also want to mention that for some reason only the campers got cool fabric tickets – those who were in the sleeping hall dormitories only got boring single color paper tickets. The camping tickets were paper tickets too, back in 2013.
This was the only direction sign I found and it's super vague.
More arrow signs around the path would have been great too, especially
to the camping.
Angie managed to get herself a camping ticket and we headed for the camping site. There wasn't really any clear indications or signs where the camp was so at first we ended up going in the wrong way. Having a gate leading to a farm doesn't necessarily tell everyone "hey the camp is this way!" so, yeah... Närcon, please put more signs around, especially for the camping site because it's outside the main event area; it's a bother to walk around cluelessly because the con area itself is so huge.
Oh and also, I want to say that on the next morning when I headed out from the camp I actually ended up going in the wrong direction; had I not spotted other congoers –who told me that this was the wrong way– I would have kept on walking until I arrived in Linköping centrum!! I ended up having to take a detour and ask people for the way back into the con area; it was not convenient nor fun at all.
It's not so hard to put some paper signs with arrows along the way so that nobody gets lost; even Skecon does it and it's a godsend if you're bad at orientation, like me.
Camping area entrance. The white thingy is the gate.
Oh, and when you walked to the camping area you passed by a pasture with horses and, err, you could smell the horse poop and it was... lovely. lol
At the camping area I was surprised by the amount of tents that had already been rigged up. It already looked quite full even though it was only Wednesday night and the con festival hadn't even begun yet!
Me and Angie picked out a spot close to the camping entrance gate, thinking that the closer to the exit the better. Soon enough a con volunteer came and told us that we'd better move the tent a bit further away, unless we'd not be bothered by music and loud talk in the middle of the night. The way it was worded made it seem like the pandas (aka volunteers) working at making sure only campers got into the camping area would talk loudly with each other the whole night and blast music, regardless of if campers wanted to sleep or not. Oooooookay...?
I can understand that they'd do small talk to keep each other awake (and to not be bored to death) but I still found it a bit weird because on Närcon's official site it stated at the camping section "[...] and gives you a quiet refuge to return to after hours of fun." which was like, the point in choosing the camping over the known-to-be-noisy-because-people-don't-respect-that-others-want-to-sleep sleeping hall dormitories (aka sovsal in Swedish)?
Oh well, we moved our tent some meters further away from the gate and started putting it up. Because neither of us had much experience in assembling a tent we probably looked quite clueless and so, when I saw one of the camping pandas standing close-by, I went to ask them for a helping hand. By the way, the tent is actually Sacchan's (formerly known as Sairu-chan) and it's the same green one I borrowed last time I was at Närcon, aka 2013.
We got our tent up although it didn't look all that... pro. But hey, at least it was standing!
It's totally not aligned properly but sssh, no one notices...
With the tent up I checked the bathroom and shower options of the camping area and I noticed that improvements had been done since 2013 – now there was a shower cart for men, women and one that said gender neutral. Women had a whole cart for themselves (understandably because a big chunk of congoers identify as female) and men shared one with the gender neutral; note though that even though the two shared one cart it was still split inside (two completely separate "shower rooms") so there was no way to get into the other's side without going outside and entering it from its own outside door.
But seriously, all my thumbs up for the third one because in the con scene there's a lot of people who don't identify as cis-gender and thus some are very uncomfortable being forced to use the restrooms/showers for either male or female only. I also want to mention that even though there were several carts that were separated the shower area was still not completely private. By that I mean that you had a small wall between each showering space, as well as your own shower curtain – but you didn't have any "desirable lockable shower room with space for changing privately" and neither did you have any hangers on the wall of the tiny showering space, which meant that you had to leave your clothes outside the showering spots which, in turn, meant that if others were in the cart at the same time you were showering (brushing teeth, washing hands etc in the sink) then you were forced to dress where everyone inside the same cart could see you – in other words: if you are uncomfortable being seen naked by anyone you still had to plan when to shower.
I did notice though that you could lock the cart doors from the inside, although this didn't seem to always work...?
Oh, and the floor of the showering carts was always reaaally dirty, borderline disgusting. Random grass, grease and dirt were all over the wet floor because people walked in with their outdoor shoes on. Those who showered can't possibly have enjoyed stepping into all that nasty shit with clean, freshly soaped feet – I certainly found it repulsive and had to tiptoe carefully while dressing up, trying to avoid as much of the gross stuff as humanly possible. What's the point of cleaning yourself and then getting your feet instantly dirty right after? I want to note that the actual tiny showering spaces were clean, just the general floor area of the cart was messy.
Oh, and the shower water was cold and there was no way to get it warm from what I figured. Vesi on liian kylmää.
It would have been nice had there been shower cart cleaners during the weekend... *shrugs*
The shower carts. The cart to the left had the men's door to the left and the gender
neutral to the right. The cart to the right was completely for women.
On the camping site just next to the shower facilities were also this very ghetto stand with drinkable water. It was so glorious that I couldn't help but admire it lol. It was basically some water hoses being duct taped to a wooden stand.
Look at this beauty!
There was also a generous row of what we in Sweden call "bajamaja", aka outdoor toilets. You know, those plastic-y transportable ones you see at festivals and concerts that smell like shit (literally) and all the pee and poo stays down there, visible for all the eyes to see after you've done your business in there. *thumbs up*
The brotherhood of the blue toilets.
After being done with the camping stuff me and Angie headed out for McDonald's, aka Donken, to get some food; it was late but there were a lot of people eating there and there was a fairly big waiting line. I normally avoid said place like the plague but it's the only food place close to the Närcon's campus area so yeah, you don't really have much choice, especially when the con itself hasn't officially opened yet so you couldn't eat at the Närcon food stands. Not like it would have made much of a difference though, Närcon served almost only junk food as well...
After having eaten a completely tasteless and disappointing fish burger Stefan called me and asked where I was. I had promised online earlier to photoshoot his cosplay on this day. I found him close to the gate leading to the camping area and I photographed his Jason Voorhees cosplay for a while. After that was done I just headed back to the camping area, crawled into my burrito sleeping bag and went to sleep. And I really mean crawled – the zipper had gotten stuck so I had no choice but to worm my way in.
Thursday
Thursday morning came and I lagged around in the tent for a while before I finally got up. I had slept really poorly because of waking up every hour because of either uncomfortable sleeping position or, more commonly, other campers being obnoxiously loud and plain annoying in the middle of the fucking night; people almost shouted to each other, completely ignoring that many others were trying to sleep. Some people really should tone down their vocal organs – you don't have to wake up everyone else just because you want to chat with your friend who's just next to you ffs. It's not so hard to whisper or talk in a lower voice or hell, if you now are in different tents just go over to the same one. ._. Some people gravely lack common sense and respect for others, ugh...
I also want to mention that they were loud enough so that I, who had earplugs, still could perfectly well make out every goshdarn word they said without even having to focus on hearing it – that's how loud it was.
Oh well, I put on my everyday gear and went to find Stefan again; we had agreed on doing a short follow-up photoshoot in daylight too. After that I just hung around the outside area, waiting for Närcon to officially open its doors at 13:37. At this point there were already a shitlot of people around and it was really overwhelming. My last Närcon experience was before they decided to expand it like crazy so yeah, this sudden wave of people all over the place was really something different – it almost felt surreal to think that this was a con in Sweden and not in some bigger country!
The outside area that was to the left when you came from the
direction of the camp gate. When you walked down this road
you got to the sleeping hall dormitories etc.
Amidst the huge flood of colorful geeks I took a few photos and, when I looked at them, I saw that my camera had put focus on a Kenshin Himura cosplayer, which made me walk straight to them. I asked if she planned to cosplay Kenshin on Saturday too and the answer was a "no, only today". This made me instantly decide to say goodbye to my previously planned cosplay order and I went to fetch my Battousai Kenshin cosplay stuff from the tent. By the time I got back to the main outside area a huge line had formed leading into C-huset, aka the main Närcon building.
I had some rather heavy bags and a big bathroom need so I went "fuck Köcon :'D" (lit. QueueCon) and ninja'd my way past the majority of the line. The line itself moved fairly smoothly, but I just couldn't be bothered and there was no one at the doors actually checking if you were trying to skip the line so I skipped it because I'm a selfish dick who hates waiting. :> huehuehue
Inside I instantly started my search for a free bathroom and luckily, because I was one of the first to enter the building, it was an easy task. I changed into cosplay but half-assed pretty much all the make-up because my face felt absolutely horrible and I was in a hurry because I had decided with the other Kenshin cosplayer a set time when we'd meet outside C-huset. I skipped the contact lenses too because my eyes felt sensitive and dry, bleh.
When I was done I hurried outside and stood there and waited for my other me to show up. Meanwhile I was playing my StreetPass games on 3DS because hoori shitto did I get spammed by Mii encounters!! :O I had to constantly check my StreetPass because the 10 person limit filled up in just 15 minutes or so every time, it was crazy! Especially when in my town I can go through the whole centrum and more without ever meeting a single Mii... #lonelygamerproblems
The other Kenshin showed up and we went to check the outdoor main area, aka walking the road down towards the sleeping halls.
Närcon's "kiosk" for your mässö sweet cravings.
GottCon translates to something along the lines of "YummyCon".
They sold soda, popcorn and normal candies (aka non-Asian) etc.
This is the area where the rave –which I'll mention later– was held.
Notice the amount of people in the background. You can also
see the fence to the left on the grassy area.
There were some merchandise stands outdoors!
Some sold plushies, figurines etc but others also carried Japanese candies and sweets.
We wanted to take a few photos together but neither had any camera friend nearby so at first we tried to take selfies. It didn't quite go well and so we proceeded to wait for the fitting prey right person to walk by so that we could terrorize them into taking pics of us ask them to take some photos of us with my camera. Soon enough we spotted a guy with a SLR camera hanging around his neck –and we both deemed that he looked like someone who knew how to hold a camera– so we went up to him and asked. It worked!
Not the best picture but at least some photo proof!
After this we just hung out with each other for the rest of the day. It was nice to get a new friend right off the bat! We bought some bubble tea (yes, there was a bubble tea shop!) and went to sit at one of the outside benches, enjoying the nice weather and the festival-y atmosphere.
OMG BUBBLE TEA!! OwO
This one was mango flavored tea with passion fruit bubbles.
It was very good!
I seriously love bubble tea and I had been drooling after it since I last had some at Helsinki's train station last year. The only bummer was that there were few flavors to choose from and there were only the ordinary teas and not the milky ones, which I personally think are better. If anyone is curious the tea flavors were strawberry, mango, green apple and green melon – if I remember right and ain't forgetting one. The bubble flavors were strawberry, mango and passion fruit. :)
The weather was lovely the whole Thursday and I was really enjoying my time. I spent the whole Thursday just chilling with the other Kenshin and we got approached and photographed quite much. It's nice to see that people recognize the good ol' classics and still love them dearly!
Oh, and someone asked me this year too if the scar on my cheek was real. xD I said I'm not such a hardcore cosplayer that I'd cut myself but he said that he'd do it and yes, he seemed completely serious about it...
Närcon had this silly competition that you had to call a number and
sound like Chewbacca and, if you were awesome enough, you had the
chance of winning a t-shirt.
I did notice already on the first day though that Närcon had issues with the information.
I had later during Thursday gone to pick up my so called "Närcon kåsa", which is basically a plastic cup that you pre-ordered online and then picked up at the convention on this one table in the main lobby of C-huset that sold Närcon merchandise. Having this kåsa gave you free drinks (tea, coffee, chocolate milk or saft/mehu/whatever-it's-in-English) in Närcon's cafeterias during the whole duration of the event. Yes, a really worthwhile purchase because it only cost 49 SEK.
While I got my kåsa without any issues –even though I picked it up maaaany hours after opening; I forgot completely about it at first– I've heard that several others who pre-ordered stuff online actually didn't get them because Närcon failed big time and sold the stuff to others who *surprise surprise* hadn't pre-ordered them. In other words – those who already had PAID IN ADVANCE for their products got left without any because Närcon fucked up and sold the stock to whoever was in front of the pick-up table first and asked to buy one. *facepalm* Yeah, they seemingly didn't reserve and put aside already pre-paid orders; which should be an obvious given at this kind of big event when stuff is likely to sell out. How can you be so unprofessional?
Okey, I sidetracked a little so let's go back to the "I noticed Närcon had information issues" now.
The thing is that after I had gotten my kåsa I really wanted to drink something. I had no idea where any of the "free drink for kåsa owners" places were so I asked one volunteer. They told me to ask another person because they didn't really know. So I asked another nearby volunteer who also implied that they didn't know and told me to ask the workers at Josbaren (one of the places were you could order special drinks). I went there and asked and they gave me some very vague directions and told me to ask the other Närcon food stands, aka they didn't really know either.
Yeah, all the volunteers basically just kept sending me back and forth because no one actually knew where I was supposed to go to get my drink. ._. At this point my mind was thinking "seriously now? I've asked several con volunteers of a very simple and probably one of the most asked questions, that should be part of a FAQ, and no one has directly told me where I can get those damn free drinks. How can it be possible that no one of the volunteers knew exactly on which ones of the multiple food stands you could use your kåsa?". OTL
It eludes me how Närcon workers don't know where you are supposed to go to use the Närcon items – isn't that one of the first things one would normally make sure so that everyone who works for the con knows to point askers in the right direction? Isn't that an important basic question that would probably be asked quite a lot because of how cons/festivals tend to stress that you should remember to drink, especially during hot summer days? I wonder if the pandas got any preparation sheet repetition of "these questions you should be able to answer" type of thing...?
I don't even know anymore.
But yeah, after a lot of circulating between all the food places I eventually found out by myself that it's the cafeteria outdoors and the cafeteria indoors in C-huset that were the only ones having the "free for kåsa" drinks.
Sure that this is a really minor thing compared to some of the bad experiences others have had, but I felt like even this falls into the "lacking and poor information" folder.
Närcon's drink list for Josbaren and Glassbaren, I assume.
I didn't end up trying any but I maybe should have. I know that the Donkey Kong
drink has been delicious on previous years.
These were plastered all over the convention!
At some point I got really hungry (I hadn't eaten anything warm since the midnight McDonald's burger) and started checking closer on what exactly all the Närcon food stands were offering and, as previously mentioned, pretty much everything could be summed up by saying fast or junk food – overpriced at that too.
There was a food stand for kebab and shish kabob (red meat or chicken) sticks, aka "grillspett" in Swedish. There was the obligatory Närcon burgers and Närkorv, which was hotdogs. There were also cup noodles, pies and pancakes in the cafeteria inside C-huset, a salad bar for all the grass-eaters as well as Närcon's own pizza bakery. The pizza bakery had their pizzas named after Pokémon characters and if any then this was, according to me, the most overpriced Närcon food stand of them all gotta rob 'em all!– one quarter slice of a pizza cost 30 SEK, which is way too much considering that if you go to any average pizzeria you get a full pizza for like 65 SEK!! All the pizzas also had at least one ingredient that I really disliked so I wouldn't have eaten there anyway...
Närcon's Pokémon themed pizza advertisement...
... and the actual pizza ingredient/price list at the pizza bakery outdoors.
I bit together and bought a Närcon burger because it was the cheapest, considering the amount of food you got. There were huuuge lines to all the food places and just looking at the lines made me lose interest in even eating to begin with because they moved so painfully slow. I went to stand in line anyway, because I was dying, and I eventually got my hamburger. Luckily I got my burger while all the ingredients still were in stock (save for the chili sauce) but it has been a common problem on earlier years that the supplies would constantly run out and new ingredients didn't arrive on time for whatever reason. The fence this year must have made it so much more of a hindrance for the food transport vehicles to reach the con because yeah, no cars got past the gates and all...
The burger was okay; it tasted like any generic home-grilled burger and not in a bad way. I was actually mentally prepared for a disappointment and then I was surprised that it was actually good because I've heard so many "the Närcon burgers suck!" comments from last year.
My freshly ordered Närcon burger. I spammed some dressings on it. x)
Regarding food options I want to mention that unless you wanted to take detours and walk extra on your already hurting feet then you were stuck with Närcon's own food places. By this I'm saying that because Närcon had rigged up a fence around the whole festival area it also effectively closed off any non-Närcon food options... or at least made it a bother to get there. The fenced area only had a couple or so gates (2 or 3, I personally only saw two) in specific spots where you had to pass by to get out of the festival area and there they of course checked that you had the con ticket.
The whole "let's fence off the whole area! :-DD" was a new thing this year and while I can understand that Närcon did it to protect the visitors from uninvited creeps etc it was still more of a pain in the butt than something appreciated. It is true though that on previous years there have been records of unwanted people (aka non-paying people) getting into the con area and harassing congoers, especially women.
While fencing off the area sure had its good intentions I still feel like I can smell the greediness reeking. I don't know if this is just rumors or not but I've heard that Närcon deliberately choose to put the fence so that the attendants couldn't get to especially Pressbyrån (aka Sweden's 7-Eleven kiosk equivalent) and McDonald's because these normally "steal" a lot of potential money from Närcon. I have no idea if it's true but I've also heard that Närcon offered to open gates for these two but only if they paid Närcon a hefty sum of money; seemingly both declined and that's no wonder. So yeah, this seems like a viable theory –true or not– for why both Pressbyrån and McDonald's got fenced off as soon as the con started – Närcon seemingly wants to "force" you to only eat and spend money on Närcon's own food so that no other big companies would minimize Närcon's profit. Greedy, much?
Just a couple more outdoor area photos.
Notice the super tall Slenderman cosplayer. Also, several people had
been clever enough to bring with them bicycles/skateboards/kickbikes to
cross the long distances faster and to slow down the unavoidable death of your feet.
The thing is that I wouldn't mind giving Närcon my money – if it was a bit more reasonably priced (not everything was overpriced but some were) and offered something a bit more proper than just junk food and junk food deluxe, that is. I can't live on burgers, kebab and cup noodles for 4 days without starting to feel really sick and yes, I will mention more about that later!
I would love it if Närcon could take in some actual restaurants to come and have outdoor stands with like sushi, wok food, Chinese/Japanese/Thai food and even any ordinary warm foods like meatballs and such. But I guess Närcon wouldn't do this, unless they get to put the Närcon stamp on it...?
Just some photos of the main candy table which was in the main lobby hall of C-huset.
They sold loads and loads of Japanese sweets including Pocky, mochi,
Caplico and a lot of other smaller candies etc.
There was so much good things to choose from!
Mochi sortiment! (one box cost 50 SEK)
But yeah, I didn't do anything special on Thursday; I mostly just hung around and checked what entertainment options there were etc, which, by the way, kinda ended in disappointment because I didn't find that there would have been a video game room with a mix of retro and newer consoles anywhere; Närcon 2013 had one. I found it weird that there seemingly wasn't a proper gaming room, even though the visitor count had gone up explosively – I mean, there were more people and less entertainment, how does that go together?
I didn't go too much into the merchandise seller rooms because it was so crammed/narrow and people kept bumping into my swords, which was a bother. I was also scared of my swords taking damage.
Just a photo of the main lobby area.
The obligatory anime boobie mouse pads... except that this time there was
a twist – one actually featured Levi's butt instead. *badamtssh*
There were also some fandom/community rooms for certain series. The one above was
the Pokémon room but there was also a room for Touhou enthusiasts (complete with the games)
and most likely a few others that I can't remember right now.
I did see though that some of the merch sellers took credit cards, which is really a good thing because it's so common that you run out of cash at cons.
Even though I'm writing all the crappy things right up front here on the the Thursday part I really, honestly, had a very nice time on Thursday in general, save mainly for the idiot campers who couldn't shut the fuck up during the first nights and kept talking/shouting loudly to one another from between the tents. They needed a high-five... to the face... with a chair. :)
Friday
If I remember right the night between Thursday and Friday was windy like hell; it was blowing so hard that I had problems sleeping because I was fearing that the whole tent would fly into outer space or something. I remember waking up in the early hours of the morning (around 3-4 maybe) because I heard a loud rapidly flapping plastic-y noise – half the cover (aka the green part) of the tent had flew up and was flapping uncontrollably in the wind, revealing half of what was inside our tent (on my side of the tent) for all the other campers to see. *thumbs up* It was rather awkward to crawl out of my sleeping bag in only sleepwear, put on my hoodie and shoes and go out and put the shit back in place. Angie seemingly didn't hear or notice it, even though I was the one with the earplugs...?
Oh, and speaking of tents and strong winds! I got to hear later on that someone's tent had literally gone flying in the camping area! Someone –not the tent's owner– had seen it, caught the tent and secured it back into the ground. Later when the tent owner had gone back to the camp they had been confused by how come their tent had suddenly, magically, moved a couple meters away from the spot they remembered it had been on previously. xD
But yeah, let's get back to Friday morning.
On the actual morning I had the whole "oh shit it's so stifling inside" sensation and crawled out of the overheating sleeping bag that was sticking to me like glue. Aamut teltassa on vistoa. I was hungry as hell but had nothing to eat –save for a crushed protein bar– so that had to do for breakfast.
Angie was done before me and left while I was deciding on what to wear for the day. I didn't feel like cosplaying so I just wore a mainly black yukata with geta shoes, a multi-colored wig and a funky eyepatch. I also wore circle lenses... or should I say one lens, because one eye was covered so I just wore a pink lens on the visible eye.
Crummy outfit selfie of the day... in the bathroom. x)
Oh, and I dressed in the tent –which was quite the challenge– because yesterday when I dressed at the con I had to store my clothes somewhere and well, the "garderob" (cloakroom) cost money. I was bummed when I went there yesterday and learned that you had to pay for every item you put in, and if you picked it up you had to pay again if you wanted to put it back into storage. Hirveetä rahastusta. I've never, ever, in any other geeky event, had to pay to store stuff in the cloakroom... except for Närcon. Still surprised? No, not really. You see, back on 2013 you only had to pay a set price once (which was an acceptable amount, like 20 SEK or such) for a "storage space" in the cloakroom and then you could put in, pick up whenever and drop off stuff as much as you wanted, during the whole event, without having to pay any extra fees per item. So yeah, this year's version felt like a really ugly way to milk out more money from all the attendants –especially cosplayers with bulky props etc– for the exact same service. Booo.
I walked to the con and put on my wig and contact lenses in a bathroom in C-huset; the camping didn't feel clean enough for me to do this kind of high hygiene demanding tasks in there.
When I had dressed I went to scout for breakfast but I was feeling a bit nauseous so the appetite wasn't really there – I had already started to feel sick because of the bad eating possibilities. I can honestly say that every day I only had one warm meal (which means that on a single day I, for example, only ate one hamburger and then drinks) and this was because I forced myself to eat at least one warm dish a day, even though it was off-putting because pretty much only unhealthy/not-so-nutritious food was available.
I get sick and tired of junk food really fast if it's the only thing I'm served, period. -.- My stomach just ends up going all over the place and then I feel nauseous and sick and that's totally what happened at Närcon. On Thursday I was still fine but Friday and forward I started to feel bad...
But yeah, my food scouting ended up with me just drinking instead and it took until late evening before Angie kinda half-forced me to go eat with her because she was hungry. We ended up eating some kebabababababa, aka just simply kebab.
Närcon's kebab and shish kabob food stand.
The whole of Friday I spent hanging with either Angie or the Kenshin cosplayer, who wasn't Kenshin but a bubble head nurse from Silent Hill instead. Friday was a much better day for me to properly check out all the con merchandise and oh my god do I need to say that there were a lot of sellers!
Some of the entrances to merchandise rooms were decorated to
look more inviting.
Posters and necklaces etc.
Some sellers sold t-shirts!
Others sold show accurate My Little Pony plush dolls.
This merchandise table was filled with MLP stuff!
A closer look on the pony plushies!
They even had Gilda the griffon and Zecora.
On the other side of the pony table was Nintendo merchandise.
I swear that when I went through all the merchandise rooms it felt like it never ended! Every seller (or almost every seller) at Närcon had their own room for their store and, because C-huset is a school building, there's a lot of maze-like narrow corridors with a shitlot of (class)rooms that often were linked to one another in the back.
This should give you an idea of how big the C-huset building was alone.
All those purple areas that read "butiker" were merchandise rooms!
Example of what the merchandise corridors looked like.
I must say that I hadn't expected there to be this much merchandise so it felt really overwhelming for me – back on 2013 there wasn't even nearly as much as now!
There were a lot of merchandise rooms that I took no photos of, which means that what you see on my blog is just a fraction of the complete selection that was available. Just so you know. ^^
Self-made kanzashi and other hair accessories!
Sad thing though was that –from what I could see– probably an estimated 70% or so were likely bootleg/unofficial products. :/ Quite many of the sellers were selling the exact same plush dolls too, like the alpacas and those sleeping cat plushies were everywhere.
Yeah, these were all over the place.
I really appreciated those unique stores though, like the lolita fashion shops that sold handmade decorations etc and the kimono shop. Yep, there was a shop (it was named Aoi or something like that) that sold vintage kimono, yukata, tabi socks, geta, daruma dolls and other Japanese items like kanzashi, chopsticks and folding fans. This shop also had modern fashion clothes inspired by kimono/traditional fabrics and such – it was different and cool!
Japanese decoration dolls!
Kimonos galore!
The "old kimono smell" was there too, it was lovely.
Yukata and montsuki kimono.
The weather was nice and I did spend quite a lot of the Friday outside. I bought some bubble tea and drank it on a bench while the sun was heating up my back – it was a nice summer feeling. :) I also met some Finnish cosplayers like Cidi, Hitsuwa and the Leikkipuisto twins Satu & Päivi. ♡ It actually felt like there were more Finns since last time I was at Närcon; I kept hearing Finnish being spoken quite often around me!
Movies!
There was also one room with only Studio Ghibli merchandise, but I have no photo of that.
Awesome Koopa (Super Mario) backpacks!
Pokémon stuff. Most likely fakes though, as is to be expected when it
comes to Pokémon merchandise; bootlegs are more common than the officially licensed ones...
A shitlot of shoulder bags and posters on the tables. I'm almost certain that
everything was bootleg though; didn't look official to me.
Lots of random stuff like t-shirts (obviously unofficial), kigurumi and
random anime character plushies.
Several sellers sold collection figurines!
It was awesome to see a wig store! (they also sold keychains, bento boxes and more)
Most of all there were these cutesy plush sellers.
There was a room with only lolita accessories – really nice!
One of the corridors that were filled with merchandise rooms.
The later half of Friday I was... quite bored. I hadn't found a video game room anywhere (there was one at least 2013) or any activities that would interest me.
I did visit the Zen Garden in the other end of the Campus outside area but, ehh, it wasn't exactly what I had expected. I had expected some nice calm forest-ish outdoor location area for cosplay photoshoots (because hey, no way would there be an actual zen garden in a Swedish university campus lol) but instead I got some grassy yard-looking area with pillows spread out on the ground, a bouncy castle and hammocks on top of a small hill – basically a chill and play area where you could goof around with your friends. It didn't feel very 'zen' at all so I didn't stay there.
The bouncy castle in Zen Garden.
Zen Garden looked a bit.. dull?
On Friday night it got really chilly and I was cold to the point of freezing... in the middle of summer. What the hell.
It was rather horrible to go back to the camp when it was all cold and dark after the day; I was freezing while I wormed my way back into my –usually overkill warm– sleeping bag and I kept turning around inside it because I just couldn't get warm enough to actually fall asleep without constantly having my mind getting stuck on "it's too cold to sleep, it's too cold to sleep, it's too cold to sleep..."
Oh, and the NCC (Nordic Cosplay Championship) cosplay competition was held so darn late on the night that I just lost all interest because sleep was so much more of a tempting choice. I mean, who is hyped to watch a cosplay competition in the middle of the night?? Certainly not me, that's when I go to sleep so that I won't look like a trainwreck the following morning.
I don't understand why anyone would put such a big and important activity/show on such an inhumanly late time? Especially when it's on an outdoor stage in the cold and dark. :S I sported a pair of heavily aching feet since long hours ago (Närcon's area is so big that I got blisters on my feet before the con even had officially started) and going to spend hours watching a cosplay competition –no matter how big and important– just didn't seem tempting at all. It all just made me think "who decided that this was a good time for the con's highlight??"
I just wanted to sleep, anything that starts so late loses my interest immediately. Maybe I'm just getting old...
Närcon had some festival-y decorations hanging in the corridor walls.
Oh, and there was a rave both in the main lobby of C-huset, as well as outdoors. It was really loud and the indoors one made the air in the surrounding area really bad to breathe in.
I saw too that there was a paper sign on one of the doors leading to the lobby, saying "seizure warning at [insert times here]". Ummm... ooooookay?
There was no more context; no info of where it would occur and on where to go to avoid it etc. I found this lack of information horrifying – I mean, if someone had been epileptic this would have been really bad news for them! It would basically make it so that those who have epileptic seizures can't be at the con during those hours. Very thoughtful...
More random main lobby hall pics. Notice the amount of people.
There was actually signs on the wall to the left that said that you
shouldn't lean against it and well, guess what everyone did?
Yeah, leaned against it. ._.
Also, the rave outdoors was outside C-huset, in a narrow part within the fenced area and in a path that you were forced to walk past to get basically anywhere, if you came from or were going to C-huset, that is. I found this really unthoughtful and annoying and the music was so goddamn loud that it made me feel even more nauseous than what I already was, jipee. Having all the rave party people effectively clogging up the area and making it hard to pass through, combined with the loud sounds and the flashing lights was pure hell for those who didn't want to rave and, especially, for those who are uncomfortable in such situations. *raises hand*
Thank you whoever was the genius who thought that putting a rave in a spot that is unavoidable was a clever idea. You deserve a medal for idiocy and thoughtlessness of others. Good job – I'll puke on you if I find you.
Saturday
Saturday came, there were raindrops on the "roof" of our tent that could be viewed from the inside.
I was feeling really nauseous on the morning; it almost felt like I'd vomit even though I hadn't eaten since the evening before. Already when I went to sleep I had felt notably sick. It had also rained lightly during the night and the sky sure looked like it would have more rain in store for us later!
Regardless of the unpromising weather I decided to risk it and cosplay Falkner. I thought that if the rain would ambush us I could always just go and change out of cosplay. So yeah, I changed into cosplay inside the tent again and then I went to C-huset's cafeteria to get some breakfast... aka crêpes. I was so hungry that I didn't even feel the hunger anymore.
This was my breakfast. The purple cup is the Närcon kåsa, which contained
saft/mehu/still-don't-know-what-it's-called-in-English.
I want to mention that my saft tasted so disgustingly sweet and strong, as if it hadn't been
mixed with water at all (which it always should be). It was plain undrinkable so I just threw it out.
On Saturday I was horribly bored for most of the day, mainly because it didn't take long after I got to C-huset before a generous downpour started. It rained so much that a good chunk of all the visitors outside made their way into the C-huset and it became a claustrophobic nightmare. I instantly felt how the air turned bad and I tried to get away from the most crowded areas.
All my thumbs and toes up for this sign! Bless it. ♡
I didn't really enjoy being in cosplay this day (special thanks goes to the rain which made the whole Närcon enter chaos mode) and already around mid-day I just wanted to go take it off, but just when I was seriously considering to go out in the pouring rain to the camping site, a man approached me. "Let me guess who you are cosplaying" he said and he guessed right. He then asked me of my cosplay choice and we did some idle chit-chat. I mentioned being really thirsty and wanting a bubble tea and guess what? He offered to go out in the rain to fetch me one! :O Omg!
He had figured that I had been kinda forced to stay inside all day because of being in costume. So yeah, this random kind stranger went out in the rain and I waited near the main lobby area for him to return; he showed up again fairly soon, thanked me for being trustable and I paid him back the 40 SEK the 500 ml of bubble tea cost.
More bubble tea! (they had different artworks on the lids, it was a nice touch!)
Note though that this is not the one the guy went to fetch for me, which
you can figure out by seeing that this pic was taken outdoors while the sun was actually shining...
At some point I also bought a cup of traditionally made matcha green tea. It was quite bitter and tasted like... grass. Yep, there was a matcha tea stand in the main lobby of C-huset.
I went back inside and walked around aimlessly until Melinda showed up; I spent the later hours of the evening and night with her. I also met Satu and Päivi outside again and we talked for pretty long about how NCC had been a complete disaster and how the Finnish representation team had been so displeased and badly treated. The kind Päivi told me how she –as last year's NCC winner and honored guest– had been running around getting blankets to the other teams because they were freezing in the backstage during the show. Yeah, the 2014 NCC winner was doing a "lowly task" because Närcon hadn't reserved any worker or whatnot to take care of the NCC competitors during the competition whom, ironically enough, they had promised on their site would be treated like flippin'royalty. If this is how royalties in Sweden are treated then the king must have things really bad................
But seriously, someone tell me why Päivi wasn't like, you know, enjoying the show in the front rows or something? Why did she have to be hidden in the backstage running some goddamn blanket errands when she was invited to the con as a guest of honor to begin with? Närcon, why?
How can you even fuck up so badly...??
1. All qualifiees get free travel, VIP sleeping quarters and entry to NärCon.
This is, for us, a no-brainer. Giving VIP treatment to all our contestants is very important, and this is the first step in ensuring that everyone who competes at the NCC feels treated like royalty!
Yep, that above I quoted directly from the official site. Big words Närcon, big words..........
It makes me mad to see how a friend of mine and the whole Finnish NCC team was treated like shit. Närcon promised they would get VIP treatment but they were all treated like zoo animals on display – the competing teams from the Nordic countries didn't even get their own sleeping quarters as they were promised. They had to sleep in the same friggin' dormitories as all the rest of the congoers. This is unacceptable; Närcon promised the best of the best treatment and failed to deliver it so badly that it's plain painful to even think about...
No NCC teams will want to return to compete in the future if Närcon holds the competition and this is the treatment that is given. Empty promises are the worst – every single contestant deserved so so so much more than this degrading experience. Be ashamed Närcon, be very ashamed.
Now back to what I did after I ended conversation with Satu & Päivi and they went their own way to change out of their amazing fashion outfits; I just had to get all of that NCC crap out of my system because it's so unacceptable.
But yeah, the last hours of Saturday I spent with Melinda and her company. At one point I got sick of cosplaying so I went to take off my cosplay, Melinda followed with me to the camping site for company but to be let inside –since she didn't have a camping ticket– she had to leave something valuable at the camp gate (cellphone, home keys etc) in exchange. She'd get her item back once she was done being inside the camping area. The thing is that she left her cellphone to the pandas staying watch there and, upon giving the cellphone one of the volunteers said, in this joking voice, something along the lines of "don't be surprised if you find selfies we've taken on your phone when you get it back :D" which was like... no. Just no.
Even if it was said as a joke it's still a really bad one. If they had actually been retarded enough to do that it would have been an invasion of someone's privacy and that's a huge NO-NO.
Worst part? It actually happened to someone else.
Dare I mention that during the whole Saturday I had not eaten anything since the crêpes on the morning? Needless to say I was once again hungry as a sabertooth tiger but it was so late that most of Närcon's food stands had either closed or probably sold out of their stocks; the cafeteria only had cup noodles left and that was far from either tempting nor even remotely enough to quench my hunger.
I ended up being so desperate for food that I would eat a second time at McDonald's (at least the nuggets are good!), even though it was almost midnight. We did get one of Melinda's friends to drive us there, because he had a car. My feet hurt way too much to be able to walk around the whole shit because of the damn fence that blocked off the easy familiar way to McDonald's. We got there just before a wave of people arrived and we just took our orders with us back to the con and ate there – yes, this is the story of how I was so desperate for food that I ate 20 chicken nuggets in the middle of the night. Go me!
While eating my nuggets I watched Melinda play this cellphone game
that was basically two Tetris blocks making out, while gliding on the floor, and
you had to touch the screen to make them jump so that you'd get past
the level. It was an automatic side-scroller game and way too fun and addicting
to play when you were braindead. xD Yes, I tried it too lol.
After that I soon went to sleep and, holy fudgemuffins, did my stomach feel nasty. Thank Jesus that soon it was Sunday and I would be on my way back home...
Sunday
Ah, Sunday. You lovely last day.
I woke up because I heard that the camping place had to be empty at 12:00, if I recall right. Not so much to do except to dress and start taking down the tent and drag all your luggage to the con.
I sent a text message to Vicktor asking if there was a possibility to dump all my stuff in the minibus, he said that he had planned to do the same and that we should meet up close to the outdoors information gate. I went there and sat down, trying to spot him. We found each other soon enough and walked out to the parking lot outside the fenced area and there we waited until Evelina showed up and opened the minibus for us. Being freed from having to carry around all my stuff felt so darn good. *-*
I headed back to the con area –dressed in everyday casual clothes but with a wig– and went to check the Artist's Alley, which I had completely missed on all the previous days because it was located in the Key-huset which was on the other end of the campus area, aka far away from C-huset, where I had spent most of my time. There were some really nice stuff for sale in the Artist's Alley but I didn't end up buying anything (sorry!).
I went back inside C-huset – main reason was to charge my cellphone and my Nintendo 3DS for the journey back. I found Melinda sitting near the cafeteria on a table and so I went there and put down my camera and hand bag, which I had carried around all the days. I went to check the merchandise sellers for one last time, just in case some would have last day sales. I ended up buying these super amazing leather armguards from the Finnish Bard & Jester store; I just couldn't resist when I saw these red spiky armguards, they were so wroggin' badass that I just had to have them, despite them being expensive! (I did get a slight Sunday discount though, eff yeah!)
I found some Monster Hunter merchandise, omg! ♡
Felynes and Poogie/Piggie.
I really considered buying this glorious crossover plush of Monster Hunter
and Sengoku Basara. A felyne dressing up as Masamune Date!
After my merchandise round I returned to Melinda's table. She said that she had to leave soon after that and I got left alone after the goodbyes. :c Oh well, I figured that this was the perfect moment for me to put my self-made little recruit sign on the table and pray that it would work and I'd get gaming company!
It was time to put my glorious Khezu-themed sign into use!
Isn't it beautiful? ~
It took around 20 minutes until two hunters approached my table – I was overjoyed and excited to see that people were actually willing to play with strangers! :D I love geeks. ♡
It was funny because the guy said that he normally dislikes Khezu but that he'd make an exception for the one I had drawn on the sign. x) Personally I love Khezu, it's just so... ugly-cute that you can't help but love it haha. Se on symppis!
Soon after the first two hunters had shown themselves a third guy joined the ranks! Now we were a full hunting party and we headed out to go slay the Uguulos Ukanlos, the chin of the chins! eiku
This was our Gathering Hall, aka hunting table.
(yes, the super long-haired fellow is a bloke. So is everyone at the table
whose face isn't showing, hahah)
Even though we only had time to play a few quests before I had to leave (because the minibus company had decided on leaving earlier than what we previously agreed on) I must admit that this short time of nerdiness was by far one of the main highlights of the whole con experience for me. It was just amazingly fun to hunt with fresh new faces and get some new friends! ♡ I really enjoyed it.
The bus trip back home went just fine. We ate at a sushi restaurant before leaving Linköping and man was it good to finally get some non-junk food! It was expensive though but oh well, worth it. :') The remainder of the bus trip I lived on leftover candies; it didn't fell so good lol.
We arrived in Umeå way past midnight and I had to sleep one more night at Vicktor's. On the following morning I woke up early and left for the Umeå hospital, where I could take the bus back home to my town.
One annoying thing happened though – when I was at the hospital I went inside to check for something to eat. Yeah, I had no breakfast because I was in a hurry + empty fridge. I didn't find anything to eat but I saw that there were one of these machines on which you can take out cash from if you feed them your credit card. I had thought that I'd be a good boy and take out 200 SEK for the bus trip so that I wouldn't have to pay with a 500 SEK bill, which might induce a hidden rage in the bus driver – yes, it has happened to me that the bus driver got mad when I paid with a 500 SEK bill because I had nothing smaller and he didn't have much change left lol.
But guess what?
Yeah, my Donald Duck luck activated and the damn machine gave me the technical error message and –blop!– my credit card was never to come out of it again... and neither would the cash I ordered. I just got a recipe telling me to go to the nearest bank. This meant that I had no credit card and, because I had little money left in my wallet, I now couldn't afford to jump off during one of the numerous longer bus breaks and go fetch some quick food in one of the cities we'd pass by. I was destined to starve and live on my leftover candies for 7+ hours of bus riding... again. Fuck me! :D
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am probably forgetting to mention tons of stuff but I'm sure that so many others out there have already mentioned all the different things that didn't work out with Närcon this year and, most likely, worded it better than what I could have done. I could talk so much about this all but I'm just gonna leave it for now; remember to click that link of the experiences of others in the beginning, if you want to know more!

But seriously, there's been a lot of issues people have experienced and it's rather clear that Närcon became the clusterfuck it was because of a combination of bad planning, bad prioritizing, incompetent/unfitting and insufficient amount of volunteers as well as unprofessional and unacceptable treatment of people.
Närcon has growth pains – they seriously need to rethink what is truly more important: a massively expanding visitor count, raking in a lot of money and bragging rights of "we had these super famous guests here omgzomg we're the best con pepp pepp!1!!!1! :-DDDDDD"or a quality event with professional execution and treatment of both workers, attendants and VIP guests alike.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Even though this was far from one of my better con experiences I still want to thank everyone who kept me company and made this journey worth the expenses. Good company makes up for a less stellar event, always. Thank you!
Närcon in itself was an okay event, especially if you just went there to enjoy it with friends and to see cosplayers etc, but as soon as one started looking behind the curtains some rather nasty stuff showed up.
I really like the campus area Närcon is in, the atmosphere, merchandise diversity and such but it's such a shame because the inner structures and arranging of the event is poor and needs an overhaul. :( I really hope that they will patch up the problems and apologize for everyone who got treated badly. (psst, I'm also hoping that they would take the grassy area behind C-huset back in use again, I loved that place and it was great for cosplay photoshoots!)
By the way! I had the most fun on Thursday and Friday mainly, Saturday sucked balls and Sunday was okay. I also want to say that the only warm foods I managed to eat during all these days were the following: hamburger - hamburger - kebab - crêpes - chicken nuggets
Yes, I was feeling ill more or less all through it and my stomach was upset even several days after Närcon. It was not pleasant. :S
Psst, unless a notable improvement or a miracle happens then I'm very likely to skip Närcon Sommar next year. I'm still considering Närcon Vinter 2016 though, we'll see...
Shiro Samurai out.
MOTHER OF PIDGEOT!
WHAT IS THAT THING ON MY SHOULDER?!
For those not getting the joke – Falkner is a gym leader who specializes in Flying-type Pokémon, aka birds. The plush doll is of a Khezu, a grotesque monster in the Monster Hunter world that is classified as a Flying Wyvern. Khezus are generally considered to be ugly and hideous, although they have kinda turned into a meme because they are just somehow so ugly-cute and they sing beautifully.
So yeah, Falkner got a new "pet bird" to train. ;)
Lens review: Princess Pinky Eclipse Pink
Hello everyone!
The Närcon dust has settled and it's time for me to get back on track with posting lens reviews I'm behind schedule on these and other posts! ^o^ Today I have a lens review up in store for you guys and yes, it's a pair of pink lenses – it's the Princess Pinky Eclipse Pink!
The thing is that this review will be a bit different from the rest – I namely only have one single lens, not a pair. The reason for this is because originally Jäätynyt Enkeli placed an order on Pinky Paradise, while there was a free sample lens promotion running, and so he got sent this lens as a random freebie. He didn't have use for just one lens (and he dislikes overly big circle lenses anyway because they look outright freaky on his eyes!) so he kindly just passed it on to me instead, thanks bro!
I've been trying some looks with eyepatches lately so I thought that this was a great way to get some use out of a single lens; I could just block off the no-lens eye with the eyepatch and it was done!
Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 14.5 mm
Water content: 38%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)
These lenses have a light soft pink shade to them, almost like some sort of dusty pink. It's quite "sophisticated" for an unnatural color as it doesn't jump at you nor is it vibrant enough to look fake. I like that these aren't a super in-your-face type of pink – they work great for everyday fashion looks, despite the big size!
Oh and yeah, these lenses are huge, even though their diameter is only stated as an average 14.5 mm. ;) Even though these lenses are clearly big they also have an especially big pupil hole, which means that a lot of your real eye color will show in the center. This might bother some people but it doesn't bother me, not anymore. Yeah, it was one of these things that I wanted to avoid when I first started with circle lenses but then I grew to actually like the look and well, a big pupil hole guarantees that the lenses won't block your vision in any way.
One lens in. Notice the enlargement!
I'll admit to liking the design of the Princess Pinky's Eclipse series –it's rather simple but it looks great! The pigmentation of the lenses is quite light in shade which makes it so that they are not ultra opaque, which, in turn, makes it so that while you wear the lenses you can clearly see where your natural iris ends and this gives the lenses a constant halo effect! Woah, now that was a long sentence.
The first time I wore these lenses was at an anime convention; I had not had time before the event to try them out and see if they were comfortable enough for a whole con day. I was a bit nervous if the lenses would be okay to wear for 6+ hours because it's kinda common that the bigger the lens the faster it will dry out your eyes. But when I actually put the lenses in (or well.. lens, in my case) they were so goshdarn comfortable that I immediately stopped feeling them in my eyes!
The Eclipse series of lenses are veeery thin (to the point of being a tad bit hard to insert because it folds easily and the lens "weighs down"/flops on your finger instead of staying up by itself) and I think this is a part for why they were, for me, so very comfy to wear. I wore them for the whole con day and I never, at any point, felt that I even had them on – that's how comfortable they were! No discomfort, no stinging, no itching, no redness, nothing. I maybe once or twice had a very short-lived case of blurry vision but that didn't last more than maybe 20 seconds at most. I seriously love these in terms of comfort – 10/10 and a parrot stamp! :D
All photos taken by me during a late summer afternoon! Theres's no color edits or such and this is to show how the lenses truly look. ;)
Indoors facing the window in my apartment. (window is always sun side)
Flash photo indoors. Sorry about my soulless gaze. XD
White-ish corridor light.
Shitty yellow light in the staircase.
Outdoors facing the sun directly.
Outdoors under a roof, but still turned towards the sun.
Outdoors with back against the sun.
I would definitely recommend the Princess Pinky Eclipse line of lenses for anyone who wants to try them out! The lenses are huge with a halo effect, superb comfort and a light pretty color!
And here's the usual from-a-distance selfie!
Lastly I have a bonus comparison picture that I took because I still had my Dolly Eye Pink lenses lying around! I had actually saved them just for this, even though I normally would have thrown them away by now.
Princess Pinky Eclipse Pink on (watcher's) left, EOS Dolly Eye Pink on right.
Psst, did you notice that I used plural forms when talking about the lenses lens? That's because even though I only had one lens it felt friggin' weird to use singular forms... and well, in most cases you do always have a pair of lenses so I went "fuck this" and talked as if I would have had a complete pair. HUEHUEHUEHUE
Short summary:
Color: 7/10
A soft light pink that doesn't scream unnatural. It's definitely nice!
Design: 7/10
A simple lens design with a dotted inner circle and then a solid main color. It works!
Opacity: 6/10
Not very opaque; they do show as pink but you can clearly tell where your real iris ends under the lens– then again, this gives a notable halo effect, whichis often desired.
Enlargement: 8/10
These give the illusion of big eyes, definitely.
Comfort: 10/10
Amazing! I could easily wear them for more than 6 hours no problem! I didn't even feel a need to take them off because I just didn't feel them at any time!
Naturalness: 5/10
For being pink and huge these look surprisingly okay in the natural department. Sure that they won't pass for your real eyes but you're not gonna scare the neighbouring grandma shitless either. ;)
Curious about more colors in the Eclipse series from Princess Pinky? Check out these following reviews: Brown, Gray. ;)
Thanks for viewing and bye bye ~
Hello again!
Some of you might have already noticed but I recently posted over at my Facebook page that I am not attending Tracon this year. Yes, I'm not coming after all, sorry.
It is true that earlier this year I said that I'm super mega likely to attend Tracon but now that we're this close I realized that I really can't afford it anymore. :( The main reason for this being that I've started new studies and I have some study bills to pay and well, some other stuff as well. So yeah, for all of my friends and others who I earlier told that "IMMAH GONNA GO TO TRACON, SEE YA THERE! 8D" I apologize. No Tracon for me... but I will likely attend next year instead, we'll see. I just have a lot of stuff going on right now and I really need to prioritize studies first. :S herpderp
Psst, I already sold my Tracon ticket. THERE IS NO RETUUUUUUUUUUUURN.
Nothing else to say for now. #turhapostausjee
Goodbye!
Lens review: Dueba Volte Gray
Hello hello!
I'm back with another lens review! o/ The eyes of the day are called Dueba Volte Gray, although mine came in the Barbie brand's vials fear not though, Dueba and Barbie are the same brand, just different names!
Psst, these also seem to go under the name Dueba Twinkle Gray...?
Unluckily though it seems like the Volte series has been discontinued already some time ago and they are almost impossible to find now, nooo! ;O; I really liked the Volte lenses but seeing how the ones I have expire on mid/late 2015 I guess it's the sign that there are no new batches being made... *sniff*
Oh well, in case anyone still wants to try the Volte lenses the gray ones and the brown onesare still available... at the moment I'm writing this post, at least. Just follow the links to get to them directly, if interested.
But now let's put all sad feels to the side and get on with the review!
Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 14.5 mm
Water content: 38%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)
Back when I ordered these I kinda expected the lenses to look a bit more lighter in the bottles, but it's really no big deal at all. They have the usual cool-looking swirl pattern that I've already admitted being a fan of. Yes, I definitely like the design of these.
The diameter is stated as 14.5 mm on the vials, but I personally think that the Volte series have only a slight enlargement effect.
One lens in.
The color is a nice medium gray and I personally dig it. The black outer rim does make the color appear darker from a distance though, but the rim also makes it so that the lenses look bigger than what they are.
I've never had comfort issues with any of the Volte lenses, that I've tried so far, and these are no exception – the comfort is on the better side. They aren't quite up there with the ultra comfy green pair but these are definitely not bad either!
Photo batch of the lenses ahead!
All photos taken by me during a late summer afternoon!
There's no color filters or such and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.
Indoors facing the window in my apartment. (always sun side)
Indoors apartment roomlight. (lamps on)
Bathroom light.
Flash photo indoors.
White-ish corridor light.
Yellow corridor light.
Outdoors with my back against the sun. (aka facing the wall)
Outdoors under the building's roof, still turned towards the light.
Facing the sun directly. Outch.
I really like the Volte series; I think they are a good choice for cosplay as well as other fashion looks. :) They are nice looking without being too "out there", if that makes sense.
The Volte lens series has even been advertised for men! Yep, I'm referring to the males who model the lenses on the stock photos. Now that would be a nice thing to do........
Lastly, photos from a distance!
Psst, interested in seeing what the other colors of the Volte series look like? ;) Check out these reviews: Violet, Brown, Green.
Short summary:
Color: 7/10
A nice medium gray.
Design: 8/10
Cool swirl design!
Opacity: 4/10
The outer part of the lens has better color coverage than the inner part. Towards the pupil it blends into my eyes.
Enlargement: 4/10
Not really enlarging but there is still a small boost.
Comfort: 8/10
On the better end of average, definitely. I could wear them for at least 6 hours with little to no issues.
Naturalness: 6/10
Save for the black limbal ring these look okay-ingly natural.
Shiro Samurai is done for today! Bye!
Nerdcon 2015 cosplay plans – Bring out the oldie!
Whazzuuuup?
I haven't mentioned to many but yes, I am attending Nerdcon in Umeå, Sweden, this year too! And just like last year I will be a volunteer worker there as well! :D I won't be at the cafeteria though, even though that's what I applied for at first – you see, a week or so before the con Nerdcon informed me that they won't have their own cafeteria like last year (aka there will still be one but it's not driven by Nerdcon) so my working area got changed into the "activity helper/checker and assistant" one. I'm really looking forward to getting some new working experience and I'm hoping that it's gonna be just as fun as last year!
Oh, and in case you didn't know this year Nerdcon is a 2-day con. Last year it was only one day so yes, they're growing!! Nerdcon is held on 14-15th August, aka starting tomorrrow on Friday. I'M SO LATE WITH THIS POST OMG. As you can see Nerdcon is a bit different, since usually the con days are almost always put on Saturday and Sunday, but Nerdcon is Friday and Saturday instead.
But hey! The reason I'm writing my cosplay plans only one meager day away from the con is because I've seriously had the hardest time ever to come up with what to cosplay!! Pinky promise.
I figured quickly that I will want a cosplay that is easy to move around in, comfortable to wear and that preferably doesn't have big-ish props like swords and such that could get in the way. Thing is that a big chunk of all my cosplay do have swords..................
At one point I considered doing one of my Hakuouki SSL cosplays, then I considered Rurouni Kenshin's Okita but without the swords, then I considered throwing together a closet cosplay Pokémon gijinka or just doing an OC. But the more I thought the less I really felt like doing any of these; my ideas just kept changing and it was getting really frustrating because the con was already so close and I still had no idea whatsoever lol. But then on yesterday, while talking with Sacchan (former Sairu-chan, in case you had missed it) at Jäätynyt Enkeli's place, we first threw it as a joke  – "Hey, how about we do some good ol'Bleach cosplays? :D"
At first it was a joke but then we started seriously considering it, especially me and Sacchan. I mean, we hadn't cosplayed from Bleach in some time and, while neither of us has been active in the fandom for long, we still have some fond memories of the series haha. Today I then checked if I could even find all the pieces for the darn cosplay and yes, I did! I informed Sacchan that it's time to get things bleached and the reply was a glorious "5/5 tissimummu ilmoittautuu! XDDDD".
So yeah, I'll bring out an old cosplay of mine (one of my five first cosplays, zomg!) that hasn't seen the light of day since whoppin' 2011!! :O Yeah I even had to check that up.
Are you prepared for thiiiiiiiis??
Series: Bleach
Character: Jushiro Ukitake
Yep, it's good ol' captain Ukitake!
This is the sleepwear/casual wear/I'm-being-sick-in-bed/whatnot outfit that he's seen wearing in chapter 116, White Tower Rocks, in the manga. I don't know if it has an official name but oh well. xD
This is the cosplay I will wear on Saturday.
On Friday I won't be cosplaying – I'll just dress up a bit geekier and cooler than usual! I can't really be bothered to think out a second suitable cosplay (because it was so hard to even come up with the first one... OTL) that I could wear while working because yes, I will work on both days. Also, seeing how it might be stressful when we arrive to Nerdcon, it's just gonna be so much easier to not cosplay on the first day.
That's all for now and bye bye!
Hello all fellow nerds! :D
I'm back home from Nerdcon in Umeå and I must say that this was one of my funniest con experiences this year! I really had a blast!
Nerdcon may be small and rather new, but that doesn't mean that it can't be a great convention!
So, before I kick this summary up I'll just say some basic information about Nerdcon first – it's a convention in Umeå, Sweden, that was held on 14-15th August. Nerdcon is a mixed convention in the sense that it's not solely about anime and manga; Nerdcon puts focus on board games, video gamers and Western fandoms too. There is a little bit of everything!
I traveled to Nerdcon with my fellow company Sacchan, Jäätynyt Enkeli, Hasakitsuki and with our good friend Marcus! Marcus hadn't been to any conventions in, like, forever, but we managed to get him to tag along after some preparations and planning! :')
We left for Umeå super early on Friday morning, aka the same day Nerdcon would start. I think we woke up around 4 in the morning and everyone were in Sacchan's white Renault before the clock had struck five. Yes, Sacchan was a sweetheart and decided to drive us all to Nerdcon (she fairly recently got her driving license) instead of everyone taking the bus together, which would have been more expensive for everyone and, especially, to Marcus who is short on moolah.
The drive to Nerdcon went fine; I slept, we talked a lot of shit and pulled silly jokes and such, it was fun lol.
We got to Umeå a little bit before eleven I think, which was a good time because the con would open its doors at twelve, but those who were volunteers could get in one hour earlier. Everyone of us except Sacchan were volunteers and two of us had their shifts starting at twelve, so it was a good thing that we didn't get lost along the way we actually had calculated the time for driving right and arrived in good time.
The entrance to Nerdcon!
Note: the black sign reads "Umeå's music school".
Last year Nerdcon was held in a small school building in the middle of centrum that was quite narrow to move in, while also retaining a weirdly comfy feeling (despite the lack of windows xD) – but this year they expanded and moved to Midgårdsskolan a bit outside centrum, in Regementsområdet. I would say that it was a great change as Midgårdsskolan is absolutely awesome for a growing convention! Midgårdsskolan is an art & music school so it kinda is like, well, that kind of schools are, aka filled with creativity and a very pleasant free-spirited atmosphere.
We all went inside and, yes, did it look like a school building inside – a very fresh, lit up and inviting one!
Nerdcon entrance/information counter.
At the information counter they told us that there was some issues with the ticket system so only volunteers could get inside for now. We were a bit early anyway so at least I expected that everything wouldn't be up and running smoothly just yet, but it was no issue.
I had printed out my volunteer paper proof thingy and showed it. I then got a pastel pink & blue fabric con ticket on my wrist and a volunteer badge to hang from my neck, woop!
Nerdcon con ticket. It's cute!
The volunteer badge. Inside the plastic holder were also 4 food tickets,
to the cafeteria, with a worth of 50 SEK each.
Our group were some of the first to enter the building and it looked all clean and... empty, haha. It felt weird to be so early at a con!
My first impression of the con building was really positive and I instantly found myself hoping that Nerdcon would stay here the coming years!
The view you were met with right after you had passed the entrance/info
desk. The stairs led to the second floor, aka where the merchandise room,
video game rooms and board game rooms were.
I found a few guys (security guys if I recall right) standing in a corridor and asked where the bathrooms were. They told me to go past the cafeteria and turn to the left. The corridor these guys were standing in had toilets too, but these had a sign on them reading "personal toalett", aka normally reserved for those working in the building, like teachers etc. I didn't want to risk it so I just followed the directions I was given instead. xD The toilets were easy to find but oh boy did they feel narrow when I entered with all my bags! lol
The cafeteria area.
The Ginga corner (for fans of the Ginga Nagareboshi Gin series) was present,
just next to the cafeteria.
I changed from my traveling wear to some more fancy alternative outfit instead – I wore a black & white fabulous dress shirt, a dark blue vest, a multi-colored fluffy wig, circle lenses and white hakama. Oh, and I had a face mask!
The cafeteria.
It was run by the usual school cafeteria workers (I assume)
and not Nerdcon itself. That's the reason I couldn't work in the
cafeteria this year, because Nerdcon informed me late that they weren't
in charge of it, even though at first it was a possible
working area choice. Oh wells ~
Just the cafeteria's price list, in case anyone wonders what
food options there were. x)
RAMUNE!
Nerdcon had made sure that the cafeteria would sell Ramune, which
was awesome. Sure that it cost 35 SEK per bottle (compared to 20 SEK when
Nerdcon sold it themselves last year) but it was still appreciated.
I noticed quite early that Nerdcon seemed to have quite many volunteers (I kept seeing people with the badges!), which I think is a good thing because then at least things should run smoothly more easily. :') Compared to the super big and popular Närcon who has way too few volunteers and it fucks up so many things...
Oh and yeah! The Friday was really warm, especially outside. I was sweating like a sinner in church... or something.
I hadn't quite expected it to be this steaming hot in mid-August. OTL
Nerdcon outside area. Such a comfy school surrounding!
There were benches just outside so you could go out at any time
to enjoy the nice weather. There was a door leading outside from
the cafeteria which was always open (during con time) and a nice
shortcut to get to the main outside area.
Nerdcon offered sumo wrestling fun for everyone! :'D
And this was were I later ended up spending most of my time working...
My working shift was to start at 16:00 and I would work for 4 hours each day, which meant that on Friday my shift ended 20:00. Jäätynyt Enkeli and Hasakitsuki had the shift just before me and Marcus worked at the same time as me. I worked with "Aktivitetskontrollant och medhjälpare", which translates to something like "activity controller and assistant". My working duties were to do stuff like helping people who were lost and didn't find their way to whatever place, to check that everything was working in the anime and gaming rooms, help with competitions and other activities etc.
Schedule of everything that happened during the con.
Open in full-size to read!
While my shift hadn't started I just walked around and checked everything that there was to offer; I found the merchandise room, which had at least one seller that I recognized from Skecon. I didn't buy anything because I didn't really find anything that interested me.. but I did spend a while looking through the stuff.
One of the sellers in the merchandise rooms also carried Ramune (cheaper
than the cafeteria had but not cold) along with Pocky and some other sweets.
Most sellers sold the usual con stuff that I've seen so many times before and lost interest in. There was a book shelf with manga (second-hand I assume), older video games and such that was actually cool – there was even the Japanese Gamecube version of Tales of Symphonia!
Random con merchandise.
All along I wondered what that Monster Hunter thingy was.. I couldn't figure it out.
This seller had some stuff I hadn't seen before, including a shitlot of wigs.
There were these "books" with all the wigs that she was selling being
documented with pics, price and description. It was really nice!
I didn't buy anything though because I figured I could get the same kind
of wigs cheaper, just buying them myself straight from eBay...
T-shirts and figurines.
The "sword guy". He was at Skecon and I'm pretty sure he was at
Närcon too...
When my working shift was about to start I headed for the information desk at the entrance, 15 min before 16:00. One of the organizer/arranger guys showed up and asked me and Marcus which one of us felt like sumo wrestling; I eagerly waved my hand and got to follow him outside. There he just told me what to do, went through the sumo rules and most of the remainder of Friday I spent helping him run the sumo wrestling. xD I don't complain, it was super fun!
At one point the arranger guy had to go somewhere and so I was left alone in charge of the sumo. I rolled it like a boss until he came back. It was very entertaining to watch people's reactions and comments when they put on the sumo outfits; some of them said some outright hilarious things. xD
I found that the Nerdcon arrangers were really cool in the sense that even during my shift they told me it was okay to go fetch food from centrum, if I was hungry and wanted something that they didn't offer at the con. So yeah, my company went a quickie run we got lost to Umeå to go eat some sushi at Shogun, the sushi bar just next to the bus station. It's cheap and good!
My sushi plate! Om nom nom nom ~
After the sushi me and Sacchan were screaming for some energy drinks because yeah, I had slept less than 3 hours the night before and then kinda slept poorly in the car. Needless to say that before we went for the food break I had been, at one point, super tired and yes, it was during my working shift. I tried to just push the tiredness aside as much as possible but I couldn't help the constant yawning. ._. So when we were in centrum and actually found a store that carried Esa-Petteri Euroshopper's energy drinks we were overjoyed! XD Yes, it's the cheapo one but it has won a best taste test in Finland lol.
When we got back to the con I went to watch over the sumo wrestling again. I think about one hour or so before my shift was to end the arranger who was responsible for me just came up to me, while I was sitting and fanning myself on the bench, looked into my eyes all serious and started doing the religious bless-you-draw-a-cross-over-his-chest moves and said "I free you from your duties, you are a free man now", in a serious and borderline epic voice. I hadn't seen it coming at all and it was just awesome! XD I went all "Woohoo! o/" and then he continued by saying stuff in a dreamy, wise man way. "Go and live life now, go do all the things you always wanted to do... GO BUY A CAR ~"
"FUCK YEAH, GONNA BUY A MERCEDES!" was said by me and then I derped my way back inside.
The video game room.
I was disappointed that there were no old-school consoles
like last year. Gamecube was the oldest they had. :'( One of my
main draws to go to a video game room is to play really old consoles because
I don't currently have access to those at home. *coughsupernintendocough*
OMG Mario Kart: Double Dash!! in LAN mode. ♡
I kept wanting to play the LAN mode Double Dash but every time I went to check it there was either no one playing it or a full party, so I couldn't jump in. :'(
The second video game room. Yes, there were two. The smaller one
(the one on this pic) was driven by Nerdcon itself, the bigger room
by some other groups.
If you walked past the bigger gaming room and continued walking in the corridor you would find the board game room and the Fantasia room. I didn't spend any time in either; I just checked them out. It's cool that there's stuff for everyone but personally I haven't indulged myself into this part of the nerd culture so I don't really know anything about it... xD Should maybe try one day.
Just an example of what most of the corridors looked like.
The board game room.
There was a lot to choose from!
Some board game put on the table for play.
The Fantasia room. They sold some merchandise and also seemed to
act like some kind of gathering point for Western fandom fans? I don't know.
Friday was slowly drawing to a close... and I had gotten hungry again. I don't remember exactly when but at one point I passed by the cafeteria and noticed that the blueberry Ramune –which I had been eyeing all day– only had one bottle left so I decided to buy it. I've never seen it before!
Oh and guess what? Of course when I opened the Ramune it had to go fountain mode on me and spill all over my clothes! Grrrrrrrrreat...
This was like... my night meal??
The cupcake was awesome, by the way.
We left on Friday maybe one or two hours before Nerdcon closed for the day. I had contacted my friend Hitsuyū earlier and she had said that we could sleep over at her place this year as well. Everyone jumped into Sacchan's car and we started the drive.. and we got lost.
And Hitsuyū didn't answer the cellphone.
And the cellphone(s) died.
But somehow, through a miracle, we found our way to her. It felt so nice to be able to lie down after all those hours of sitting in a car and being sleep deprived. It was also very nice to see her again! ^_^
We ended up talking a lot of shit and then eventually falling asleep.
When Saturday morning dawned we all (except Marcus, who was sleeping somewhere in the con's sleeping hall dormitories) dragged our asses up from the beds the worst thing ever and started to prepare for the con. I was extremely sleepy so I ended up not getting up from bed early enough to put on my cosplay at Hitsuyū's so I just put on my everyday shit instead. Hitsuyū said that she'd maybe come later to the con but in the end she didn't show up at all. Oh well, she had recently been sick and all so it's understandable ~
Nerdcon had a "pysselhörna" upstairs, aka crafts corner.
You could draw, do origami and "pärlplattor", whatever the latter is
called in English. I honestly have no idea.
When we got to the con I instantly wanted breakfast. I hadn't eaten anything at Hitsuyū's and so a trip to the cafeteria was the first stop.
I didn't want any pies and none of the warm foods were tempting so I ended up just buying a bakery, a banana and a bottle of pineapple flavored Ramune.
Oh and guess what?
The Ramune exploded on me.
Again.
I'm not even kidding!
Niillä on joku salaliitto mua vastaan...
Nutritious breakfast. 10/10
After getting some breakfast into my stomach I felt like I could maaaaaybe be bothered to put on my cosplay; I honestly didn't really feel like cosplaying (haven't been in the mood lately and something's wrong, I know) but I told myself that it would be a waste if I wouldn't at least cosplay for a couple hours now that the costume had been taking space in my bag during the whole journey and I had bothered to even pack it with. So yeah, on with the cosplay. And I totally lazied out on all the make-up –save for darkening my eyebrows– and thus looked like shit.. or well, as I did when I first started out cosplaying lol.
I just felt a lot of discomfort being in costume (and the wig was being a bitch) so I didn't stay in cosplay for more than a couple hours at most. I just basically went outside with Sacchan as tissimummu Matsumoto, did some photoshooting outside and went to change into my alternative fashion outfit instead, which I felt a lot more comfortable in. *shrugs*
For some weird reason *surprise surprise* we still managed to get a couple shots I appeared decent in, so here you go. :S
Cosplayer:Shiro Samurai (Jushiro Ukitake)
Photographer:Sacchan
Photo editor:Shiro Samurai
It was actually super hard to stay serious during the photoshoot because me and Sacchan ended up pulling so many shitty jokes and references from the Finnish Donald Duck animations by SilliS. :'DD "Hyi vittu paskea!"
In the end I suddenly learned how to talk like Goofy... and all hell was loose. XD Oh my gosh, the laughs we had!
Bonus pic!
This sums up so well how I felt about cosplaying lol. xD
Another reason for why I changed out of cosplay early was because my shift would start already at 14:00 on Saturday. The wig was just way too annoying (and tangled) so I just wanted to get it off as soon as possible lol...
I borrowed a shorter silvery wig from Jäätynyt Enkeli and omg, it was so smooth and tangle-free. It was short enough to not get stuck in my bags' shoulder straps and so I could work without being annoyed out of my mind.
When my working shift started I went to the entrance again and suggested that I could go and be in charge of the sumo wrestling again, as I had noticed earlier that there was no one watching over it and it worried me. I got the thumbs up from the arrangers and off I went to act as a judge and watch over the thing!
Photo by Jäätynyt Enkeli.
Photo by Jäätynyt Enkeli.
Once again I had so much fun being the judge! Would do it again if the opportunity ever rises. x)
It was funny though because while I was in charge of the sumo a person came up to me and told me that "if only your wig was a bit longer you could cosplay Ukitake". I just straight-faced it but in my mind I was all "if you only knew that I cosplayed Ukitake a few hours ago..." XD
We went to fetch take-away sushi from Shogun for lunch/dinner again! o/
When my working shift had ended I spent the last hours of the con in the video game room. I ended up playing some old-school Kirby samurai style sword drawing game. By that I mean a game that was all about who was the quickest to react and press the button when the sign appeared. It was fun!
Marcus (with the long hair), two other guys and Hasakitsuki
playing the samurai Kirby mini-game. I joined in afterwards!
It was so glorious when I played the Kirby game and we all four pressed at the exact same time and so yeah, we got a tie/draw with all four of us! XD It looked like Kirby colorful ice cream in the center because everyone was just standing there and every player had a different color (I was red) ...
In the bigger gaming room's white board someone had drawn a beautiful
cup and there were also the names of all the Mario Kart tournament teams.
I think we left Nerdcon one or two hours before it officially closed its doors because we just didn't have anything else to do and most activities were over. All of us, Marcus included this time, went to Hitsuyū's place to calm down and leave homewards later on.
Buuuuuuut.
We didn't, because it got too late and we were tired.
We left for home on Sunday morning instead, now that everyone had gotten to rest properly. On the early afternoon we spent our last hours with Hitsuyū listening to music and watching hilarious shit from Youtube.. on her television.
"AKUN KAKKA ONKLEMA" :'D
Tyhäm! ♡
Gotta go fast!
If you don't know what this is then shame on you, you're missing
out on one of the best misheard lyrics videos. XD
Before we left we went to fetch some sushi for the trip. Yes, again. From the Shogun sushi bar of course. Deal with it! ~
I just don't get tired of it and hey, there is no sushi place remotely near my home town so it's a luxury for me to even get sushi in the first place!
~~~~~

I think that's all. I'm probably forgetting to mention a craplot of stuff (like how many times we got lost in Umeå centrum and all the rage that followed) but oh well, can't remember everything. xD And can't be bothered to write every little detail either because lazyyyyyy.
But all in all Nerdcon was a great experience and I'm definitely coming back next year too! I had more fun than I thought I would and the con building exceeded my expectations as well. :) The only thing I was missing was the lack of the old gaming consoles in the video game rooms but oh well, I managed without so it's not the end of the world.
Thanks to all the people who came and talked to me and to all the people who make Nerdcon happen! You deserve medals!

Shiro Samurai waves bye!

Lens review: Dueba Volte Violet

Hello guys!

I have another lens review to share today! ^_^ It's the Dueba Volte Violet lenses which, sadly enough, might be impossible (or close to impossible) to find anymore. It saddens me that the Volte series is seemingly discontinued, but no can do – all good things do come to an end. :( They were one of my early favorite circle lens series, nuuuh...
These are seemingly also known under the name Dueba Twinkle Violet...?

Base curve: 8.6 mm
Diameter: 14.5 mm
Water content: 38%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)

As you can see my vials are of the G&G brand and not Dueba. But this is nothing to worry about since G&G, Barbie and Dueba are all the same brand!

One lens in. Notice enlargement effect.
The first time I wore these lenses I was really sleep deprived (had slept less than 3 hours on the previous night) and I wore them at an anime convention. I could only stand the lenses for 2 hours and then I really really wanted to take them off. This surprised me greatly since all the other Volte lenses (Green, Gray and Brown) that I've worn have been of utmost comfort. Sure that my sleep deprivation and thus tired eyes might have contributed to the lenses feeling bad in my eyes, but I don't know to what extent. I remember them feeling dry and a bit itchy and I kept feeling them in my eyes at pretty much all times.
I wore the lenses again for a second time today and I instantly noticed that I still felt them in my eyes from the moment I put them in. This time I couldn't blame a lack of sleep since I had slept until 11:00, aka more than enough. I started taking the photos and after I was done I went back to chill and check internet. I noticed that out of nowhere my eyes got really watery and maybe 15 minutes after that I started feeling the whole "my eyes are drying and getting irritated" feeling. I kept the lenses on for 1,5 hours and then I went "fuck it!" and took 'em off. The horrible wig headache might have been a contributor.
I don't know if I've been having extra sensitive eyes lately or if I just got an unlucky pair this time around, but whatever the case these sure aren't as comfortable as the other Volte lenses I've had. *shrugs*
Oh, and even after taking the lenses off I kept feeling the whole "phantom lens" sensation, as if the lenses were still in my eyes. x) It took a while (30+ minutes) before my eyes got back to their normal comfy selves...

Photo batch of the lenses ahead!

All photos taken by me during a late August afternoon with a clear sky!
There's no color filters or such and that's so that the colors would be as true to real life as possible.

Indoors facing the window in my apartment.
Flash photo indoors.
White corridor light.
Crappy yellow staircase light.
(notice how my wig turned Miku Hatsune lol)
Outdoors facing the sun directly.
Outdoors sitting under the roof, facing the direction of the sun.
Outdoors, back against sun.
Outdoors, facing a corner of the building. Back against sun.
It's such a shame that the comfort is not very good because I really like the color of these; the design is also to my liking. I think that the purple color is surprisingly opaque – it doesn't disappear into my real eye color when I'm in a place with insufficient light, like the Volte Green tended to do easily. :/
I like that the Volte series have a medium-small enlargement effect so it doesn't look too dolly and will fit people who have smaller/narrower eyes naturally.They also look surprisingly okay in terms of naturalness, even with that noticeable black limbal ring haha.

Distance photos!

Psst, interested in seeing what the other colors of the Volte series look like? ^o^
Check out these reviews: Gray, Brown, Green.

Short summary:

Color: 8/10
It's a super lovely light violet shade!
Design: 8/10
I really do like the swirly design!
Opacity: 7/10
These have rather nice opacity. The violet shows up even in crappier lights without ending up "disappearing" into my real eye color. It also blends a bit towards the pupil.

Enlargement: 4/10
Enlargement effect is average, a bit on the small side maybe.
Comfort: 4/10
Comfort is the worst of all Volte lenses I've tried; for some reason I can't stand wearing these for more than 1-2 hours. :( My eyes feel them and can start watering for no reason or get moments early on when the lenses suddenly feel dry/irritating in my eyes etc. Maybe it's just an unlucky pair? It's quite the bummer nonetheless, as the other Volte lenses have been super comfy to me...
Naturalness: 6/10
If you don't count the black limbal ring and that violet is an unnatural color then these do, somehow, still look surprisingly natural.

Shiro Samuraiout! Bye bye!

[Sponsored] Lens review: GEO Princess Mimi Apple Green

Chuu chuu ~

I hope everyone has had a wonderful summer! ^_^ I've been quite stressed but I've also had a lot of time to relax and do things that I love during this long summer break: play video games, spend time with friends, go on a music concert, attend anime conventions etc. It's been quite the blast!

But hey, guess what? :D
I have a new circle lens review to share with you all wonderful peeps today! You see, I've gotten a new sponsor, woop! ♡ The lovely Eyedodo contacted me a while ago and asked if I was interested in reviewing a pair of lenses for them – my answer was of course a big yes!
I got to choose freely what lenses I wanted to try and for me the decision was made very fast; for long now I've wanted to try the wildly popular Princess Mimi (aka Bambi series) line by GEO and, as soon as I saw that Eyedodo carried them, I was set! I decided to shoot for the Apple Green since I have a huge preference bias towards green lenses, haha. ;v;
Get ready for a review of the GEO Princess Mimi Apple Green lenses!! ~

The lenses I'm reviewing in this post were kindly sponsored by Eyedodo.
All my reviews are always 100% my honest opinion!

Base curve: 8.8 mm
Diameter: 14.8 mm
Water content: 42%
Life span: 1 year (I recommend 6 months)

Before I start with the actual review I want to tell a few words about my experiences and thoughts about Eyedodo's store and customer service!
Before they took contact with me I had never heard of their store. I instantly checked it up online and my first impression was that the store looked really fresh, cute and inviting! They use a pink and blue color scheme and it's all just very nice to look at. :3 The site is also easy to navigate in; you can browse lenses by color, type, diameter, prescription and brand – it's really handy, pleasant to use and convenient. Me likey!
It seems like Eyedodo has been around for several years, although I'm getting the impression that most people don't know about them – heck, even I didn't know before and I'm starting to become quite the circle lens guru lol.
I'm actually really happy that they contacted me; I would have missed out on their wonderful store and service otherwise! Yep, I'm praising their customer service. You see, all through our email contact they were always super polite and friendly and the English was rather good to boot – better than what I've had from several other Asian-based sites, that is. Their responses were sometimes slow or delayed, for some reason or another, but every time they promptly and properly apologized so it's fine. All their emails were always kind in tone and were properly written in the sense of having a greeting and some sort of "have a nice day" type of well-wish in the end – never did their emails feel sloppy, uncaring or hastily written. I was really pleased with their contact and customer service; their kindness and professionality exceeded my expectations.
Also, their GEO lenses are authentic (check below!) and this leads me to believe that so would the rest of their sortiment be. You should be able to feel safe ordering from them! ^_^
I also want to mention that they shipped from Malaysia, just like many other big-name circle lens stores do. Shipping time was around the ordinary two weeks and I got no customs nor delays.

Based on my experiences with Eyedodo I would warmly recommend them to anyone! They were always helpful and a pleasure to deal with. I'm sure that if I would have had any issues they would have solved it in no time. I'm really happy that I got this opportunity to deal with such a lovely store!

Okay so, I mentioned in the store review part that I got sent authentic GEO lenses, which I got. :) I am very careful when it comes to circle lenses and where to purchase them from – there are stores out there that sell fakes so never, ever, assume that just because a store sells circle lenses they will be authentic and safe to wear. Fake lenses could damage your eyes and that's a thing you surely don't want to happen because hey, you only have one pair of eyes and they are irreplaceably precious!
So yeah, my GEO Princess Mimi lenses arrived and the vials looked just like they should – and so did the anti-fake stickers that were on each vial bottle. I can tell the real anti-fake stickers apart from possible fakes (look at the websites!) and these were surely the real deal.
Oh, and they also have the proper identification number code thingy on the lids, which is WMM-303.

GEO anti-fake stickers!
I even went to check up the lenses on GEO's anti-fake system, just because I wanted to be 110% sure, hahah! I just typed in the number code that was on the lower scrape-me-off gray part of the sticker and –boom!– the site told me that my lenses were genuine and safe to wear! Yes! o/
Note: Fake GEO lenses have their own "anti-fake" site that will tell you that your fake lenses are real. The real GEO's site is here. Fake sites and fake stickers will link to a different site so beware!

Screenshot proof of the authenticity of my lenses.
With the lens authenticity episode cleared let's move on to the "so, what came in the package?" part. Seeing how I had never ordered from Eyedodo before I had no idea of how they packed their items and so, of course, I wanted to review that too. C:
As I previously mentioned they send from Malaysia, although my package had gone through Singapore and had SG initials at the end of the tracking number code. This doesn't really mean anything though since I've had orders from other well-known circle lens online stores that went through Germany, haha. Yes, so when I got the shipment arrival notification I was quite confused "heeey I've not ordered anything from Germany, have I?".
Err, back on track! So yeah, when my shipment arrived after about 2 weeks I went to pick it up. It was this kind of yellow bubble wrap envelope, nothing special. I found it funny though that for some reason the item info description box said "false eyelash"... xD I guess that's why it felt like the guy who served me gave me a slightly weird look lol.
As soon as I got home I opened the package instantly – I was so excited! >u<
I pulled out this super cute plastic bag that had all the items inside it!

This was what was inside the bubble wrap envelope. So cute!
I opened the plastic bag and took out the contents – it only got cuter! >w<
There was an animal lens case (blue fishes, aka my favorite color and my Zodiac sign!), a very nice thank-you card with a personal handwritten appreciation message inside (yay) and so the lenses, wrapped safely in foam.
It all felt very thoughtful, personal and warm; it made me feel like a very appreciated and valued customer. ♡

This was what was inside the plastic bag!
I opened up the foam, expecting to be met by a pair of vials – wrong!
I was met by even more personal cutesy! x) It felt like the nice individual packing surprises just kept coming! It was awesome; seriously made me feel all warm and fluffy inside hahaah ~

Adorable tiny present box that the lenses were in!
There they are, neatly stored inside. :D
The packaging was top-notch, super cute and personal – it couldn't have been much better! It all felt like Eyedodo valued every single one of their customers and wanted them to feel appreciated. Having a store care for their customers this much is rare. I was taken by surprise how heartfelt it all was. *_*

Now that I've talked about the shipping (and how awesome it was) I can move on to the actual wearing of the lenses, aka get to the main part of the lens review. ;)

~ Lens review ahead! ~

Okay so, the first time I wore these lenses I instantly noticed how thin they were! Thin lenses tend to be more comfortable to wear because you feel them less and they let in more oxygen... or that's what I would assume at least. These lenses are so thin that they like to fold themselves in half while I'm trying to cleanse/rub them; I also had some problems actually getting the lenses into my eyes because they were so thin that they would flop over on my finger as soon as the lens touched my eye.
So yeah, these lenses are thinner than average but they aren't as frustratingly thin as the SeeShell Dizoneye Greens that I had before, so it's not a problem at all. :)

One lens in. This is to show the enlargement effect!
As soon as I had gotten both lenses in I was amazed by how pretty they were! ;o; I love green lenses to begin with but now that I had the Princess Mimi lenses in I understood why this series is so popular!
The design of the lenses is really eye-catching and it looks amazing, almost a bit mesmerizing with its lovely green shade! It makes me feel like some forest elf boy or something, hahah.
I think that this kind of lens design is great for cosplayers as well as J-fashion fans! It's a lens that will work for a lot of different looks and I'm sure that it's a favorite for many circle lens enthusiasts!

Photo batches of the lenses ahead!
First batch is indoor photos, second batch is outdoors.

All photos taken by me during a late August evening with a clear sky!
There's no color filters or such and that's so that the colors would be as close to real life as possible.

Crappy yellow staircase light.

Facing staircase's window. Sunset.
The enlargement effect is rather big but it's not big enough to swallow my eyes, at least. I think that the enlargement is perfect if you're looking for big eyes but don't want to overdo it. ^_^ It's big enough to be noticeable from afar and make your eyes stand out but not to the point of looking downright freaky. It's a really flattering size and yes, it does give you the anime look!

The first time I wore the Apple Green's I had them on for almost 4 hours before I started feeling like I wanted to take them off. I was in my apartment where I had the air conditioner (it's a big fan) running so the fact that I managed to wear the lenses for that long is already a good thing!
I did notice that my vision blurred towards the 4-hour mark and I did also always have this slight feeling that I was wearing lenses – especially when I blinked. Also, the first time I put the lenses into my eyes they watered a bit but it didn't hurt; it took around 10 minutes before my eyes got used to the feeling of having the lenses in.
The second time I wore the lenses I felt like they were slightly uncomfortable at first (it didn't hurt or anything, just the very noticeable "lens in the eye" feeling that is unpleasant) but that went away rather quickly. I managed to wear them slightly below 4 hours this time (I could still have worn them maybe 2 hours more at maximum, but that would have needed some determination) but all along I could feel that I had lenses on; that feeling never disappeared.
They're not the best in terms of comfort but still above average, especially when considering that the second time I wore these lenses I was playing video games and thus staring at a television screen those full 4 hours, which, normally, would dry out my eyes even faster than usual.
I think that at most I could stand wearing these for about 5-6 before really wanting to take them off, but that would be pushing it a bit and probably wouldn't be the most comfortable. The first feelings of slight discomfort tend to come around the 1 or 2-hour mark for me and my vision can get occasionally blurred – or there's a temporary feeling of dryness.

Outdoors, back against the sun. (aka facing the wall)
Sitting under the building's roof (in the shadow) outdoors, turned towards the sun.
Facing the evening sun directly.
Facing a corner of the building, back against sun.
Facing a wall/door of the building, back against sun.
I am loving the Princess Mimi Apple Green circle lenses and I would recommend them for any cosplayers, J-fashion fans, lolitas or just basically anyone who wants to try some really nice green colored contact lenses! ^u^
The only thing they lack in is comfort, at least on my eyes, but they're still comfortable enough to be wearable – and the sheer beauty of these lenses is nice enough to make me want to wear them anyway, haha. I am suspecting though that one of the reasons why these lenses aren't super ultra comfortable for me might have something to do with the fact that the base curve of my eyes and the base curve of the lenses doesn't match; my eyes have a base curve of 8.6 mm something and the lenses have a curve of 8.8 mm.

Lastly I have the photos that show what the lenses look like from a distance!

Short summary:

Color: 9/10
I need to say that thegreen shade is lovely
I love green lenses to begin with and these remind me exactly why!
Design: 8/10
The design is really nice and eye-catching. It makes your eyes look lively and amazing and the black limbal ring just adds to it!
Opacity: 7/10

Opacity is definitely good. The green shows up well but it mixes in with my eyes towards the pupil.
Enlargement: 8/10

These lenses sure are big but it's not to the point of being overwhelming. I still feel like I could wear them to school... x)

Comfort: 6/10
Not the best but not bad either. I can wear them for around 4 hours before the need to remove the lenses gets really big. When I wear the Apple Green's I always feel that I have contacts on.
Naturalness: 5/10

Mjeh, they don't look crazy or anything but they are a bit too fancy to pass for your real eyes, haha.

All in all, I am seriously pleased to the utmost with Eyedodo's service and I would really recommend everyone to give their store a look and buy from them if you find anything that interests you! ^o^
Their service is excellent and I really don't have a single complaint, even if I would try to look for one. They're a pleasure to deal with, based on my experiences. :)

Thank you for reading and I hope that this was helpful! (。◕‿◕。)/
Thank you so much, Eyedodo! ♡
